Refuting Awake: Suitcase Bombs
by metatron inrecently, the awake magazine raised the issue of old soviet briefcase bombs in terrorist hands.. the san francisco chronicle quoted russian and outside experts on why this is very unlikely:.
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/03/23/mng8d5pm7l1.dtl.
admittedly, they could still create a simple 'dirty' bomb but the russians say these small units have a limited shelf life.

The article also mentioned how much of the countries resources were diverted to support Saddam's military aspirations. That too is out of the way. Good for them.

Abbadon is correct. 'Fissile material' is needed to make both types of Bombs. U-235 or Pu239 are both fissile.
My guess is that the Backpack nukes are the gun-barrel variation. The yeild is small, but when the capabilities of these suitcase bombs are discussed they seem to indicate a low yeild device - (destruction of city blocks vs entire "cities")
Besides, these are relatively simple devices. My only question was on the deterioration of them. Batteries and conventional explosives are not hard to reaquire. If these went bad what would stop a terrorist from replacing them? A gun barrel device doesn't need fancy timed/shaped explosives like the Tellar-Ulam device. Decay of the fissile material may come into play, but 40 years will not decay U-235 or Pu-239 that much so as to significantly disrupt the Fissile ratio. If these things are gun barrel devices I can't see what they are NOT just as deadly as they were a few decades ago.
PS even though Plutonium is generated in Nuclear power fuel, it is very difficult technologically to extract. It requires an enourmous infastructure. I believe gaseous diffusion is only practical way to separate the scant plutonium from the rest of the nuclear fuel.

Ok, Question: Was there a comment made at a meeting that finally convinced.
by New Castles inwas there a comment made at a meeting that finally convinced you, this is not right?
for me a couple of weeks ago was in the service meeting, they stated that if the children didnt finish their homework because they were studying the bible or at a meeting that teachers should understand that their meetings and study are more important.
i looked at my wife and went "what"??

Nos and others are right on the money.
I have seen many women behave as Decender's does. I personally refuse to treat her as a victim. Regradless of her gender she's treating him like crap. This behavior soooo prevelant. This is not some new unique behavior. If you let them walk all over you they will and dislike you for it. To me it's that simple.
As for calling her a B!$ch, I think the title is well deserved considering the described behavior. I can feel compassion for her, and no doubt their might be something that you could point to as a factor, but in my opinion their is no excuse for someone treating another person like a piece of garbage. I'm calling this one like I see it.
An alcoholic may have real good reasons for his/her addiction. Some really powerful things may have caused them to go over the edge. But that makes them no less an arrogant, abusive, ass, when they are drinking. I can equally feel compassionate for an alcholic, but I in no way will share my company with one who is determined to wallow in their problems with no concern for my well being.
If men buckle under the pressure of their woman, they deserve to be treated like a doormat. - well said, I might only add "if people buckle under.."
There seems to be a whole crop of "Nice Guys" these days who for some reason feel it's necessary to sell out their all of their dignity to win over a women. They are getting slaughtered because in reality women - people - do not respect someone who will cower and submit to their every whim. That's not what a relationship is about.

Congratulations, Spain - first government to fall because of Iraq, Bush!
by TheOldHippie in.
congratulations to the spanish people, who voted the socialists to power as a protest against the conservative government's supporting bush's war on iraq, and for claiming the madrid bombs were acts of the eta nationalists and not an al-qaida attack because of the war on iraq.. so one government has fallen, and there are many more to come, bush.. who says these days ain't fun?

I agree, we should show sympathy for the American people against whom their non democratically elected government has commited so many atrocities.
With all due respect Alan, you should study up on the meaning of a "Republic" and how the democratic process works within one. James Madison discusses it at length, particularly in The Federalist Papers # 14.
And as far as "Atrocities"..... Surely you are not going to list poor Saddam an his family among them are you? I know, every leader should have the right to dip their 'enemies' into acid and Gas wayward townships, but come on, look at all the oil for christs sake! Please list all the supposed atrocities of this "non democratically elected government". I would have chose an earlier administration, such as those during the Native American massacres, but you apparently see something I don't with this present one so enlighten me.

Into the Fray he goes....
I think its safe to say the regardless of how they got there, the Iraqi people are in a much better situation than they were with Saddam in Power, much to the dismay of terrorist organizations. A recent (Rueters) news article reported:
"Asked whether their lives were better now than in the spring of 2003, nearly six in ten Iraqis said the situation was somewhat better or much better than it was, according to the survey of 2,500 people conducted for a group of broadcasting organizations by Oxford Research International. "
I'm kinda surprised that the Anti-America/Bush folks here find themselves opposing Democracy, 'instant' or otherwise. A cursory look at world history reveals autrocity after autrocity have been committed against citizens by their own non-democratic governements. If we divide governements into these two classes I find it amazing that anyone would favor a non-democratic form of government. Democratic governemnts are by no means innocent either (as I'm sure will be pointed out) but by and large Democratic governments serve their citizens and the world well. Democracy in Iraq is a positive step.

Hi Decender,
My ex and I went through a similar period. She lavished the attention she got from other guys. She ended up sleeping with one of them. We are divorced. We are friendly when we talk, which is not that often. She really laments her life now, because we really did have a good thing going. She has called me crying at what her life is now compared to when we were together. I think she just needed to figure a few things out on her own. Unfortunately it cost us our relationship.
There was a 2 year period where we went through all sorts of scenario's in an attempt to work it out. We were together, seperated, and everything in between. The bottom line is that I could not live with that kind of betrayal. I tried and I hated myself and her for it. It take's a little while to get over things like this, but for me I came out of it great. I just wish it didn't take me 2 years to figure that out.
It sounds like your wife has some issues to work out. Being a former JW no doubt contributes to this. Unfortunately this probably results in putting you through the meat grinder in one way or another. If I were you, I would seriously consider starting the Divorce process. In the US this can take awhile (3-6 months). If things work out in the mean time great, but if it doesn't, you won't have to drag it on and on. Also, I wouldn't give yourself to her every whim. I think she is totally taking you for granted, She likely has no respect at all for you especially since you've thusfar shown yourself willing to be her doormat. She probably thinks she has you anytime she wants. I would tell her to "F#%* off, you B!#ch" (no offense to any ladies reading this, this is not a male thing, just a respect thing) then wait a few weeks to even speak to her. Don't answer phone calls, don't agree to anything. Don't tip toe around her feelings in an attempt not to make her mad, in fact I would go out of your way to piss her off. Afterall she does deserve it. If you cast yourself as the pansy ass who will jump at any shred of hope you're doomed. Would you want to be around someone so pitiful and desperate? You must respect yourself before anyone else will. After some time has gone by you may see what, if anything, is left. She will likely try to make up with you, fearing that she lost her Mr. Last Resort.
This is just my opinion. I followed that advice (after 2 yrs of trial and error) and realized that I didn't want the remnants of a broken down shell of a relationship. If I did want the relationship I could have had it back, but I didn't. My advice is to take back your self respect first before you make yourself vunerable again.
The flip side of the coin is that you make yourself availible to her no matter what. She knows you will always be there for her. When nothing 'better' is going on, you are her man (Mr last resort). However, when opportunity knocks, it's meat grinder time again for you. Only this time you two may have wasted 10 additional years together with kids, a house etc. If only you knew it would have turned out this way when you were younger......... Just my thoughts, take it or leave it.
I wish you the best.

i was due to have a visit from two elders and a lot of you gave me lots of help and encouragement.. well, the two elders visited and i have to admit that it was nothing like i expected.. they sat down, and told me straight away that there was nothing i could say or ask that would hurt me.

Laurelin,
I wanted to comment on this point.
THE PREACHING WORK
It is true that JW's are noted for their door-knocking work. Mormons are also visible in this type of preacing, and to a lesser extent, some protestant churches have done some canvassing too. However, it should be noted that the example in the Bible is different. Christians were dispatched to preach in town square and other public centers, and appeal to groups of people. The epistle are full of such examples. Individual homes were used as "house churches" where interested people gathered for further discussions. The house to house canvassing work was not used. This is most likely because it is so ineffective. There was not literature to give householders. Most Christians did not have a personal Bible (scrolls). Christians were also very small in numbers in the first century so the explosive growth that followed was a result of group teaching.
This pattern of teaching to crowds and meeting to teach multitudes is still practiced today by every? Christian religion. If you turn on the radio you hear preaching. The same goes for the TV. People at the beach hand out pamphlets. Revivals and 'crusades' are highly publicised. Churches erect sign enticing interested people to come listen.
In my opinion preaching is EVERYWHERE! JW's growth is stagnant - about equal to population growth in most places.
