1. has it occured to you that nowhere in the old testament is the holy spirit mentioned.
it did not exist.
do you not find it strange that when joseph was told it was the holy spirit that made mary pregnant, he did not ask "who the f--- is the holy spirit?
Thank you!

Leolaia,
please help me understand a few things here. I appreciate your research and posts, but sometimes I can't draw a conclusion from some posts.
For example, you said:
The author of Matthew was influenced by the story of Moses in Exodus and in haggadaic tradition and thus the story of Herod killing babies is based on the story of Pharaoh killing babies, and the story of the escape to Egypt to hide from Herod is based on...
So, in other words, are you saying that the aspects you mention in the report of Mathew simply did not happen; that he simply invented them? Or, are you saying that the events happened but in a small scale and he embelished them based on an old story/tradition?
Then you say this:
Luke, on the other hand, was not influenced by the Moses traditions, and thus has nothing of the divorce, the killing of babies, the flight to Egypt, etc.
Seems like Luke's report is more trustworthy... but then you say:
The author of Luke was instead influenced by the nativity traditions of the prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel 1-2, and thus has constructed quite a different story.
Again I ask basically the same questions: Did the events reported by the author of Luke happen? Not happened? or happened but not exactly the way he described them?
In a more personal note: how trustworthy, in YOUR opinion, are the accounts of the gospel in a 1-to-10 scale?
(I have myself pointed out some contradictions in the gospels but never thought that whole chunks of story could be mere invention of the author...)
Thanks a lot.

a week back, gary buss started a post on the gb's claim to assembly halls and kh's in the new org.
book.i find this interesting because the kh in the city i reside in has been up for sale for the past year.
morning glory,
hubert asked you this but you didn't respond: in your initial post, you were not talking about the Hall on northern Rhode Island, were you?

They sold 2 KH's here and the 2 congregations borrowed $ from the WTS and built a new one
See? That's what I'm talking about. Instead of selling one and building two, the're doing the opposite, which may be a sign of membership problem, at least in some areas.
It could also be an indication of the quality of "buying power" of those who stay in.

Hello "morning glory" and welcome to the board!
This thing of KHs for sale is fascinating to me. I think the reason is because I grew up, during my faithfull years, hearing all this talk about growth, growth, growth, increase, increase, increase... and now what we see is KHs being sold.
It doesn't make sense to me. If membership is increasing, you don't sell; you build. Unless, of course, you sell 1 to build 2 or something. But even so, selling a hall wouldn't sound good to me; I always thought that a Hall is something that you get attached to it, especially if you were involded in its construction.
For those interested on this, here are two threads about this matter. The first one is a thread with pictures of a Hall with a "For Sale" sign; the other is a follow up about the removal of the sign, which I suspect is a consequence of the picture being shown in this board:

i asked a similar question a couple days ago and the thread went off course.
my question is does anyone know how the wts hold is kept over the people in the rapidly growing areas of the world?
i would imagine the hold they have over the people there is less.
I know Brazil very well and I would say that Brazil has an interesting situation in the sense that there are a lot of middle-class Internet connected people, but there are many more who are excluded from the free flow of information that the Net provides.
An interesting trend in Brazil right now is that QUITE A FEW young people and many people in their thirties and forties are going to college. The factors, in my view, that has contributed to this are:
a) realization that the end is not exactly near,
b) the Society has soften up a little on college education,
c) job market in Brazil is requiring more and more college education for positions that didn't use to require it.
So, the WT is having trouble to keep a hold on JWs especially the better to do ones, and the connected. Growth is still high for US standards (above 4% in publishers last year) but a lot lower that it used to be only about 2 decades ago, when it was routinely beyond the two digit figure.
Anoher interesting thing about Brazil: SENSUALITY IS EVERYWHERE. It's in the Billboards; it's in the magazines; it's in the newspaper; it's on the streets; and especially it is on TV programs and commercials. As a consequence, the turnover is very high; a lot of converts are made, but a lot of defellowshipping happens for "bad sexual conduct". As we say, it's a revolving door.
Only the future will tell how strong a hold WT will be able to keep over brazilians JW people.
