as a bit of a newbie , i'm interested as to the overall viewpoint of site users and spectrum of views.. using a crude gauge , where 1 = completely convinced "stepford"jw ("jhs organisation is wonderful etc") and 10 is a completely rabid "tear down the tower" apostate/ex-witness pathalogically hating the whole jw structure , where do you fit in?
(apolgies to both groups - no offense intended).. i'm about 2.5 - somewhat disillusioned , keen for reforms in certain areas but broadly accepts the teachings and loves the lifestyle.

Like other JW rites, they are an exercise in repression.
The talk is a real downer and loaded with warnings against unclean types of sex etc. They will mention the rings and that they are a symbol, though not required. It is quite sullen and has no sense of celebration.
When unbelievers are in attendance, someone will watch the getaway car to make sure that no one decorates the car with cans or any other such pagan-inspired decorations.

was there ever an issue as to whether you were / weren't allowed to wear shoes at a group book study in someones house , so everyone had to dump their shoes at the door?.
Removing one's shoes may be a custom in many locations. But we had one MS in our hall that should always keep his shoes on. My god, even if he had dog doo on his shoes, it was still better than taking them off.

recently, i saw a live forever book.
My wife and I were on a vacation at Depoe Bay in Oregon when we decided to nose around a used book store. I came across a 'Knowledge' book. I noticed that it looked like a replacement for the Truth book. I bought it, for an absurd $7, so I could see what the current looniness is.
- I noticed that the looniness had not so much changed as it had become watered down.
- A dubbie saw me reading it on the beach and approached our group to see what hall we were from.
That book sparked me to look online where I started finding out things that are still causing my jaw to drop to the desk.
a jw friend of mine said that durning the 1000 years of paradise earth, that animals will still die.
he said that they will die to be a reminder that any jw could die durning that time.
is this an official teaching?
And not only that, they will die from old age. No other anmimal will kill them for food. No animal will scavenge the carcass. All animals will have reverted back to their pure, vegetation-eating state. Yup leeches will learn to eat salad. Lions will learn to love squash and broccoli.
The dead animals will either rot on the ground or I guess the humans will have to bury them all.
(Sometimes I get a kick that I used to believe this crap.)

Read about forms of false logic; Items like, circular logic, strawman arguementation, ad hominum attacks, and the like. It doesn't require reading stacks of books and is readily available on the web.
Once a person can categorize such fallacies, they will see them by the droves in the society's literature.
i'm re-reading 1984 and the similarities between the wtbs and the "party" astound me, but anyway, it made me think of the time when i started to get doubts (thoughtcrime).. i remember once at this book study a sister commented about the 1914 and was reciting it's historical accuracy.
anyway, she went on to mention that the demons were probably learning everything about biblical prophecies from the wtbs.
i was 13 at the time but the comment made me cringe, i was thinking "why would superior beings need humans to interpret the bible for them?
I remember it well. It was in 1974, just befrore the great '75 debacle. I was 15.
A group of then-teenagers were talking about the impending big-A. I was explaining that in my opinion, the 'generation' might not have started until exactly 1914. I said that it seems like supposition that people had to be of 'reasoning age' to see events of 1914. Also, I suggested that this generation wasn't necessarily limited to 80 years; that it could last as long as there is one representative of a generation. Based on that, the Big-A could be as far out as 2014.
You should have seen the reaction. You'ld have thought I was espousing canibalism.
It was then that it was clear that we had to pretend to believe all the bullsh!t. My exit was still a few years out.
