  why do humans search and/or reach for god?.

  if they are honest with themselves it is because have a fear or death or of non-existence.

  or they draw "power" from god.

  Why do humans search and/or reach for God?

  If they are honest with themselves it is because have a fear or death or of non-existence. Or they draw "power" from God. A small few (when they are truly honest) admit that they search for a God to explain existence. Why do so many prisoners suddenly "find God"? Is it to gain control.

  In my opinion, the concept of God was needed to offer a way for people to organize things which they failed to understand. True we probably have new things today which we fail to understand, but we have precedent for organizing processes to explain and discover these things. Previously, discovery was discouraged by the churches and zealots who knew they would lose power if people surrendered their superstition.

  One person I wrote to explained their reasoning on this subject as follows:

  The attraction of theism, as opposed to naturalism, is the institute of petition; namely, that mankind can petition the gods to change fate, thereby having some control over fate, whereas under naturalism fate is blind and cannot be controlled. Sincere prayer, and belief in its effectiveness, is the clearest outward sign of theistic belief. The core of theism is a belief of external sovereignty over fate, whereas the core of naturalism is lack of belief in such.

  So what does God have to offer you?

  doing the "fade" thing is like a slow, painful torture to me.

  i have to do the fade because of my current circumstances (wife being a jw but starting to doubt/both our families very strong jw's).

  it makes me angry at having wasted so much time and energy (and money) being a jw.

  Wolfy,

  Thanks for sharing you feelings. Many of us here understand how you feel. The vulnerability and confusion can be rather overwhelming while you try to find direction in your life at the time of exiting. I can only offer one piece of advice that helped me to focus and see my way through the mine field you encounter after exiting: THINK and absolutely know that you have the right to believe anything you want to. I for my part refused to believe in smoke and mirrors again. I sought a path of truth as far as beliefs go - hence I demaned proof for my own satisfaction. But then everyone is different and while you might find others here who have ended differently to myself (an admitted atheist) when we debate or exchange ideas it is just like exercising to stay healthy.

  So do yourself a favor and use your freedom of thought, freedom to explore the REAL world and freedom to learn whatever you want to. There are many sites and people to stimulate your thinking - suprisingly most of mine were worldly folk but so many others here have been through the mill and they are here for you any time you need them - myself included.

  as you may know, there are ones at the top of the organization that stand accused of pedophilia, etc.

  as i remember, both greenlees and chitty have been exposed as such.. now there are accusations that ted jaracz is also.. ask yourself something: how did jaracz get to be at the top of a "christian" organization when almost nothing about his personality reflects anything that is christian?

  which of the fruitages of the spirit could you associate with his conduct?.

  i have taken a break from the baby wait to come to the board and see what is happening.

  recently i had a run in with some people from another board, that also attend this board.

  in a search of my name on this site, i see that people (two weeks later) are still mentioning this and me.

  Sorry the victim mentality won't work on me. Try to deal with fact rather than drivel please. I was the person who had nothing to do with this whole crock but was brought into it by the accusations against Kennopdragon - because some person decided we had similar posting styles.

  So let's see - how should I react when falsely accused?

  Did my accusers make asses of themselves by accusing me of being Kennop? IMHO - YES

  Was your logic lame? Why the logic was "Donkey has a similar posting style to Kennop, he must be Kennop, we don't like Kennop so let's smear the Donkey". Is that Lame? IMHO - YES

  Watchout for the Jawbone of the Ass? Again Yes - because I will call your bluff.

  Instead of an apology - which is what decent people would offer for wrongfully accsuing someone of something - now you try and attack the person for defending themself? You accuse Kennop of being a jerk etc - but then you treat others just as you claim he would?

  Thanks a lot for the decency you showed. Instead of trying to make ammends what do you do? You attack...well haven't you heard how stubborn mules can be? Why does a lowly donkey have to keep showing you up?

  In any event, if I have offended you I would like to be the first to apologize.

  Spirituality

  many xjws and others i have encountered in my journey express disdain for religion but they instead refer to having found a spirituality.

  do you mean that instead of seeking fulfillment from life that you have made an inward journey to self discovery?

  or do you mean that you have found god by journeying outward?.

  While I acknowledge no god I feel passion and freedom for living. Do I equate this zest with spirituality? Perhaps. In my mind I equate spirituality with freedom. Freedom is more important to me than anything. Freedom gives me the latitude to move. Movement gives me the space to feel and experience life.

  For me, an important principle of freedom is detachment. To equate that for Christians: One of the things Jesus supposedly taught was that to find him you had to go through a process of disowning possesions and family. My god is Freedom. To find it I have realized that I need to keep the principle of detachment clear. Detachment is mandatory for us to be free. For as long as we have an attachment to anything, be it a circumstance, our past, a person, an attachment to needs of any type, then we are therefore subservient to that attachment. Does this mean I do not share my love and my life with people who are special to me? No. Would I be saddended if I was to awaken one day and find they were no longer there? Of course. But I would get up. I only have one shot at life, finding happiness and making my own life fulfilled. Others may enrich my life but they do not fulfill it. Fulfillment depends on me, my goals, my effort, my celebration, my reaction, my state and my values.

  One can realize that you are attached to something or someone that one feel is in control of your life because one has a need for that. When I feel I need something or someone I have given my power away. Therefore, the only other thing one does know to do is to attempt to control or manipulate that situation or person to provide for one's safety. That requires a tremendous amount of energy. It robs me of the abundance of life because I am then so busy attempting to control the situation or person. It is for each of us to examine how we interact with situations and people.

  The only reason one has attachments is because we perceive them to be needs for our safety. Many of our great attachments can be to the past. Many of our great attachments are to past lives that we do not even consciously remember (if you remember the 60's then you weren't there!!). Many of our attachments are also to whatever particular situation seems to providing what we feel gives us a rich and abundant life. If that remains our choice, then we will always be imprisoned by our needs.

  Without the burden of attachment I am free to move. I am able to worship freedom!!

  this is about running the forum:.

  it's a balancing act.

  it is impossible to please everyone all the time and i don't go out of my way to try to please anyone ... i just do what i think is right.. some good examples are controversial topics: if i lock or delete something that is controversial then i am accused of "stiffling free speech".
