  This generation and a key weasel word

  in this past sunday's watchtower lesson, which has been discussed at length on this board, the gb/writing committee used a key weasal word that we will probably see again.

  the exact quote is: "we understand that in mentioning 'this generation,' jesus was referring to two groups of anointed christians.".

  this goofy teaching is merely a patch until they can devise something more plausible, or until some event occurs that they can latch onto that will make this teaching more acceptable to the r&f.

  "We UNDERSTAND..." is established "Watchtower speech," among "those mature," of course. If you speak to long-time elders, go the KMS, etc. you will reguarly hear about some earlier doctrine that was then later replaced/reinterpreted as "Well, the understanding in those days was..." or "that was the understanding back before blah, blah, blah."

  It's like the constant use of the passive voice in WTSpeech: "it has been decided that..."; "the decison was made to..."; or the corporate mentality: "the body of elders has seen fit to..."; "the Governing Body has decided..."

  It's all part of the entrenched procedure to abandon any personal responsibility by individuals. It's got a long history in the WTS. Nothing new here, really (and isn't that shocking?!).

  Now this "We LOVE this teaching" thing IS new. It shows how deeply averse they are to the idea of doing any kind of objective, empirical, educated research as a basis for doctrine. Not that they were ever really into that, except perhaps a little bit by Fred Franz, but with all his eccentricites constantly getting in the way. However, the current GB has latched onto the "we LOVE this doctrine" thing like GB I never had. In a certain sense, GB II is a bit more transparent, openly displaying their ignorance far more than GB I did. They seem proud of it, in fact.

  It sounds as if they're not sure why this location hasn't had the people register for it like other sites, and they're trying to cover all bases for why they figure people aren't signing up. Did it ever occur to them to ASK IN ADVANCE where people would like to go and not go?

  The parking sounds like it must be an issue, with busses for remote parking areas. Anyone know about this at Ford Field?

  There is a hard-nosed brother who keeps chiming in and saying "obey and be blessed." What a revelation! Never heard that line before...

  Question to the poster kneehighmiah: where is this from? Was it some meeting part, some CA or SAD? It sounds like it was put together to try an reach the unresponsive friends.

  my daughter told me that all her teenage friends used to smoke tobacco, pot, do drugs, get drunk and "misbehave" with other kids all the time..

  I read opposing literature, from the stuff mainstream evangelical churches put out (Walter Martin, Kingdom of the Cults, etc.) to "apostate" books that highlight truths the org wants kept secret (RF's COC, COJ). Isn't that supposed to be misbehaving??? I think so...

  nonjwspouse brings up an interesting point. What if future research brings out that the most common compound in antiperspirant deodorant, aluminum chlorohydrate, is linked to the rise in Alzheimer's disease???

  like is there something i can use to prevent this from happening to me if it does happen.. no jokes about me being a bad little boy.

  FL_P, please forgive my mocking comments to you on an earlier thread. I thought you were just another loyal Witness apologist who came to this site to badger the members and put in FS time. If I'd realized that you were going thru an internal crisis, I would not have made fun of you. I'm sorry!

  My two cents' worth: don't do anything rash. BE QUIET to family and Witness friends about your doubts. Put on a smile and be reserved. Listen to the elders when they speak with you individually, but know that if you really open up to them about your doubts, you are toast. Tell them thanks and that they've given you plenty to think about. All this will lessen the threat that they'll DF you. Meanwhile think about whether you really believe the WT scenario, in total or in parts. If you want to fade (quietly leave with some measure of respect and freedom from harassment) and are still single, the physical move of your person to where you are not known, suggested by others, is the simplest way to go. Whatever you do, think of Jesus's words about counting the cost. Right now YOU are largely in control of whether you get DFed or DAed by your own conduct, both in JW-land morality and by means of what you say to active JWs.

  I hope this helps. You have to make up your own mind.

  i see my wife being pulled into the org a little again, by some good people and kindness.

  she grew up a very happy jw, and to leave is very hard for her.

  but she has opened the pandoras box of her brain and can't shut it.. we were discussing blood a couple days ago.

  Not that I'm defending any of this, but I can picture some JW apologist coming up with these sorts of explanations:

  - Some animals go thru estrous real quickly, and the flood was long enough for some to already reproduce on the ark.

  - Others came on the ark pregnant and had large litters, so plenty of meat.

  - Noah and family could eat unclean meat since the forbidding of unclean meat to eat wasn't till Moses' day.

  Need I go on? You know that to the faithful Witness the thinking of God's modern-day prophets, the FDS, trumps any other kind of thinking, esp. logic. Just think of FL_Panthers' recent mantra, the meetings/publications are "so encouraging...so encouraging." That's all many can conceive. Logic isn't considered. It's viewed as a threat.

  This is a good thread. Thanks, minimus. I've seen and still see a real continuum. I think the joyful ones are still around (I know a number) but I cannot help but wonder what the real source of their joy is, whether it's real joy in Jehovah's service, self-delusion, being genuinely deluded by others, intentional faking, or some combination of these, or yet other factors I can't know. Once they lose someone's trust bc of waking up to TTATT, that person cannot help but be skeptical toward them, distrust them.

  Splash's comment sure fits plenty I know or have known. I'm not active like in the past so it's hard to know how much things have changed but one thing stands out from the turthfulness of jgnat and Laika's comments: the publishers see them go around in a corporate mentality, the "we" thinking before the congo. Years ago one would see some deviation here and there with some elders speaking freely to publishers about individual opinions. It may not be as prevalent today but I doubt that this has completley disappeared. Indeed some here have told of recent experiences where they witnessed such individuality. Of course, in elders' meetings such individuality is often prevalent, sometimes extreme. But whatever dissonance or even infighting goes on there, putting on that unity face before the congo is frequently all the publishers see, just as the holy org so dictates. This may best explain the "we" mentality that jgat and Laika note. I wonder how well they got to know individual elders personally. Tornapart's comments possibly show some intimate knowledge of a lack of "we" thinking.

  I NEVER Hear A JW Talk About Never Dying & Living Forever In Paradise Anymore!

  i was raised with this belief, that we would never die and actually make it into the "new system".

  mu faithful jw aunt still talked about my mother (her sister) and her walking together into the great tribulation--- and never die at all!

  she spoke of that 2 days before she passed away.. i believe most witnesses expect to die and then get resurrected.

  I don't associate much any more but at least some here must have noticed the same phenomenon I did when I was active. As certain old ones get near death, they begin to watch the news/world events very closely. I remember going over to this old brother's home for a visit just before he died. The guy had been very active, had pioneered, had children who were very active, etc. He had eschewed television and was always busy in Jah's service. Now, however, he was fairly glued to the TV, watching the news every day, stating how this or that world event was going to blow up into Armageddon. Today it would be like watching the Russia-Ukraine thing and being convinced that it would cause the GT to begin. I remember how when I left his home, I felt so sorry for the man. It was only the fact that he knew he was close to the grave that caused him to get so prophetic. His case was not unique. That's so sad, isn't it?

  Sorry if this wandered a bit off topic. Ginger's comment about "desperate, aging pioneers" made me think of it. XstuckX's comment too.
