Are Jehovah's Witnesses A Cult?
by What Now? ini came across a great quote.... the distinction between cult and religion lies squarely in how those leaving or those wanting to leave are treated.. hits the nail on the head for me!.

The best way to debate JW's without being labeled an apostate
by cookiemaster inhey guys!
here's what i found to be the best way (for me at least) to debate jw's without earning the laber of apostate.
this is mostly valid when debating jw's that don't know you personally, but it could help with those that do too.

I prefer the approach Billy the ex-Bethelite discussed: pretend someone else--a friend, relative, workmate, someone in "the ministry"--asked the question and you were stumped.
It's gold!

Why do ultra rich jehovahs witnesses get a free pass when it comes to being materialistic?
by hoser ini know a couple of jws in my town that are both very wealthy.
one has upscale retail stores and owns a property development company.
the other has a large service company and owns a lot of real estate.

Couple questions....like if JW's not the right way then what is?
by world innew member here so don't attack :d here is a couple questions i have been contemplating lately.. .
if jw isn't the right religion, then which one is?
or is it basically believe in god, the bible and you'll be fine?.

Welcome!
You've already gotten a lot of really good responses.
But I will add these questions: Is it reasonable to speak of "The Truth" as if it were a physical thing that can only be possessed by one person or even a single group? Does that even make any sense?
An honest consideration of these questions leads inevitablty to only one answer for both: No.
An equally honest examination of the Jehovah's Witness religion quickly reveals that it is not at all about spreading "Truth" as claimed, but it is about unquestioning obedience and loyalty to the organization.
Learn to think for yourself. You'll be glad you did. And then you'll understand why that is the greatest crime a JW can commit.

Today's wt "study" obfuscations
by prologos inparagraph 9 : " jesus blood validates the new covenant -- makes posiible the forgiveness sins for all time#.-- [and]--.
god could apply the value of jesus' shed blood to adams descendants--*.
--he could** also adopt certain --humans "as sons"--".

This doesn't sound like obfuscation as much as it is just weak speculation cobbled together by a bunch of weasal words.

They also say they have "the Truth."
It's doublespeak and it's doubleplusungood.

Elders and priests what 's the difference?
by sparrowdown inis being a "good" elder the same as being a "good" catholic priest?.
is there any difference between representing the rcc and representing that other bastion of child abuse the wt?.

FHN: The level of education and training is vastly different.
Yes, priests have much, much more training and education.
I am not endorsing the Catholic church, or any other religion for that matter. It's just that the level of training is much greater.
For example, here are the educational requirements for candidate for the Catholic priesthood in the Albany, New York diocese:
Educational Requirements
The educational requirements for priesthood ordination are as follows:
- Four-year undergraduate degree in any field of study.
- Two-year Pre-Theology Program - Thirty (30) credit hours in selected areas of philosophy and twelve (12) credit hours in selected areas of theology.
- Four-year Master of Divinity degree from a Catholic seminary.
Compare this to the educational requirements for a JW elder:
- Requirements:
- Do you know God's name?
- Can you be obedient to any and all directions from the "Faithful and Discreet Slave," even if they makes no sense?
- Are you older than 23?
- Have you successfully served as a Ministerial Servant for at least "a number of years," putting up with the BS from the local elders?
- Note: BS in this context does NOT stand for Bachelor's of Science
- Are you able to at least appear to go out in the Field Ministry 10 hours per month, on average?
- Do you and every member of your family own an iPad or equivalent device?
- Possible Disqualifications:
- Do you have any education beyond secondary school? (This is actually a negative).
- Definite Disqualifications:
- Are you prone to "Independent Thinking" and/or research on your own?
- Would you turn a pedophile over to the local police?
