I'm always looking for ways to deal productively with JW family members.
And I try to give advice to those who are struggling if I feel like I have any insight to give.
And I've grown to really like a lot of you. :)
when i joined this forum i was seeking more people who felt the same way i did in terms of seeing the jehovah's witness organization for what it truly was; a false prophet.. once i found like-minded members i slowly started to open up and participate more in trying to help others that were also exiting mentally and physically.
today, i offer support to anyone who desires it regardless of what they believe or not believe.. so what is your purpose on this board?.
support?

none of my jehovah's witness relatives called to tell me or my family.
just found out this morning.
earlier this morning, i posted off to the the institute of engineers an application for membership as an "engineering associate":.
- today being just over 40 years since the congregation's retards elders made me abandon my apprenticeship.. (in this part of the world, the pre-1975 hype was taken to that level.
not being content to prevent young persons attending university, they went one step further and treated with hostility any youngster who would "tie up five years of their lives" by entering into an apprenticeship.
Major congratulations! It feels good, doesn't it?
I am not a crier, but I bawled like a baby when I finally got my degree. It's just that emotional.

as an educator, i am very interested in where the society is heading with their alleged "bible education" program.

Heaven, if you like "Stellaluna," consider "Verde" by the same author, Janell Cannon. It's about a young green snake with lots of energy that desperately doesn't want to become an old, boring yellow snake like all of his elders. Does he stay young and green forever?
Glorious illustrations on every page done in "Liquatex acrylics and Prismacolor pencils."

Oops, Oubliette, I missed that originally! Maybe I was distracted by that ridiculous movie Elf that my son is watching in the background...
Or maybe I just wasn't reading carefully and need to go back to my desk and use details from the text to answer appropriately while everyone else goes out to recess... :(

Yes, Oubliette, even kindergarteners start being taught critical thinking. If I were reading this text, we would need to decide whether this is fiction or non-fiction. Easy enough.
Then we would need to discuss whether this fictional story is realistic fiction or fantasy. As the book continues, it becomes clear that this is fantasy because the animals talk to each other.
And that is a powerful thing to teach a 5 year old: whether something could be true or not. This is how critical thinking begins.

So, I decided to use the readability index on a page from the children's picturebook entitled, "Stellaluna." It's the story of a baby fruit bat who loses her mother and is raised by birds. It's popular this time of year because of the bat - Halloween connection.
This is something I would read to kindergarteners or first graders. Keep in mind that they have the ability to access text that is read to them before they can actually read ( decode) the words. If I were teaching the text for decoding, this would be about 3rd grade level.
Here is one page that I typed into the readability calculator. Make a guess as to the reading level.
"One night, as Mother Bat followed the heavy scent of ripe fruit, an owl spied her. On silent wings the powerful bird swooped down upon the bats. Dodging and shrieking, Mother Bat tried to escape, but the owl struck again and again, knocking Stellaluna into the air. Her baby wings were as limp and useless as wet paper. Down, down she went, faster and faster, into the forest below."
Make a guess as to the grade level? Grade 6.0! I think these scores dramatically overestimate the difficulty of these texts! Just think, folks, this text from a children's picturebook has more difficult text than the Bible Teach book!
Interestingly, the one index that measured grade 3.2 and seems to be the most accurate to me is called the SMOG index. What does that stand for? The Standard Measure of Gobbledygook! Not kidding!
