So much of it is about control, really. If the wts were to ever admit that the Flood or some other Bible account previosuly considered historical was in reality simply allegorical, much of the control would erode.

Was there really a global flood? (new publication reasoning)
by Simon inthe latest "keep on the watch" publication released at the district assembly really looks like a rehash of old material (and even old pictures ... they must be running out of paint or something!)..
one 'gem' caught my eye flicking through it.
how do you reason with people to convince them that the bible account of a global flood is real?.

moses and the rock
by fairy in.
i was just thinking about when moses was leading people to the promised land.....and he hit the rock and said i give you water instead of giving the praise to jehovah, well, this is my opinion that if all moses did was say i give you water and didnt give praise to jehovah, then, what hope is there for a lot of the witnesses ......they do a lot worse than that............ what do you think

Assuming for a moment that it isn't a fairy-tale, the account has always troubled me. It seems that Jehovah dealt with Moses very severely, not permitting him to enter the promised land because of it.
Up until then, Moses had taken on enormous responsibilty and was under much stress from a "stiff-necked people". So, he loses his cool in this instance, and after everything good he did up until then, he's barred from entrance to the Land.
I guess the account is one reason why so many people feel that the God of the Old Testament is not the God portrayed in the New Testament.

What has always bothered me about the whole Williams sisters thing is that so many jw youths who had athletic talent were told by elders and parents (based on jw publications of course) that they could not participate in organized sports. And I do mean could not, not simply should not, in most instances. They just simply were not allowed to.
Then we have the Williams sisters, as deeply involved in oragnized sports and the "world" as anyone can be. And then Serena is invoking Jehovah, just as she did when she won last year's US Open.
I don't mind what the Williams girls are doing - it's healthy and normal to be playing tennis. I just deplore the hypocrisy as other jw youths are told not to pursue their passions, whether it be athletics, acting, singing, or other endeavors.

by rocketman ini took the "belief-o-matic" survey at beliefnet yesterday, and it looks like i am a mormon.
the survey matches your beliefs on various matters to the creeds of the world's religions and assigns a percentage.

I took the "Belief-O-Matic" survey at Beliefnet yesterday, and it looks like I am a Mormon.
The survey matches your beliefs on various matters to the creeds of the world's religions and assigns a percentage. I was 100% Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints. Next up was Jehovah's Witnesses, whose creeds I matched to the 82nd percentile. That's no surprise, since I am a baptized (though inactive) Witness and have been for 31 years.
When I looked at the link to Mormon beliefs, I found them to be somewhat strange in several respects and certainly not a body of teaching that I would subscribe to. So I retook the survey.
Next time around, I decided to click on the responses that I really felt, rather than what I simply acknowledged could be true. For example, in the matter of homosexuality, though there are certain Bible verses that can be used to condemn the practice, I personally am somewhat more accepting of it.
The second survey pegged me as Liberal to Moderate Protestant. Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons were much further down on the list. That seems to be a better fit, though I'm not about to run to the nearest Lutheran church. But, when a religion shows some degree of flexibility and an openness to other possibilities (such as evolution theory) I am more inclined in that direction.....at least I think I am. Who knows, maybe I'm a Mormon after all.

How Would You / Did You Handle Disfellowshipping?
by minimus in....as in if you personally were df'd or someone close to you was??
?

Someone close - I'd treat them the way I always did. I certainly wouldn't shun them. If they did something really repugnant, I'd let them know I did not approve. But I'd still speak with them and carry on normal family/friendly relations.

Blood Transfusions are Biblically Supported
by allpoweredup into jehovah's witnesses elders: blood transfusions are biblically supported: acts 15:20 says abstain from blood but 1 samuel 14:32-5 says saul's army ate unbled meat to not starve and no verses show god not forgiving them.
christ says god also forgave david's eating temple holy bread to survive and that god wants mercy not sacrifice.
(mt 12) the may 22, 1994 awake tells of 26 jehovah's witness kids who died without transfusions, and by common sense in massive bleeding as in car wrecks blood expanders won't save lives http://www.ajwrb.org.

I don't think allpowerdup really needs to re-read his Bible.
Basically, the "sin" in this account was forgiven. Sure, it was a serious matter, but forgiveness was possible.
Actually, one must ask how much this account even has to do with blood transfusions. The wts says that this account shows that even in "emergencies" God's law on blood is not to be circumvented. I once had to make that exact point as school overseer when the point came up during a written review. At that time, I seriously considered skipping the question - that's how much I questioned their interpretation.
This situation in Samuel was no emergency - it was precipitated by the rash oath of an idiotic king, Saul. This cannot in any way relate to the situation of a person who is in danger of losing their life in a medical dilemma.
Also, forgiveness by God was possible, even when people acted "greedily" due to excess hunger. This was a food consumption issue, and even as such, God could overlook such an example of supposed greed. Is a person who wants to preserve life by considering a blood transfusion acting "greedily"? And if God can forgive, with proper appeasement, this "greedy" consumption of food, can he not forgive one who chooses to preserve their own life, not in some act of selfishness, but because it's the normal human thing to do?

I wonder if Jeopardy will change some of their rules back to what they were previously. They had increased the money and also waived the 5-day limit for champions.
On the other hand, this guy's success is bringing much more attention than the show normally gets. Heck, who would have thought we'd have a Jeopardy thread here?
