I love the "Sister Jolie" phrasing.

Are judicial committees titillating when the wrongdoer is attractive?
by JimmyPage inis it more interesting to the elders if the sister doing naughty things is sexy?
or is it just uncomfortable for everyone no matter what?
do their questions get more or less detailed depending on looks?

Stevie Nicks -- witch?
by gloobster indo the jw's still consider stevie nicks from fleetwood mac to be a pagan witch-type?
i picked out the song "landslide" for my mother's funeral about a month ago, which most of my extended family, jw's one and all, attended.
it didn't even cross my mind when i selected the song, my mom just had always liked it.

I never heard anything about Nicks being a witch. A nasal-sounding singer yes; a witch, no.

Are the number of non-JW related Topics increasing at JWD?
by nicolaou inon the typical page of 20 topics you'll most likely find that up to half of them are not related to the jw experience at all.
i think that percentage has grown over the past 7+ years that i've been here.
not sure what it means though .

I've found that this is actually quite a good site for non-jw topics. There's good discussions to be had here on a variety of matters. I think that's a good thing. I'm at a point where talking about jw topics gets to be like beating a dead horse. But I've hung around mainly because this board is pretty cool for discussing other stuff too.

Lots of good replies....
For me, some of the stipulations surrounding separation and divorce were very difficult to defend, especially the notion that a woman had to be in 'extreme physical abuse' to justify separation (and that still didn't give her "scriptural grounds" to divorce). So basically, a woman had to have the crap beat out of her to justify leaving.
Another area was the nitpicking in regard to so-called sexual misconduct. Such misconduct varied between everything from momentary touching of a woman's breast to fondling them, etc. I'll never forget an elders meeting with the CO in which we went point-by-point through the Society's oddball designations of what consituted "uncleaness", etc., and trying to match such terms to the conduct to which they were applied. It boiled down to a roomfull of guys discussing breast-touching.

Serena Williams and her "god jehovah"
by worf inafter losing the wimbledon championship to her sister venus, serena williams was being interviewed on the court yesterday, and here is part of what she said: "i thank my god jehovah for being out here".. okay, so according to her words, jehovah blessed her by allowing her to be there to participate in a competitive sports championship match.
and not just any match.
wimbledon!

I have no problem with what Serena and Venus are doing. After all, the problem is that jw kids have, for decades, been strongly discouraged from pursuing activities which are totally normal - such as those in which the Williams sisters participate freely and evidently without censure.

My Avatar and yours
by LockedChaos injust curious .
any symbolism or meaning to your avatar choice?
mine is actually a gif .
-

My avatar is the cover of Elton John's Rock Of The Westies album released in October 1975. The symbolism is, of course, that 1975 was the "appropriate time for God to act" according to the WTBS, and expectations ran high, especially for October, which seems to be the jw's favorite month for the, ahem, "fulfillment" of all things prophetic.

I'm not necessarily "Christian" but I do like the NIV. It's much easier to read and more fluid than the balky NWT.

Prior to Super Bowl 12, Super Bowls were afternoon events. I missed the first half of Super Bowl 7 and in fact only recently caught it on NFL Network. My brother, a Colts fan, missed a good chunk of Super Bowl III because of a meeting. One thing that still irks me is that I missed the NFC Championship Game between the Buccaneers and Rams in 2000 due to an elders meeting. The stupid elders actually picked that date and time for a meeting. Not exactly an aware group of football fans, that's for sure. Another time, I missed the AFC Championship Game between Denver and Pittsburgh (1999) because of attending elders' school. I'm still peeved about that one too.

No matter what one's opinion, I'd say that this is very well written, and a lot more fun to read than Genesis.

Well, I have about 3,800 posts. At, say, an average of 50 words per post, that gives me 190,000 words. So yeah, they count. :)
