i live in europe.

for the last 15 year's probably 25 person i knew or more were df, pimo, left by own will, inactive.

JW gone bad. But when you factor in, of that 6.7 U,S mormons, only 2 million are actually involved in the movement. It is also estimated that there could be as little as 1.5 million through out the world that are tithing paying temple recommend holders. A completely different story begins to emerge. My advice is take Mormon figures with a grain of salt.

I think the Mormon church may be doing worse than the JWs with regard to retention. They just hide it better.

Rivergang- I totally agree with you. The point In question is the activity rates of the 2 different groups. Those that consistently turn up to their religious denominations and are actively engaged.

I totally disagree that Wt is forging numbers. I think they are perhaps been overly truthful. When you start comparing similar groups, that are also having the same problems. It makes the 8 million publisher count look very reasonable.

In a very broad and general sense I’d that SDA, LDS, JWs, are all similar in membership. Factoring in those that truly believe it. Are in it for family reasons etc.

Here are some things to think about.

LDS rely on a 3 children birth rate to support membership in the USA. The JWs lose 2/3 of their children, to support their membership in the USA.

The lds claims a world wide membership of 16 million. When in reality some estimates say it could be as low as 3 million. Those who believe it enough to hold a temple recommend would certainly be lower than that.

We compare this with the JW 8 million world wide. The 3 million and the 8 million are certainly with in range of each other.

Even if 50% of the JW were PIMO. It would make the 3 million lds figure look very believable.

In the country I live in, which is outside the USA. The census shows there are twice as many members claiming to be JWs as the publisher count. However, in recent times the census has shown a drop while publisher count has remained steady. This could be explained as recent leavers are more aware of the BS of watchtower, rather than leaving for more secular reasons, but still identify with it.

To be honest I love making comparisons with the LDS. Yes I do believe the JWs are fudging numbers. If anything they are underestimating numbers. Time and time again when you compare the publisher count with the country census, they are vastly different. The JWs certainly are a bigger more engaged religion than that of the Mormon church. I would also suggest when you start making comparisons with a 3.5- 4million lds membership, it makes the 8 million JW membership look very believably.

It just hit me when I heard John Dehlin comment about the 3 member house hold propping the Mormon church up. Yet the JWs lose 2/3 of their youth and still have a more healthier membership. Even if 50% of the JWs are pimo. They still are doing better than the Mormon church. Who is the biggest lier? I’d say the Mormon church.

Ok fair enough. Now compare this with a quote from John Delin, of Mormon stories pod cast, where he says “ the only thing that is stopping the Mormon church from free fall in the USA, is the Mormon birth rate of 3 children per house hold.”

There are a couple of things to think about here?

LDS need 3 children house holds to stop membership from free fall in the USA. On the other hand JWs lose 2/3 of their youth but still manage to maintain their membership in the USA.

Mormons have been encouraged to have families, and in some cases large ones. JWs have been discouraged from having any children. One could assume with the ageing JW membership, along with the attitude to having children. Their stocks would be a lot lower in supporting membership in the USA through internal births. This hasn’t happened, as yet, as it’s been 1.2 million JW members in the USA for some time.

Slim boy : I remember John Dehlin, from Mormon stories podcast ( the equivalent Lloyd Evans in JWland) saying that it was the “Mormon birth rate of 3 children per family that was stopping the Mormon membership from free fall in the US.” If this is true. Then JWs losing 2/3 of their youth while still holding its membership in the USA is certainly impressive. My God that is just off the charts.

This is completely anecdotal. Based on similar type organisations. The JWs PIMI rate would be at a minimum of 3-4 million members. I suspect it is a lot higher than that. Also bear in mind no one knows for sure what the POMI rate is either, which could boost numbers . I have this feeling that those that fit the definition of PIMO would be no higher than 15%, and that’s been very optimistic. The trouble is that 15% get on the internet and cause watchtower 90% of its problems. I think if it got into the realms, like some have suggested, of 30-40% the org would just claps.

I know everyone likes to quote the “pew,2/3” thing. But as has been demonstrated this falls woefully short of the mark. There are certainly other organisations that are taking bigger hits. It could be that they are better at hiding it. How bad / good are they doing. I could argue both ways.

I’m really in two minds as to just how well or badly the JWs are doing, when everything is factored in. It’s almost coming up to my 10th anniversary from when I physically walked out of the KH ( please no need to applause. Lol) . But from my observations then, it was district conventions with empty seats. Lots of grey heads and almost devoid of any 18-30 year olds. I deeply regret having stayed for as long as I did.

my in-laws are two such people.

people who pioneered and did not work and try to save, instead they made just enough to get by and waited for the end to come.

now my mil is in palliative care and the state is paying for her keep, my fil lives in a dilapidated home and can not keep it up.

I knew this pioneer sister. Who went into pioneering virtually straight from school. She had the goal of going to bethel. To be honest I fancied her, so I decided to sit in on a bethel recruiting meeting with her. I remember seeing the look of disappointment and frustration on her face, hearing a governing body member saying the were requiring the skills of nurses and hospital personal. This pioneer sister was ultra PIMI. Last I heard she is still pioneering, still no closer to Bethel, and not married to me. Lol

WT paints this idea that Russel was teaching his contemporaries; however, I believe it might of been the other way around, with his contemporaries teaching him.
