  What were your reasons for not liking the ministry school?

  i dropped out years ago because i couldn't stand getting together with sisters i didn't like to do a talk.

  i hated it with a passion!!

  i do realize that you did learn but what i resented was that the sisters were inflicted on each other in a way that i don't think the brothers were.

  When I was School overseer I was always trying to get the sisters to think imaginatively like you and your mum. It was rare anyone tried. I'm glad some sisters tried to make the most of a misogynistic arrangement, good for you.

  When on the school I used to try and incorporate lyrics from music that I liked, usually from the Smiths or Prince. It kept me and my other disrespectful friends amused. I also remember that while my big brother took the school I'd always use an illustration that took the piss out of him - it was nice slagging him off to a large group of people.

  Saluting the American Flag

  the other day my wife and i were at a function and the naitonal anthem was sung.

  my wife wouldnt stand because the society tells her not to.

  i think this is disgusting.

  But, do the witnesses in the United Kingdom stand up and sing God Save the Queen? If not, were there ever any ramafications to that? Just curious.

  From what I recall, they can stand up if the sovereign is present, but not sing. Few JWs attend the same events as the Queen. Other events where she wasn't present and the anthem is played, they would stay seated, and the worst ramification would be a glance and a tut.

  Saying that, I can't think of any event I've been at in the past 20 years where the anthem is played. That's a lie. It's been played at rugby matches and we've (Scots) all booed. That's how seriously we take the anthem. You lot seem a tad fanatical from our reserved point of view.

  Slacker Pioneering

  as i was reading the thread about not at homes i wondered if anyone else a slacker pioneer?.

  there was a bunch of us in our hall that went out on a wednesday.

  we usually managed about 45mins before needing a coffee which somehow extended through lunchtime, maybe interupted by a return visit that hopefully wasn't home.

  Last JW meeting

  my last was the summer convent of 1986. i stood there until everyone left and then i took a picture with my new camera of the empty stadium, the wish being that the wts would collapse and never fill up again stadiums with people.

  I should add that I didn't feel angry because while I was being described as borderline wicked for not answering, declining the offer of a bible study, meeting ex Witnesses, and questioning the need for reporting I was thinking that if only they knew about the sex I was having with my boyfriend, these would seem pretty trivial.

  It was in May 2002.

  I'd had six months of not attending meetings, then went back for a couple of months as an observer. One eveing just before the TMS & SM my mum said she could tell my heart wasn't in it. I'd planned on going for a couple of more months as I was supposed to be a witness for a friends wedding, then I was going to stop. We agreed that night would be my last meeting. Turned out to be a corker. My friend's dad got up and gave a talk about me. No name, just a description of individuals the congregation should avoid that fitted only me. After the meeting everyone avoided eye contact with me.

  I'd grown up there, been one of their shepherds, and loved a lot of them. My poor mum was a lot angrier than me.

  As I was reading the thread about Not at Homes I wondered if anyone else a slacker pioneer?

  There was a bunch of us in our hall that went out on a Wednesday. We usually managed about 45mins before needing a coffee which somehow extended through lunchtime, maybe interupted by a Return Visit that hopefully wasn't home. These Wednesday mornings were gradually dominated by a widower who began having us back to his for coffee and biscuits (there were one particular caramel sort that we fought over), but it got a little out of control when he started providing hot vol au vents. Sometimes the afternoon was spent at an art gallery or the cinema. I think I went to see Trainspotting one Wednesday afternoon with another pioneer. I know my report was complete fabrication, so I guess the others' were too.

  Anyone else? Or were you all suckered in to seriously saving souls?

  ever since i left the jw's i visited a few born-again christian churches and i felt like i was sitting in a kingdom hall of jw's.

  because born-agains are more like jw's then they want to admit.

  both jw's and ba's think they know everything.

  BookerT, seems like you've generalised way too much. LT couldn't be less like a JW or member of a cult, hell, he's aquainted with me a gay atheist. Well, maybe agnostic.

  I agree that there are some fundamentalist groups that are eerily like JWs, the Church of Christ for instance. I've been to a couple of the their meetings (out of nosiness) and their striking similarity with Witnesses was one of the things that helped me out. Raised with the belief that the Witnesses were unique I was shocked to discover that they weren't. To be in receipt of the (loving) pressure to have a bible study with them reminded me of myself speaking to individual that walked off the street into the KH. It was surreal.

  I'll let you carry on with your christoteric talk now. Partial preterist? Sheesh!

  While I'm aware that he has 1 or 2 gay advisors, I'm interested to know if you can provide evidence that 50% of them are gay. I'd also posit that the majority of supporters of the issues you mention (smacking ban, legalise cannabis, super casinos etc) are heterosexual. Only a minority gays want to smoke dope and gamble surrounded by unruly children.

  Of course, the party you favour in principle (UKIP) is endorsed by none other than Rustie Lee...

  personally, this is my first opportunity 'post wt mind-control' to vote for our next government.

  i don't suppose that i will - 40 years of 'neutrality' and non-involvement have rather flattened my desire to take part in political change.. how about you?

  Did anyone else watcth the Question Time special last night? Although it didn't alter how I'll vote it was a real pleasure to watch Blair look rather stressed. It was a bad day for Labour yesterday.

  And Charlie still comes off as the most affable. But would he or wouldn't he share a coalition with Brown?
