I wonder if they'll have that demo where the brother turns down a promotion because he's worried it will interfere with his meeting attendance? I only heard that one about 8 times which was just never enough to get the point.

Apostate NT Canon
by Pterist inas mentioned in july 15th 2013 watchtower "the apostasy started in the first century and flourished by the fourth century" or words to that effect.. as i was reading ff bruce's "the bible canon" ($14 kindle ver.
on amazon) i was very surprised to read that there are no original nt documents from the first century, just copies of copies of copies of many documents from that period.
apparently the 27 book nt canon was not set until about the fourth century by trinitarian church fathers.

And those same apostates removed Jehovah's name from the NT, but didn't change any of the other parts of the bible. Makes sense.

From among you yourselves men will rise and speak TWISTED things!
by The Searcher inprime example: the bible says - (john 5:28, 29) "do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment."(rnwt).
the wtbts explain verse 28 this way - in every reference of this verse; w99 4/1 p. 18 par.
17 - "yes, jesus christ promised that all those in jehovahs memory will be resurrected.".

Watchtower loves to quote Rev 21:4 'and death will be no more' but actually a lesser known doctrine of the Witnesses is that people can still sin and thus die in paradise, making this promise a lie.
This is because they use both Rev 21 and Isaiah 65 as prophecies about the 'promised paradise earth' and Isaiah 65 says people will still die. A real problem for them.

In need of advice...
by mobumpkin inhi i am new here thank you for letting me join.
i first of all want to say i am not here to bash the religion.
there are good people in the congregation but also bad ones.

According to Watchtower rules your sister is only allowed to talk to you about necessary family business and has no right to intefere in your relationship with your father as he is not a JW and they have no control over him. Since she is clearly going beyond this then a chat with a good elder, preferably one you used to be friends with, could work.
As Searcher said gathering evidence might help, however I disagree with Searcher that you should tell people you're witnessing about her hypocrisy. The way to get elders on your side is by appealing to them as 'kind people who just want to help' as this is how they fancy themselves, and not by threats against the beloved organisation/congregation.

Why JWs don't celebrate Mother's day
by Laika inin the uk, this sunday is mother's day!
ask a jw why they don't celebrate holidays and they'll tell you it's because of some nefarious pagan connection.
but this is really just a cover.
-
Laika
the other reason I was told that celebrations could not happen was if that celebration elevated a person above others or put them on a pedestal.
Creature worship! I've heard that too but I don't think the Watchtower puts that in print too much because it sounds crazy. (as it is crazy!)
Even the Society accepts that the Jews had a lot of holidays, JWs could borrow some Jewish days or invent their own but they don't because that doesn't crush your identity like nearly banning them all together.

What is the main "idea" of the bible?
by KateWild inas jws we were often told what the theme of the bible is, we were taught that it was the promised seed.. i was recently asked the question.... what is the main "idea" of the bible?.
for me the whole purpose of the bible is about control.
it features a god that punishes and rewards.

As JWs we were often told what the theme of the bible is, we were taught that it was the promised seed.
Not exactly the point of your topic but is this what the Society has said? Just interested because I don't remember hearing that.
I agree there's no one theme to scripture, but generally I think I would say the main one is about how God deals with 'evil' in the world. (But that's not to say there is only one definition of 'evil' in there either!?)

What Is The World View Of America?
by minimus ina lot of people felt that the usa's reputation was terrible, especially under president bush.
then obama became president and we heard how the rest of the world felt that finally they had a person that would respect them and their views and work with them!
the new president even ot a nobel peace prize because of the world's perception.. what's your view of america?

I've always liked Americans, you guys are delightful.

Need advice, really wanna play COD
by DuvanMuvan inwell my ps3 is downstairs because i had no idea how good games looked on tvs that weren't older than you are and i've run into a problem.
my mum doesn't know that i have "bad" games like cod, gta 5, legend of zelda and final fantasy (yeah ik last two aren't that bad but loads of religious stuff and magic) and it's getting harder to keep it a secret.. i was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on how i should go about this.
should i just wait a while and slowly introduce the idea to my mum that i play these games or should i just come out and play them and act like it'a nothing?.
-
Laika
There are far too many acronyms in this thread mate! I think I'd go with act like it's nothing and try to avoid getting violent in game when she's watching.

Is it all about the money?
by Laika inoften on this forum there are posts about how the gb are obsessed with money and some people here often suggest this impacts every decision the gb makes i.e.
on my holiday thread it was suggested jws aren't allowed to celebrate holidays as it means spending money on presents that they want for themselves.. i however, do not think this is at all true.
the society rarely talks about money and as a percentage of income i think the vast majority of jws contribute a very small amount simply because the society rarely talk about it.. obviously money is important to the society in the sense that they couldn't run a major organisation without it, so they have to ask for it at times and factor it in to some of their decision making, but actually the gb live quite frugally and seem to worry much more about clinging to their authority and power than getting rich.. my controversial suggestion of the day is that saying the gb are obsessed with money must make us look silly to lurkers.. what does the jwn intellegentsia think then?.
-
Laika
£500 per month is about $800 US. Of course it works out at a lot of money total as there's millions of people but the amount per person is very small. I think if you did a survey of regular church/religious service attenders you'd find JWs give far less as individuals than members of most/all other groups. This is because the Society is not driven by money.

All the while, all the money is sent to the Worldwide Damnation Fund so they can spread damnation books everywhere in the world.
I am not entirely sure what you mean here wtwizard but I used to be accounts servant and the money we sent to the Worldwide fund was about £500 a month, which is a really pathetic amount in a congregation with 100 publishers. Lots of JWs never give and very few give even over 1%, let alone tithe.
