Disfellowshipping Image
by naazira inthis photo can be found in the april 15 , study edition article titled:.
why disfellowshipping is a loving provision.
just by looking at this image we can see how quickly the barrier between the congregation and former member is put up, after the announcement that this sister is no longer one of jehovah's witneses.

Governing Body Mandating That Parents Shun DF'd Preteens Baptized Children Will Hurt Them Big Time In The Courts
by Brokeback Watchtower inas the bad conduct of the governing body becomes widely known to both judge and jury i expect that will make lawsuits more profitable against them and easier wins against them and more plentiful.. i think probably one of the most damming videos out there on the net is the one where the parents show their loyalty to the wt corporation and shun their own flesh and blood in obedience to it cruel directives.
this video truely shows that the governing body don't give a shit about the children who symbolize their dedication to the corporation or their parents.. such a self serving corporation that uses it members for profits only and offer nothing in return no matter how much how much they claim otherwise.
they can't hide this it is plain as day so no matter how much they claim they are concerned about the youth in the organization their action thunder loudly and can not be hiden under a basket.

sparrowdown - When does shunning become a human rights violation?
A case can be made that what the JWs do is a violation of Human Rights...In fact, I believe some people may be trying to make the case officially or have already tried.
United Nations Declaration of Human Rights:
Article 12.
- No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.
Article 18.
- Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.
Added the following after I posted, which may or may not be another infringed right:
Article 27.
- (1) Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.
- (2) Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author.

Is 2 feet + 3 meters= 5 meters? Jehovah's witnesses say yes it is!
by quincemyles inhave you noticed that adding 607 b.c.e roman/gregorian years to 2520 jewish biblical/prophetic years to get 1914 roman/gregorian years c.e is like adding 2 feet + 3 meters= 5 meters?.
the insights volume ii under heading year, mentions that a bible or prophetic year is reckoned to have 360 days.
many other publications indicate that a prophetic year is 360 days long.

Yes. And, I totally missed that problem when I was in and it wasn't until years later that I was looking up stuff I used to believe that I saw it. It was a glaring error. I could not understand how such an obvious problem had escaped me at the time.
It reminds me of the Mars Climate Orbiter disaster:
"...on September 23, 1999, communication with the spacecraft was lost as the spacecraft went into orbital insertion, due to ground-based computer software which produced output in non-SI units of pound-seconds (lbf×s) instead of the metric units of newton-seconds (N×s) specified in the contract between NASA and Lockheed. The spacecraft encountered Mars on a trajectory that brought it too close to the planet, causing it to pass through the upper atmosphere and disintegrate"

If shunning was a conscience matter?
by aintenoughwiskey inwhat do you think the reaction would be?
i would say a small portion (single digit) would walk.
no loss for the borg, they weren't donating anyway.

steve2 - For these Witnesses, shunning is an action that can never be overdone.
Absolutely true. As you pointed, there are plenty (including my family) that at some level "relish the act of shunning". JWs are definitely of the mindset of "suffering as a virtue". When the name is announced from the podium there is both sadness and relief (Yay! it wasn't me!) and a smug sense of superiority.
And, if my family stopped shunning because it became a matter of conscience, I am not sure I would want them in my life again. I have had over 25 years of being kicked around like a soccer ball every time they relax or tighten their stance on shunning. Why would I want relationships to be dictated by the next talk or magazine article? There are better people out there just about anywhere else.

DATA-DOG - The worst thing the WTBTS could ever imagine is an ex-JW Lawyer working for Zalkin. Can you even imagine?
That would be cool. Or maybe one of their accountants...Can you imagine?

Mentally Diseased - is it partly our fault that we got this label?
by cappytan ini was thinking about this the other day.. a common way for apostates to "fade" is to pretend to have depression or anxiety problems.. is it possible, that when apostates become known, the elders report to the society that said person was undergoing mental health problems?
i can see a scenario where the society then took those statistics that were reported and just decided, "well, it looks like the only ones leaving are those with mental diseases.".
oh, and not to mention the subliminal messages conspiracy theorists.

Demonizing an enemy is one of the basic tenets of warfare - From Wikipedia - "Demonization is the oldest propaganda technique aimed to inspire hatred toward the enemy necessary to hurt them more easily, to preserve and mobilize allies and demoralize the enemy."
They are not making a medical or psychological assessment. What this does is allow them to justify the treatment of the "other" (i.e. ex-JWs). On a side note, I never tried to "infect others" with my ideas. I kept my mouth shut about the JWs for over a decade. Once, they started the name-calling, all bets were off.

sir82 - At the very least, such videos should be shown in every child custody / divorce case where one parent is a JW and one is not.
Good point.
In a related topic - My brother (a JW) and his wife (a non-JW) were trying to adopt. They were turned down a number of times because the case worker determined that (a) having a mixed-belief marriage with a high-control religion creates a harmful environment and (b) the dangers of the JW doctrines (e.g. Blood Issue, Shunning) would be a potential harm to the child.

Is RIDICULE acceptable in online debating?
by nicolaou inthis topic was inspired by one of fhn's comments on the 'warzone' thread, so i'll just restate my post there .
.. "i've been wondering for a while now if ridicule really is an unacceptable feature in debate - it certainly isn't a valid form of argumentation.
the thing is, some individuals really do come out with the most laughable nonsense and parade it as a serious proposition that merits attention.

Great comments...
I would say that there may be times that ridiculing an idea (not the person) is the only response. But, I typically find that asking basic/obvious questions of a premise helps the other person realize that their idea might be ridiculous.
Also, I have found personally that if I am going to attempt humor, it is probably better to "Punch up. Don't punch down." In other words, I try to aim the humor at the privileged and powerful as opposed to the disenfranchised and powerless.

Why Jehovah Does Not Want An Effective Preaching Work
by konceptual99 inso we all know how ineffectual the preaching work really is.
we also know how much the wts hypes up the scope and scale of the global preaching effort.
what the gb should be doing however is emphasising the ineffectiveness of the preaching work.

But wait, God's plan falls apart even more when you consider what many JWs claim. At Armageddon, the idea is that "then they will know that I am Jehovah!". WTF? Ok. Imagine you are just an average person and fire starts raining from the sky, the earth splits open, lightning, thunder, etc. - i.e. another Michael Bay movie.
Between the time that you see it and the time that every atom of your being is separated from every other atom of your being, is your last thought going to be "Darn. I should have listened to those people that came to my door. I guess they were right after all. Oh, well. Well played, God. My bad...". Or, is it going to be "Holy Crap! WWIII is starting! Who did we piss off?" or "Asteroids!" or "Terrorists!" or something more in the forefront of the average mind?
Wait, it gets better as I have had JWs say that "Jehovah" would make it clear that it is him causing the destruction so there is no confusion. Wow! Ok. Maybe God should make himself clearly known before Armageddon and stop playing an eternal game of hide-and-seek. Maybe more people would believe.
If the goal is to save as many people as possible, I think a brain-dead ferret could come up with a better plan.
