I got on with *some* JW kids, but most were either really holier-than-thou or were living double lives and were bad news so I didn't make friends with many or stay friends with those I did.
There was a JW girl in the other half of my year who I said hey to in the corridors and sometimes saw at lunch, but the vast majority of my friends were nice worldly kids of a variety of denominations.
My mum's best friend is worldly, they have been best friends since they were 12.

How many here grew up JW but had worldly friends?
by Jez inmy best friend was worldly all through elementary to high school.
we are still good friends.
i wonder if that led to our being a tad bit more open minded and aided in our exit???

Corporal punishment
by JustTickledPink inmy opinion is that jw's are into corporal punishment more than the general population.
maybe it's my imagination, maybe not.. do you remember being told "not to spare the rod" in disciplining children?
do you remember being that kid that got beat?.

When I was somewhere between six and eight I saw a woman shake a (approximately) ten-month-old in the little cloakroom/sitting area just inside the ladies' loos in the KH.
She made three sharp shakes then held the baby tightly to her chest (handling it roughly to turn it towards herself, etc). There were other mothers around who didn't seem to bat an eyelid. -

Early Christians took to heart that Jehovah does not love violence or violent ones, and neither should Christians today.
ROTFLMFAO! God doesn't love violence? -

"Left Behind" Series Gets Left Behind
by Stephanus init seems that the writers of the scarey vision of the apocalypse that the left behind series creates aren't happy about alternative views of what the book of revelation means.
tyndale house, which publishes the left behind books, are publishing a new series of fiction based on revelation, this time giving the preterist view an airing.
preterism assumes that most of the events of revelation happened in the first century.

I am friends with a Christian fanatic and she raves about the books like they were lost books of the Bible, so I read the first one. I tried to read it with an open mind, but FFS it's the worst book ever written! When I'd heard about the plot (the Israeli making sand-fertilizer thing... then they become the richest nation on Earth by *agriculture*... the country is *tiny*!) I thought they were JOKING! Why do right-wing Christians love the state of Israel with such scary intensity... if Jews are "God's chosen people" then bloody *convert* and STFU!
*And* there's *no* tension at all about the identity of the anti-Christ, there's really SICK elements like all unborn babies disappearing - even during birth and leaving mothers anguished, there are more people in it (with really stupid names like "Royston Cheerio" OK I made that one up, but they're like that) than crowd scenes in Ben-Hur, and, I'm sorry, but the idea of people shooting up to heaven like naked rockets is just plain HILARIOUS.
I like the idea of "Kiss My Left Behind" though... will have to see if my library has it. -

No, no John Denver just plain *hates* the JWs! :D
What about the one similar to the Avon story where the JW is walking down an alley and there is a rapist waiting in the shadows. She sees the man and begins to pray - later when the man is arrested, he says he didn't attack her because of the "big guys walking with her".
Oh and when the good JW parents burn the rebellious teen's rock records and the WON'T BURN!!
Or when the poor starving pioneer couple come home to find food on their doorstep. Jehovah put it there. Not a word of gratitude to the actual human donor though...
Or when the poor starving pioneer couple are walking in a field and they keep finding eggs.
Have heard the last two off the platform - and the Avon one, but hadn't heard the Smurf one til I came here, so maybe an American thing, or just before my time. -

Dawn of the Dead / Shaun of the Dead
by Simon inok, watched both of these the other night .... "dawn of the dead" was a bit comic while trying to be scary imo (very predictable), shaun of the dead was genuinely funny and not a bad scary flic in spit of that.. what was your favourite?.
i think "night of the living dead" was scarier that dotd because it was grittier.
horror films are better low budget (ala blair witch).. "28 days later" was scarier because it looked more realistic and was gritty instead of glossy.

"Shaun of the Dead" is brilliant - you *need* to see the TV series "Spaced" if you haven't already.

Moral Divide Between The US and UK?
by Englishman inthis is from a recent poll by populus limited.
d) always illegal - abortion should not be permitted under any circumstances.. abortion should be...all (gb).
c) there should not be any legal recognition of same sex couples.. law towards same-sex couplesall (gb).

During the presidential elections, both Bush and Kerry frequently said "God bless America" - it would be very jarring if any of our party leaders said "God bless the UK".

My CD walkman plays MP3 files, and fits about 170 onto a CD (I can also play whole Harry Potter audiobooks from 1 CD - that's 30hrs listening for the latest book!), it was only £30 so it's a huge bargain.
Mostly I listen to music via my computer, VH2, or 6 Music. -
