Mum never made us do "Armageddon Drills" but I was so afraid of the Great Tribuation that I did my own.
After I was put to bed I used to practise being as still as possible and *listened very carefully* to all the evening noises. I also used to pinch myself to practise standing up to pain.
This was me exactly:
Since my father wasn't a JW, I always wondered if he would side with us.
Me too, if I was lying in bed and someone knocked at the door, I used to be terrified that if my dad answered the door and it was someone who had come to kill us he would betray me straight away. I *loved* my dad but he *was* worldly after all...
When I played with my dolls I used to play having to run for it during the Great Tribulation and having to hide in the woods or in a cave. I used to get my doll and pretend I was the mother and quickly pack clothes and toys and most importantly my Bible and go and "live" under my bed.
I used to practise hiding in small spaces around the house a lot.
When I was seven or eight we did the Revelation book for the first time. I was told - to my face, during the meeting - that one day They would force me to set fire to my mum and burn her to death.
Wonderful religion. -

Marmite is soooooooo lovely! I had it on toast just now.
I had vegemite once and it's different, it tasted waxy and it was thicker. It's horrible.
MARMITE RULES!!! -

Why does God let bad things happen?
by FMZ inthis question seems to be getting thrown around in the earthquake threads, and is asked a lot... so, what is your opinion on why god allows bad things to happen?
also, did you stop believing in god because he allows it?.
i will throw my two-penneth in when i have a little more time tonight.

He didn't make the tectonic plates, he didn't make magma... it all just happened. And why did he allow it to happen? Because in the long run, it really can't hurt us. "Fear not those who kill the body".
There is no "long run".
No-one who believes God created the Earth as in the Bible has explained the "shoddy workmanship" thing, I'm still really interested in a believer's reasoning. -

Can a creationist explain to me how they reconcile a belief in a perfect God with his creation of a flawed planet? The standard answer for disease and death is Adam and Eve's sin and free will - fair enough, I suppose in the context of the Bible, but the earth was formed before Adam and Eve even existed... why do earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and extreme weather events occur? Tectonic plates, magma and air pressure/temperature don't have free will and can't sin.

Fantasy doesn't matter either way. It doesn't matter how lovely it may be after death when people are suffering in their life. There's no proof of anything supernatural that happens after we're dead but there is proof of grief and pain.
We *know* that a terrible tragedy occurred yesterday, that's all that *matters*. Drinking water, medicine, blankets and shelter for those made homeless are all that matter - things that the dead don't need. :( -

23,000 people died because inhaling salt water makes the water in your blood draw through the walls of your lungs and your thicker and more concentrated blood puts strain on your heart and then you die of heart failure.
Not forgetting the people who are now going to die of water-borne disease: I'm sure they're looking forward to being with their loved ones in the after-life!
How truly it was a blessing!
Their terrifying and painful deaths did no good to them or anyone else. If there's good to come from death, why ever even try to save lives? -

I just think this thread was meant to inform people of a tragedy, and IMHO it would be a little less offensive if the discussion was started in another thread.
There are news agencies to inform people - and there are discussion boards to discuss things.
I'm just asking a question about (theologically) why "acts of God" occur. In a thread about an "act of God".
If it was in another thread on the same topic a question about the existence, or morality, of God could be just as "offensive".
It's not even a question of why bad things happen to good people; I'm just curious how believers feel about an Earth created with flaws, or if they think the flaws developed after the sin of Adam and Eve.
