The so-called Ubangi (this is a region) lived in the Congo. There used to be a picture of an Ubangi in the "Truth Book". It talked about the lips of the Ubangi. (I forgot why) But Samuel Herd talked about the hair of the Ubangi or rather the hair of the urban Blacks in the 60s wearing the Afro looking like Ubangis. Both men and women Ubangis went bald or near bald. Showing the apparant ingnorance of Mr. Herd. I was studying at the time and my younger brother was with me. First thing that came to my mind was "don't JW preach to Ubangi's also? What is wrong with a Ubangi" My brother on the other hand, after we got in the car began laughing and pointing his finger at a man walking down the street. He then called the man a Ubangi. I think my brother must have been around 13 or 14. I took him home and showed him the picture of the Ubangi. Then I asked him what kind of hair did the Ubangi have. Then I asked him did he think that Mr. Herd knew that or what was his point? And weren't these so called urban Ubangis potential JWs? What's up with that?

AlanF, the name of the man is Samuel Herd. He also used the term "nappy hair" in describing the fashion of a woman not wearing her hair straight. (Black women) at a circuit assembly. This was in the 90s in Chicago. The other incident was in the 70s in Los Angeles, Calif.

He has a daughter and he probably made sure her head was fried and burned until she left the house. But think of all the people he must hold in disgust just because of the way Jehovah made the pores in their scalp. Unbelievable!

I went to a racially mixed congregation in the Northern suburbs of Illinois. I found that things done in the congregation if done on a job would cause a person to get fired. (In fact I know a JW who was fired for sexual harrassment. I know he was purplexed seeing that he probably could quote a scripture about what he did.)

Anyway, I experienced gross insensitivity.

racial jokes repeated by White pioneers and thinking it was alright because a Black person (JW) told them the joke.
Elder using slang to newly membered Black children because he thought all Black urban children talked that way. The parent had to explain to him that the children did not understand him.
labeling the neighborhood as not only Jewish but negative slurs about the Jewish neighbors.
Calling a child the "N" word in anger by an elder's wife.
Coming into the bathroom and hearing that one mother of her iligitimate child speaking to another mother of her iligitimate child that she would not allow her child to marry the other (these are fairly new borns, ok?) because the child is too black.

Elder calling worldy people in the territory "Ubangis" (Circuit elder at the time is now on GB)

#'s 4-7 were done by Blacks and #4 was done to her own child. And yes, I called her on it. She thought I was out of line and focused on the child's wrong doing to justify her calling him this..."name".

Of course, there is more. But these stand out in my mind. In fact I had a son who #4's daughter liked. And I reminded him of the incident and asked him if he wanted her to call his child that? Of course, that ended the relationship. My son is happy and living with his wife and new son in Michigan. He was the first child who stood up and said he refused to go back to the KH. He did this in high school. I did not force him to return. The elders were angry at me for not allowing him to return. My husband, who was a JW could not interfere. He was not there in a spiritual way for his children. I took care of that and I was not the JW.

I am proud of my son. (He's a typical strong Leo)

Disfellowshipped? I got a question

Well, I just can't understand why JWs hate it or elders get angry when a DF person is NOT doing anything that is unscriptural. JWs need to start adhereing more to scriptures instead of adhereing to what the elders say.

That would just make my head spin. One day you listen to one elder, then to Paul, then to Barnabas. (I feel like Linda Blair) LOL

Anyway, I feel sorry for Truth2Me, if they are blackmailing you or anyone else when trying to return by asking you to do things that are unscriptural. THERE IS NOTHING THAT SAYS YOU ARE NOT TO SPEAK TO ANYONE!!

JWs stick closer to the Old Testament than the Pharisees did. I believe their concept is that of the way a leper was treated. And how a leper was not supposed to come near the congregation. (oops head spinning again)

What must Jehovah think of all this rigamarow??

Hi, pretty glad to get feedback on this one. Yes, I thought that the "law" was for JWs and not the ones who they are not supposed to speak to. I think its amazing that it seems to be implied that the disfellowshipped one comes under that curse. But, no, the cursed one is the person who responds to the disfellowshipped one. The person who is disfellowshipped has no law upon them.

So, imagine this. You are in the store, you approach a JW in line. She/he can't go anywhere because the store is crowded. You go up to them and commence to converse with them. Oh, you talk about life, school, the kids, other members of the KH. All the other people will think that person is really RUDE for not responding. Cool, huh?

Duane and Cherry sound familiar. I did not go to Zion long. Afterall, I'm just an Indian heathen. Is Duane kind of a little man? Cherry...(giggle)

Gumby, I know it sounded confusing but in reply to your answer, "The only JW that can talk to you are the Elders......if the deem it fit. They are supposed to talk with you at least once a year to......"see how your doing". If you are a known Apostate they are not to speak to you period. ", I was asking about a disfellowship person being allowed to talk to someone scripturally. And I just found out that what I thought was true. There is NO SCRIPTURE supporting a DF person to be silent....of course now if she happens to be a woman in the congregation she is to be silent DF or not. (just joking!)

When I was in association with WTB and my children were going to school, it was frowned on to participate in Black History. It was considered worldly. Strange, when it comes to historians, scientists, etc. It is rare that I read a quote from the WTB.

Rarer still for a comment about MLK Jr. Of those who suffered the most for the sake of "the people" of all races, Martin suffered the most. Malcolm had the most charisma. But I love them both...still.
