Say what? I don't have any history books in front of me right now but since when was Egypt ever considered of "minor importance"? Maybe as a personal opinion but in reality I'd have to say "I don't think so!" Egypt was always a key player.

Why didn't the Isrealites build pyramids, sphinxes, etc.? Too busy wandering the desert like bums and/or pissing off most every other tribe in that part of the world? Oh, give me a break!

See the JW, not the person

i've written before about my poor jw gilfriend and her health problems (i am not a jw).

she was in the hospital for an infection the last 3 days and, like usual, a few jws visited her.

(the hospital is conveniently located 5 blocks from their kh...) in speaking with her at times she would mention that "some ladies from my church came to visit" followed immediately by stating her lack of familiarity or even recognition of one or more of the ladies visiting.. she has had jws visit her in hospital and at home many times before.

I think I know what you mean. Im sure genuine friends of her's visit her, but I can imagine many would be going simply to show the nurses and other patients that JW's are a caring friendly people. IN all honesty, they are just there to eat the grapes...

Exactly. However, I also got to thinking about the ones who actually do know her and are "friends" in the JW way. At the hospital at least they can leave magazines in the waiting room and in the patient room. At home, it is a bit different.

When they visit, it usually is for all of 5 - 15 minutes. It involves magazines and/or reading that "Daily Text" that I guess she isn't smart enough to read on her own. It is a "visit" only in that they come to visit another person but it always -- ALWAYS -- is with an agenda. It's a sales call to someone who has already bought the product. And they can't count time I'm told nor count literature placement (but probably do...).

I really annoys me. I go visit in the sense of a visit. I go 3-5 days a week and stay for hours helping her, getting things she needs (water, etc.) and being company for her. All of a sudden, a swarm of dubs bursts in, turns on all the lights (it was right before her bedtime and she was winding down to sleep) and starts loud conversation. It really pisses me off when they do this. Other times it's just the burst-in, mag leaving, comment-making and then they are gone (which part doesn't bother me ). It is all so impersonal.

I've written before about my poor JW gilfriend and her health problems (I am not a JW). She was in the hospital for an infection the last 3 days and, like usual, a few JWs visited her. (The hospital is conveniently located 5 blocks from their KH...) In speaking with her at times she would mention that "some ladies from my church came to visit" followed immediately by stating her lack of familiarity or even recognition of one or more of the ladies visiting.

She has had JWs visit her in hospital and at home many times before. These visits are almost always accompanied by comments about a person or persons which my G/F doesn't know. I know the JWs seem to travel in "swarms" or packs but visiting a person you don't even know? OK, it's nice but ... There are some that she does know but the others are just tag-alongs.

Then it hit me: They don't visit the actual person they visit a JW. They go because it involves another of their own kind, not an individual. While they are always nice and friendly, it is so odd that they can keep this charade up so effortlessly. I guess they don't realize it themselves. (There's that cognitive vaccuum again. ) They don't care (or seemingly so) about her personally, they just care about an ailing JW -- another part of the collective! It truly is "The Borg" from Star Trek.

It has puzzled me that virtual strangers would go visit a stranger. They couldn't pick her out if she wasn't the one lying in the bed! Of course the strangers are usually in the company of others that know her but sometimes it is a person who doesn't know the person they are visiting nor she them.

Is this commonplace? Am I the one who is "off" here? Comments?

any one offhand know of any sect or cult that does not allow it's members to eat pork?

The Worldwide Church of God (WWCOG) might have also followed the Jewish dietary laws not eating port.

I have a friend who grew up in the WWCoG and then became a JW a few years ago (I guess she's just a natural, co-dependant follower). Her family are still WWCoG, however they are split because some of the WWCoG group had a big split back in the (I think?) 70's.

Her mother and father remained in the original group and her sister and her family went to one of the splinter groups. The sister won't eat pork and follows a lot of the old Jewish customs -- feast of tabernacles, days of unleavened bread and such (I think they want to be Jews... ). Her parents would eat pork although not a lot of it, so pork seems to be a divided issue as is some seafood.

The nice thing about it (seemingly different from JW families) is that they get along extremely well and other than observing different holy days and a couple of dietary exceptions their familial relationship is as solid as can be.

Watchtower Blotch of Alpha and Omega interpretation

now to cover a point of a different nature but one i feel very important, a point in which the society has deliberatly tried to gloss over in their manipulating of scripture.

we see in rev.

1:7,8 a mention of the alpha and omega, the one who is, who was, and who is to come.

At this point, we must pause a moment to consider the nature of angels. According to the Bible, angels are direct creations of God. They do not reproduce.

Maybe it's an atmospheric thing. In heaven (OK, just for the sake of discussion... ) angels can't reproduce but in our earth's atmosphere they can.

Or it's a gravitational thing. If they did the "horizontal mambo" in zero gravity they'd rocket up into wherever on the upstroke. In gravity, they'd stay in play. Problem solved! Their horniness was probably caused by watching humans get it on -- like watching a porno movie!

the conversation swung round to a documentary they'd been watching on video earlier that evening, supposedly putting forward all sorts of archaeological evidence for the exodus, including coral-encrusted remains of chariots at the bottom of the red sea, no less.

I can't help thinking that if all this was legit (esp the chariots) it'd be all over the news, but it's the first I've heard of it (seashells up mountains as proof of the Flood, anyone?).

Can't say as I've heard about the chariots (although I'd expect it to be bogus...) but the sea shells are fairly easily explained away by the upheaval of the earth due to plate tectonics. What was once sea bed or shoreline is pushed up over millions of years (like when mountains are formed) and presto! you have mountains with sea shells on top.

I'm sure other more learned folks can and will give you much more information but I know I've seen someone post a site that put some numbers to a lot of the Old Testament travels and when viewed from a logical perspective they are impossible to believe. The numbers are so huge that any mass transit of Israelites is suspect due to the sizes required plus there is no single piece or pieces of archaelogical evidence that supports any of those fairy tales.

Not sure I understood your question. Did you mean WHY JWs set the "beginning of the end times" to be in 1914?

No, I think I have a grasp of the why part, I was just unclear as to what the difference or contradiction or whatever was between the bible verses cited. Read my first post for a better explanation. Both verses are about the "end times" but I am still a bit puzzled by the question from my list of "9 Things to Ask a JW" and that's why I am considering changing it to "8 Questions..."
