What really strikes me is that not only would they do such a thing, but they would announce it to the entire Bethel family! They're a lot more discreet about their violations, nowadays.

Watchtower destroys historical evidence.
by Etude ini wonder if anyone else on this board can recall this incident.
i think i mentioned it in a previous post (on an unrelated subject) but can't find it.. when i was at brooklyn bethel (1974 on) i remember a comment that was made at the breakfast table (over the loud-speaker system) by someone recapping for the "family" the acquisition and remodel of the old towers hotel and the tunnel that was being constructed to connect that property with the rest of the complex.
it struck me even then (although as a good witness i quickly ignored it) how the speaker, with an air of disdain, proclaimed how they had found a shaft that apparently had been used for the "underground railroad", which smuggled slaves, had been promptly filled in with dirt and kept under wraps so that the brooklyn historical society could not stop the work.. has anyone else heard of this incident?.

God says not to go in service....
by riotgirlpeeps inso this morning since my parents are both very devout witnesses i get a knock at my door, i'm supposed to go with.
i'm in my pajamas.
typical guilt trip and mention that ultimately it is my choice, more guilt tripping (last time i checked i was 26 closing in on 27 ironic isn't it how they still don't want to allow decision making).

Corrupting historical facts
by Hellrider inat the university of oslo, norway, there is a professor, who is also a jw.
he does not even have a degree in history, he is a professor in semittic languages, still he has now published a book (in norwegian and english, and it`s going to be translated into lots of other languages also):.

Unlike Furuli (!!!), Jonsson is a respected and wellknown (now retired) professor of religious HISTORY! He is a HISTORIAN!Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you confusing Jonsson with Jim Penton? Dr. Penton taught history for many years at the University of Toronto. Jonsson, however, was not a professional academic.
Unlike Furuli, however, Jonsson wrote an accessible layman's summary of the existing research. He did not claim to be doing new research or challenging existing findings.
BTW, I'm not engaging scholar on this topic; he has been told all this many times before. I'm only posting this for the sake of Hellrider or others who may not know. You will find quite a bit on this topic in the archives.
(BTW, Hellrider, are you by any chance from the town of Hell?)

Hellrider... have you read Furuli's work? I haven't read his books, but judging from his 'net postings, I don't think there's a danger of anyone with any scholarly knowledge taking it for a serious work.

What to do??
by RichieRich inthink about this for a moment.. jws believe that their relentless work now will be rewarded with paradise later.. however, in an effort to get into paradise, many jws do nothing but work, and serve god.
i know my mother does.. so i wonder, what does she think she's going to do in paradise?
what is there that she likes, that will occupy her eternally??.

I agree with you, no human, no matter how deep and thoughtful, could live forever without gettng bored. The standard dub answer (millions of species of animals, plants, etc.) always feel flat for me, for two reasons: 1) what if you're not into zoology or botany? 2) even if there are billions and billions (as Carl Sagan would say) of things to explore, you'll still eventually run out, because billions is still an absolutely minuscule number compared to eternity. Then again, the human mind is finite, so you'd figure that after a while, we'd forget what we'd seen in the past. So eternal life would be kind of like perpetual alzheimer's--doing the same things over again every few billion years, because you'd forgotten that you'd done them before.
What's really sad, though, is that if you ask most Witnesses what they want to do in the New System, they'll say things like 'learn a musical instrument' or 'travel the world'--things they might be able to do right now if they would stop spending all their time on Watchtower BS!

Do they allow internet at bethel?
by freedom96 in.
.
just curious, with all the internet bashing, etc, if a bethelite wanted to have internet access in their room, would it be allowed.. if so, i wonder if they monitor the activity?

My last knowledge of this comes from Bethelite friends back in '02 or '03. At the time, Bethel had an intranet, which all the computers were connected to. However, this network was not connected to the Internet.
If you wanted to use the Internet, you had two options:
1. Use your own computer, in your own room, over a dial-up connection. A lot of the Bethelites had laptops.
2. Use a bank of dedicated Internet workstations, which were not connected to the regular internal network.
I don't know whether the Internet workstations were proxied and logged, but I would certainly expect them to be. Bethel didn't exercise any control over the Bethelites' own personal computers, however.

Minimus... Channel C was deliberately kept small by the admin, with registration by referral/approval only. The result was that it had some very high-quality posters, including Rud Persson, Carl Jonsson, and Jim Penton.
I haven't read it for a while, as I'm no longer interested in Christianity, but it's definitely sad to see it go. The discussions I had on there (even with one of the 'preachers') were very helpful in my exit journey. So I say, kudos to Ros for everything she's done.

CF is not a single disease. It is actually a very broad rubric that covers anyone with a given set of symptoms for whom there is not another clear diagnosis.
Personally, I've suffered from CF since I was a kid, and still do. Part of it--especially the worst symptoms, from the time I was about 10-16--has definitely been intermixed with depression. (Unfortunately, when I was referred to a psychiatrist as a child, my parents--and me too, under their influence--dismissed the idea.) But part of it is definitely physical as well. After a recent consultation with my doctor, I have an appointment scheduled with a specialist to see if the physical part of the fatigue might be related to sleep problems.
I think that CF, because the definition is so broad, actually covers a lot of ground--depression, hypochondria, as well as undiagnosed physical ailments. It's definitely not any one thing.
