I mis-entered the url and ended up with a search and was surprised to see that the top 10 sites that popped up were PRO JW. This was not the case when I was first searching--just a few months ago. I guess they have learned something about how to make the "apostates" appear "below the fold!"

Which way will the Society go because of the Internet?
by be wise ini've only learned the truth about this society over the last 5 months or so, so i'm not sure what the difference is to say - 2 years ago.
do you think the society will now get even more cultish in it's methods of teaching and more heavy handed if they feel things are slipping?
i don't feel i'm being over the top here because i've experienced very heavy handed talks at the assemblies and kingdom hall in the past that are just plain scare tactics but this just makes people ask more questions ??

Pagel's latest "Beyond Belief"
by Panda inelaine pagel's recent work beyond belief, the secret gospel of thomas gives some excellent examples of questioning what we have been taught and looking into all of the interesting historically "hidden" books of christianity.
i especially appreciated her explanations of why so many interesting writings never made it into the sanctioned bible.. what i got from this book was that power is/was the road to acceptance.
the leaders of the church who were accepted by the emperor (read that as constantine) got to manipulate the holy writings into their own form.

She is a wonderful writier, isn't she? The point that hit me between the eyes was that there came a point where a choice had to be made--institution or no institution? The writings which pointed people toward discovering and developing the Jesus within them (very poor paraphrase) had to be stamped out because no church could be built on that kind of personal spirituality. For a religion, you need an us against them, a saved and unsaved. So "love God, yourself, and all other people" as a philosophy was just too simple and way too broad to support a religion. I expect that Ireneaus believed he was protecting God just as the governing body does. I, too, heartily recommend "Beyond Belief."

Argh! What to do, what to do...
by safe4kids inmy children have a friend who lives in the neighborhood and who comes over often to hang out.
he is a little jw boy, but he and his mom have no idea that i'm an ex.
"gabe" has been a frequent visitor to our home for over a year now and nothing about religion has ever come up...until today.. he and my son got into a discussion about evolution vs. creation, and, as the conversation seemed to be heating up, i got involved.

Hmmmm. I doubt the kids will be gentler, especially if he refutes logic with JW "logic." I don't know if this is helpful or not, but my kid was friends with the son of a Westminster Pres. family (father ex-police, studying to be minister). And I heard them getting into it and my kid practically had the other in tears because he knew how to ask the questions and point up the contradictions, etc. Later I just talked to my kid about what it might be like to be growing up in that kind of very strict, dogmatic family and community and how frightening it must be for him to deal with doubts and contradictions, etc. I pointed out that by "defeating" my kid, Rob could "defeat" his doubts. Anyhow, it did seem my kid stopped baiting him until they were a lot older and I figured Rob was on his own!

Are They Losing the Old, Too?
by metatron ini was quite surprized when a relative of mine needed a ride to the district assembly and couldn't find one.. what surprized me was two older sisters, who have been utterly faithful over the years, separately said they aren't going.. we already know the watchtower is losing witness kids enmasse but this looks unusual.
what's left for old-timers anyway?
all the urgent depth of doctrine is gone - the society can't defend anything.

You know, as soon as I posted that I thought "oh, for Pete's sake, you'd probably just be setting yourself up to be abused by OLD JWs, who have nothing better to do." So I'm sorry. That was probably fatuous of me. But it still makes me sad that these people dodder off in the sunset lost and alone precisely because they were faithful all their lives to an organization that values only itself.

Just HAD TO SHARE
by unique1 inin a reply to me concerning my mothers prompting for us to join her at the assembly next sunday and then go to dinner with them, my husband confessed dinner and a good brainwashing were his idea of a good time followed by the next little paragraph that was so inspired, and sarchastic, i had to share.. by 'brainwashing', of course, i mean heart warming stories of.
inspiration, an amazing watchtower summary (how can they so completely.
cover such an intense biblical lesson in only half the time it normally.

This makes me, who has never been a JW, incredibly sad. I wish this could be an xjw project--to go visit and comfort the elderly JWs who have been abandoned by the org. Not to convert, just to visit, bring a meal, listen to memories.

WTS Addresses Child Abuse - er, kind of...
by iiz2cool inmy wife, who is intent on re-activating herself as a dub since i da'd myself, went to the convention this past weekend.
she showed me this new publication entitled "learn from the great teacher", and placed great emphasis on these two pages i scanned and am posting.
it makes a poor show of telling children what to do when confronted by a child abuser.

How many have multiple degrees on this forum?
by logansrun insometimes i think life was so much easier under the feudel system..... .
well, i'm still deciding on a career.
have i made much progress since my thread about teaching a few months ago?

If it is at all possible to pursue a graduate degree to get the credential's you are interested in rather than another AA or BA I'd strongly recommend it. Have you worked with the career services office at your university? They often have a lot of info and a network that can help you sort all this stuff through. Best wishes!

All depression sufferers (past/present) please read
by WildHorses ini went to my dr. today because my blood pressure was really high.
156/106 and my meds weren't helping to lower it.
can you get over depression without meds?

Nobody should keep taking meds that don't work! You should feel some improvement within a couple of weeks. If Zoloft doesn't work, there are lots of others, and trying them one after another until you hit the right one is worth the effort! All of the sudden you are you again. Except a happier and more engaged version of you! And then you have the energy to do what you need to do to not need the meds any more. But don't just accept one thing and figure if it doesn't work nothing will!
