After my dad died, my mother was pondering whether he'd wait for her or if he'd hook up with one of his girlfriends from before they got married. I told her she was thinking too much. But it is the problem of thinking of the next life as a continuation of this one, isn't it. ¶Why is it that people think they understand the mind of God when it comes to hating gays or not dancing or whatever but are sure they can't conceive the mind of God when it comes to the afterlife?

Apostate organizations, will they take down the religion?
by spiritwalker inone of the main themes i have noticed to former jehovah?s witnesses boards, is the mentioning of apostate jehovah?s witness organizations and publications.
while i realize the reason behind these organizations, i also see them as far less powerful then many would like to think.
not that their efforts are wasted, as i know many take a lot of passion and time to their work.

The point that spiritwalker makes that intrigues me is that non-JWs already view JWs as cultists and therefore already anticipate "cultist" problems. So shocking revelations are hardly shocking. I'd never thought of that before and I think it is a very good point. The Watchtower teaches that the world sees Jehovah's Witnesses as clean and pure and all that. But the world just see's Jehovah's Witnesses as, at best, a little odd, and at worst, a high-control cult.

Massachusetts backs gay marriage
by ignored_one inhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3281017.stm
massachusetts backs gay marriage the us state of massachusetts has ruled in favour of gay marriage.
the state's supreme judicial court ruled that that barring same-sex couples from the benefits of civil marriage was "unconstitutional.

The state supreme court of Massachusetts did not "back gay marriage." It ruled that barring same-sex couples from the benefits of civil marriage was "unconstitutional." In other words, it says "change the constitution or change barring same-sex couples from the benefits of civil marriage. I must confess I was a little taken aback by the tone of that article--including the quotes around unconstitutional. What's that about? At any rate, I will keep my fingers crossed that this is a step forward and not just a rallying point for the many who think same-sex couples should be second-class couples. I'm happy about the ruling but I'm not looking forward to the ramping up of what I consider hate speech.

WT lawyers
by bebu inplease help me understand something about wts lawyers.. are they hired by the wts, or are the lawyers expected to volunteer?
this question was not answered to my satisfaction on an earlier thread, because i know that most dubs weren't going to college for the longest time, and then how many of them would go on to law school?
how many of these would be crackerjack lawyers?
-
kgfreeperson
Yes, but isn't bebu's question about how these lawyers are compensated?

Would You Like It If The Elders Called You To See How You're Doing?
by minimus ini read how some seem to complain that the elders never visited or even made 1 call to see how they were doing.
would you really want the elders visiting and calling you at this point in time?

That's a really interesting question from the perspective of an elder, also! How do elder's feel about calling on people whose pattern of attendance has change or who have given other indication that something is up? The impression I've gotten is that elder's only call or call on someone when they're trying to get them off the books. Is that right? When you were an elder, did you tend to let people go their own way or did you feel an obligation to "shepherd." Did you genuinely care about the flock or were you only focused on the "cleanliness" of the congregation as a whole?

Organized Dub Rave Parties...Easy sex optional!
by yxl1 inmy wife had a long drive home from north yorkshire with her younger brother (who is a dub) last night.
she was asking him questions about his social life and was very surprised at his response.
apparently, each week in london some brothers organize raves in various hired nightclubs.

Why the terror about JWs gathered in groups of any size for any social purpose? I mean, I know it's about control, but what's the "scriptural basis?"

The BOrg will adjust the 2034 date with this "new light"
by skiz ini don't know if anybody else has brought this point up yet on these different 2034 threads but ...
their watchtower article that linked armageddon with the flood, said that the flood came 120 years after judgment was passed

Gerard, that cartoon illustrates that painting yourself into a corner isn't exactly fatal, doesn't it? That poor goon just waited for the paint to dry, filled in the corner, then painted over his footsteps as he backed out. And here we are! 1914? What 1914?
