I thought you said you were reading The Blind Watchmaker
I have barely started to read it...
i know this is one huge rant, but i want to put my own questions and doubts in writing.. i am a fading jw who has become agnostic... i still believe in "god" and "jesus," but i simply cannot explain to people why i believe in them.
i just do.. about the existence of god: it is an infinite regress.
"all things were created by someone"... well... who created god?

Do you think the Lenski experiment will have some other evolution in the next twenty years? Is there anything that can be done to "speed it up"? Or would that violate the "rules of the game" in that it wouldn't be "natural selection"?
Also, are there different rates of evolution? Is there something that can accelerate it?
The last I read about evolution (Biology class in High School), there was an "explosion" of new species at a certain point in time... what would explain that? Is evolution a linear process?

it seems most of the us growth is in spanish-speaking territory, and of course, there is growth in the nations where spanish is the predominant language.
most sites oriented around ttatt, are english-speaking.
there seems then to be a great need for translators...for instance, imagine if there was a spanish version of www.jwfacts.com.. unfortunately, i dont speak this language.
Hecce: Not to bust your bubble but www.extj.com is just too small compared to JWN.
Only 15,000 threads, 284,034 posts...
I don't have any stats on JWN but assuming 20 threads per page, and 11,000 pages of threads, that amounts to 220,000 threads, and assuming an average of 15 posts per thread, that amounts to over 3.3M posts...
Now compare the JW stats:
Spanish-speaking JW's: Latin America: Approx. 2.5M Spanish-speaking JW's. (2013 Americas total: 3.9M, minus 700K in USA, 100K in Canada, and 600K in Brazil, assuming all the rest speak Spanish). I don't have the stats for Spain, but let's add 100K. That means that out of 7M JW's in the world, 2.6M, or 37% of the entire amount of JW's in the world, speak Spanish.
Native English-speaking JW's: We will assume that the following ratios apply: US (70%), Canada (85%), South Africa (30%), and the following at 100%: U.K., Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Jamaica. (rounded figures)
This gives us with 840K + 100K + 30K + 145K + 65K + 30K + 15K + 15K = 1.24M
(It's a complicated subject, especially if I consider non-native English speakers... therefore I am just counting "native" English speakers).
So the Spanish JW population is more than double the size of the English JW population, and yet their exJW population is 1/12th the size of the English-speaking one.
Chance for growth??? YOU BET!!

Correct me if wrong, but E.Coli now being able to consume citrate would qualify as a different "species" of E.Coli.
This is what I thought interesting, from the Wikipedia article:
"Wild-type E. colicannot grow on citrate when oxygen is present due to the inability during aerobic metabolism to produce an appropriate transporter protein that can bring citrate into the cell, where it could be metabolized via the citric acid cycle. The consequent lack of growth on citrate under oxic conditions, referred to as a Cit - phenotype, is considered a defining characteristic of the species that has been a valuable means of differentiating E. coli from pathogenic Salmonella."
Hi Adamah, or anyone, can you please provide as many possible "missing links" and when they were found?
Thanks!!

Losingit: I edited my post... I meant to say that, if you look at the effective exJW websites, you can see that illuminati/conspiracy theory websites aren't too effective...
There NEEDS to be an examination of the BITE model and there NEEDS to be a support network...

I mean that, as far as I have seen, there are very few Latin-American exJW websites, and the ones that do exist are still stuck in the "subliminal images/conspiracy theories/Mason/Illuminati" sort of websites. There are some that are better but still too "Christian preachy"...
In my very humble opinion, a great website should give facts, not theories, should be accurate, should not have bias towards a particular religion, should also include psychological help for those leaving the WT. I have yet to see a website like that that comes from a Latin American writer.
So yes, we (because I am Latino myself) are way behind compared to the English-speaking or the Spaniard (from Spain) exJW community.

i need help with writing an article regarding vaccinations, organ transplants, and blood transfusions.. i am doing my research using limited amounts of non-wt sources and mostly just the actual wt literature.. what i am having a hard time understanding is:.
most of the articles in the golden age, at least at the beginning of the anti-vaccination stance, are actually written by contributors.
since there are very pro-vaccination articles and then lots of anti-vaccination articles, how can i determine the actual wt viewpoint on vaccinations?.
I need to apologize to Paul (jwfacts)... I just wanted proof that if it was included in the Golden Age, it was endorsed. I have not really found a direct proof of this, but I have indirect ones (the last one might be called a direct one, imho):
1. Christmas was abolished for JW's using an article that appeared in the Golden Age. They mentioned the author's name, but that didn't mean that it was taken as the personal opinion of the author, it was made binding on all Bible Students / JW's...
2. The amount of negative viewpoints towards vaccinations far exceeds the number of positive ones. We are talking around 85% negative vs 15% positive... the positive ones were only at the beginning of the articles, but after 1925, all of the articles that dealt with vaccination were negative.
3. The very first article of the Golden Age, the introductory one, explained that the magazine was "backed by some of the best and ablest men in the world and shall be maintained as an educational medium for the purpose of explaining the true relationship between science, agriculture, labor and pure religion" (Golden Age, October 1st, 1919, p.3)
it seems most of the us growth is in spanish-speaking territory, and of course, there is growth in the nations where spanish is the predominant language.
most sites oriented around ttatt, are english-speaking.
there seems then to be a great need for translators...for instance, imagine if there was a spanish version of www.jwfacts.com.. unfortunately, i dont speak this language.
I'm in for moderating a Spanish version of JWN... Simon, you would have to teach me all your acquired moderating wisdom.
Also,
I totally ditto what hijosdelawatch said... Spain is definitely the #1 Spanish-speaking exJW source. Latin Americans are behind when it comes to actually coming out of the JW's. Also, there are GREAT Spanish resources, but they are all scattered. In some cases it is very bad: If you look up "Testigos de Jehová vacunas" (Jehovah's Witnesses Vaccines) on Google, the first website is a JW apologist website!!
There are differences in the Spanish-speaking world that have to be accounted for. For those who speak Spanish, an amazingly funny but true video showing the differences in many countries of ONE word, "chucho", will demonstrate how hard it is to translate to a neutral Spanish (the video itself is translated to English):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LjDe4sLER0
The Spaniards are obviously much richer and they're in a much more secular culture (Europe) than Latin America. This makes it easier for them to come out of the JW's. I would say second country is Chile, third Argentina, and then in the other countries it is almost unthinkable to leave JW's. Mexico is the fastest-growing JW country: There are 600 thousand of them in Mexico, and in certain areas the entire town, except for one or two families, is a JW.
Like always, there is a direct relationship between poverty of a country and the growth of JW's... (more poverty = more growth)
I am having great success with my page on Facebook, many people LOVE the Photodrama, ignoring all mistakes and errors in it. But I am sure a lot of them also have doubts and are uneasy with my page.
