Hey, all...since the DUMBO residents expressly said they don't want a "fortress" as the heart of their community, maybe someone (who knows the specifics better than I do) should point out that Bethel went into lockdown on 9/11 to keep 'worldy' people out of their buildings......people in NY should react pretty strongly to that...as they have a right to. I'd hate to have a JW stronghold close to my home

DUMBO area in Brooklyn says "No!" to watchtower development
by Dogpatch inread the whole article at: http://www.nypost.com/business/13351.htm.
december 14, 2003 -- another real estate turf war is cooking in brooklyn.
this one squares off dumbo dwellers against jehovah's witnesses, whose plans to build a massive housing complex has the trendy neighborhood residents from down under the manhattan bridge overpass fuming.

Good point, Euph. In our old cong there were almost no new converts (and only a few kids baptised) the whole time we were there. We thought it was just our territory...you always heard stories about people in other congs who had studies and made converts...
Guess that happening is an excellent reason that field service is only hours...like you said, what does it matter what you do when no one wants to listen anyway.
(still think that letter writing thing was a stretch, as is counting hours on the net!)

Thanks Blondie!!
OK...who here remembers the first time they saw a commercial for shampoo in plastic bottles! (that oughta weed out the kiddies) I remember the commercial had the shampoo falling off the counter in slooooooow motion (as the audience gasped...we'd all broken bottles like that!), and then hitting the floor....and bouncing! It made quite an impression! I'm sure most of the US promptly went out and bought stuff in the 'new' plastic bottles...
I remember mom putting a glass Pepsi bottle (what was that size right before 2 liters? 2 quarts?) in the trash compactor (which, of course, we all called the 'trash masher'). When the compactor compacted, that bottle exploded, and shards of glass flew out of the compactor. Mom has always had carpet in her kitchen and let me tell you it was a b*tch to clean up! The trash masher sounded like such a good idea but we had a terrible time getting the bags out - and they were heavy!!

Bonanza - with Adam Cartwright - before he left the series. Hoss, Little Joe and Big Daddy Cartwright. Every time they got interested in gals... the gals got killed. Hmmm... I think that any gal with sense would hi-tail it outta there if she got wind of their 'track record' with wimmen.
OOO! OOO! OOO!
One of my favorite Christmas *records* (LP vinyl) when I was a kid was (something like) "Christmas on the Ponderosa"...mom still has it...I'd love to get a CD (don't have a record player any more). I don't know if it was from an episode of the series or they just made the record...but it was GREAT!!!

Remember Flipper? And Gentle Ben?
Yes! Yes!!
We always watched Disney and Wild Kingdom (along with every other nature program) but thank God only watched LW a couple of times when dad's parents were visiting. What show was it...Carol Burnett or something, that had a Halloween show where the monsters were singing "consider yourself at home"??
We got about 3 stations really well but when my uncle put in a TV tower he could get PBS from Topeka!

THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE!
by natalienu ini mentioned it to some family and friends last night on my intentions and what this guy really is and they all hit the roof.
the only thing i am so annoyed about is the false feelings these idiots obviously put out to get new suckers into their clan.
they have totally lost the believer in me and anyone that puts the atchtower before love has to get their head read, or kicked in as i would like to do now.

Nat,
Sorry if we "slammed" you with all kinds of negative stuff, but most of us remember how we swallowed that very same crap, a little at a time, and rationalized that the WT must be the truth and couldn't be the bad guys. And how awful it was when we finally let ourselves realize we'd given our lives over to a very sick organization.
We just wanted to save you that. Seeing all the negative stuff in a pile at once usually keeps people from being sucked in.
Live well without "Mr. Not-so-wonderful"!

So this is Christmas, what were you told by family, elders & Kingdom Hall
by run dont walk inso it is christmas, hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm, most of us (not all) grew up in the borg never knowing or doing things at christmas, looking back now, what were some of the bs reasons, your parents, elders, kingdom hall talks, or watchtower told you about not celebrating christmas ....................

My JW relatives were tightwads and were happy not to have to get anyone gifts at any time.
I knew LOTS of JWs like that. You could just feel their smugness, and their relief at not having to go to any effort for anyone else. Not just at Christmas, but birthdays, Mother's day...I was always hearing stuff like, "I'm so glad I don't have to mess with that." As if going to some effort for others was just beneath them. Buying a present, or a card, or baking a cake. That was just wasted effort, because they just couldn't imagine enjoying doing something to make someone else happy.
You know, I wonder if they have a warped sense of that. I mean, they're told they should have "joy" in "serving Jehovah", going to assemblies, meetings, etc, and most of them don't really. They're told that the rest of the world should be grateful that they come to their door with their message, and we know they're not. Maybe the fact that every time the WT tells them they should enjoy something, it's drugery at best...maybe it doesn't occur to them how much they could enjoy celebrating something?? Maybe it's just the fact that the WT sucks the fun out of everything that they think holidays or birthdays wouldn't be fun either??

Are these PETA people nuts?
by Thunder Rider inthe link below is to the peta sight and a page aimed at kids.
i heard about it on the radio yesterday, but didn't believe it to be true.
i'm all for treating animals humanely but if this is what happens to your judgement when you cut all meat out of your diet, then i'mgoing out for a burger.

Yes I think the PETA people are nuts, but not because of their complaining that animals raised for food often have horrible lives (and deaths). They do.
I grew up in farm country and hubby and I farmed the first 10 years we were married. "Factory farming" can be pretty awful. And I won't even get started on "packing plants" (slaughterhouses). I've taken cows, pigs and turkeys to them. Funny how most people will get outraged at how dogs and cats are treated in puppy and kitten mills, but not how farm animals kept in the same type of way... (don't get me wrong, puppy and kitten mills should be put out of business)
I'm not a vegetarian and I'm not opposed to eating meat (I think it's perfectly natural), I just wish I could afford to buy meat that had been humanely raised and killed. I'd buy kosher (which is at least more humanely killed) but I just can't afford it. I wear and use leather and I'd wear fur if I lived way up where it got really cold and the animals were humanely trapped (which they're often not). I'm still conflicted about lab animals...some testing is obviously valuable to humans, but I don't need makeup bad enough for animals to be tortured over it.
The thing is, PETA is not about vegetarianism or about humane treatment of animals. The thing that gets me is that they don't believe people should even own pets. They don't think anyone should be able to "own" an animal, they think it's morally wrong.
I find it really frustrating to want to work toward the humane treatment of animals (animal welfare) without getting tangled up with PETA's "humans have no right to 'use' animals" (animal rights) politics. It's almost impossible.

Thinking of becoming a JW - Need urgent honest advice!!!
by natalienu ini have met a wonderful man but unfortunately he is a jw.
i have never been interested or really ever been around any religion in my life so all of this right now is very fascinating to me.
i have been thinking of studying to become one but am also having a hard time finding anything on the net that is positive about it.

Oh, and before I forget...are you aware of the JW rules for the husband and wife relationship? That the men make the decisions and the women have to live with it? That abused wives have been "counseled" by the elders and even threatened with disfellowshipping for wanting to leave husbands that beat the crap out of them? That if he's beating you and or the kids the standard advice is "pray more, be more submissive, be a better wife and don't give him reason to beat you"?? And, of course, calling the cops is a no-no because that might "bring reproach on the congregation"...
That the man is referred to as the woman's husbandly owner??? (no I am not kidding, they are dead serious about this)
You should think very seriously about getting into a relationship with a man who has been raised with this mentality. Not all JW men are abusive bastards but I certainly wouldn't take that chance.

JWs just L-o-o-ve to study with people like you...very vague ideas about religion = very easy to convince (usually)
Can anyone honestly tell me if I am just better off staying as I am.
YES!
So , if fascinated by it because of this man, is it a good idea to start studying and get baptised next year?
NO!!
Seriously, do some research on the harm this organization has caused. How much experience in general do you have, relationship-wise?
Read some of the threads on this board from "worldly" girls who were steamrolled by JW guys.
Are you aware of the controversy over the covering up of child sexual abuse in congregations throughout the world? That victims were disfellowshipped if they didn't keep quiet (to avoid making JWs look bad)?
If you had children, would you let one of them die rather than get a blood transfusion?
Are you willing to let this organization dictate every detail, and I mean every detail of your personal relationship (what kind of sexual position is acceptable and when married persons should or shouldn't have sex), your marriage, your job, what kind of car you drive, how you spend your money, your whole life? That the elders in the congregation to which you are assigned will feel it is their perfect right to inquire about these things and pass judgement on them, and be obeyed?
Are you aware that a "proper" JW will, whenever confronted with any decision from, "what kind of job should I have" to "should my children attend college", will not think for him- or her-self but rather look up an answer in the many many volumes of stuff this organization has published?
I could go on for ages...just keep reading stuff and talking to people...make sure if you decide to study and join (are you sure he'd follow through even if you did get baptised? that can be frowned on...marrying someone who joined just to get married to you) that you know what you're getting into!
And, romantic notions of love aside, why would you turn your life over to some guy anyway...why isnt' he leaving the religion to be with you if you're so in love?? Big red flag!
