Writing letters is bad enough (and the society encourages it!), but I swear I remember an article (late 80's? early 90's?) saying what a "wonderful opportunity" it was, basically, to hang out in graveyards (as dad would say, "I shit you not"). The graveyard thing might have been for a specific holiday like memorial day or Dia de los Muertos, where lots of people visit graves, but I think I remember it pointing out that in general people were in a mood to talk when visiting their relative's graves. I guess that answers the question, how low can they go?? I've always thought the only reason Prince became a JW was because somebody took unfair advantage of him when his baby died.

Public debate on how the forum is run
by Simon injust a reminder / clarification.. i'm not interested in public debate or questioning about hwo the forum is run, especially individual decisions we make.. if you have any questions about anything or want to challenge any decision then do it via email or pm.
any posts like this made on the main board will be deleted and, if continued, will result in suspension of the account used (as happened with minimus who's account has now been reactivated).
i'm sure you will appreciate the reason for this.

Surprises in the family tree
by Maverick ini was always lead to believe my family came to america from canada in 1926. both my mothers and my fathers families are of french decent.
it turns out only my mothers side came from there.
my father, who i only know casually, (parents were divorced when i was three and mom remarried when i was five), sent me a history of his side of the family.. turns out his side has been here since at least 1775, (new england)!

All of this came as a bit of a shock to me. I had no idea of any of this. It is kind of sad in a way to suddenly find out things like this about your families past!
I know just what you mean. My family never talked much about our 'ancestors'...great-great grandma was about as far back as the stories went, and they never gave any indication that we'd been anything but dirt-poor farmers who came over with the faceless mass of immigrants sometime in the 19th century...no "family history" like some people had.
Imagine my surprise to get ahold of documents from people who were doing geneologies on both my paternal and maternal families, to find out that on one side, "Capt. James Farley" came to the U.S. with his wife and son in 1625 (1625?!? You've gotta be kidding me!), and on the other, an ancestor named "Barefoot Benson" had been a scout and minor hero (good for a mention in some history text) of the Revolutionary War. Coulda knocked me over with a feather. Kind of sad, though, that we had all this history that we didn't know anything about. Part of me still doesn't believe it. (The other, naughtier part of me enjoys referring to my husband, whose great-great-grandparents came to the U.S. from Germany and Switzerland, as a wetback )

Cute
Hey, I think that first pic of a watchtower might be from the Grand Canyon! Sure looks like it, although the picture quality isn't good enough to tell for sure.

JW literature table on campus
by asleif_dufansdottir inas i've mentioned before - most weekday mornings the jws have a table set up by the fountain on campus at asu.
i never see anybody talking to them.
mostly they have just been sitting there with all the literature on display, talking to each other.. however, the last few days i've noticed something strange.

Another survey from Lee
by Lady Lee inreading simon's post about how things used to be i started thinking about how the internet has changed things.
many believe the internet and the freedom of information it contains will be the undoing of the wts.. when i was a jw, there were a few dfings but maybe one a year or even less.
people drifted away but we really didn't pay a lot of attention unless it was a close friend.. in here we see new people coming in all the time.

- What year did you leave?
1992 was when we stopped going regularly...took a couple of years to consider ourselves "out forever"
- How old were you when you left?
29 & 30
- Did the internet have anything to do with your decision to leave?
no
- If you left before you got on the internet what reading did you do about the WTS or cults that helped you make your decision?
none. The crap that was allowed to go on in the congregation proved to us that the society wasn't what it claimed to be. I was so frustrated that things weren't taken care of the way they were supposed to be that I knew something was up. There is no substitute for personal experience!
- What was the one most important reason that helped you decide to leave (even if the decision was made for you through a DFing).
When we quit going to meetings, we were relieved! We'd seen and bitched about the flaws (which we thought were just weaknesses in our particular congregation), but it evolved from relief that we didn't have to go to a particular meeting, to resistance about going to any, to finally admitting to each other that it was a load of crap and certain people (power hungry small minded bullies) could just kiss our @$$.
- If you left and still thought it was "the truth" what helped you change your mind?
Once I got my mind completely back, started thinkin for myself, and wasn't afraid to question or consider the possibility that they weren't who they claimed to be, I just reasoned it out for myself.

As I've mentioned before - most weekday mornings the JWs have a table set up by the fountain on campus at ASU. I never see anybody talking to them. Mostly they have just been sitting there with all the literature on display, talking to each other.
However, the last few days I've noticed something strange. They're not sitting behind the table anymore. They're sitting or standing several feet away, watching it.
One older brother was there by himself today, and instead of sitting at the table, he was standing on the steps, watching the table like a hawk. I guess they've come to the conclusion that people won't come get literature for fear of having to talk to them, so they're trying this? It just seems weird. Something's strange about the way they watch the table so closely even though they're not sitting at it (kinda creepy, it's hard to explain, like they're waiting to pounce but trying not to act like it). It's kind of like they're trying to act 'casual and informal' and failing miserably.
I guess the other explaination is that they're not wanting to be associated with the literature. "What? No, that's not my stuff, I was just watching it for somebody" (OK, probably not)
Anybody ever do this type of field service? Sure looks like 'cake' to me! 70 hours a month of sitting out in the sunshine and fresh air, not having to actually talk to anybody...

If You Found A Wallet----Would You Turn It In??
by minimus inwould you have to think about it??
?
-
asleif_dufansdottir
I've found a couple of wallets. Turned them in. Last time there was money (a tidy sum) in it, and I called the owners and told them (she'd left it outside in the dark in a shopping cart) I'd found it, how much case there was in it, and that I was leaving it with the checkout kid. And told the kid I'd already called the owners.

Academic publications involving JWs
by asleif_dufansdottir inin trying to explain to someone on another site how to do an academic publication search, i came across the following related to jws.
thought y'all might be interested:.
note: ti is title (of book, article), ab is abstract (short description of article).

asleif_dufansdottir
Please do!
It would be so cool to have an exhaustive, comprehensive list of academic publications (of all disciplines) involving JWs...of course, a message board is not the ideal place to keep a list. Does anybody know if some of the long-time stable XJW sites try to keep one?
Edited because I forgot to say
Wow! How cool is that! Congratulations on the pub. I'm doing my first big poster presentation this month and I know how important it is...
