Frequent application of soap and water is much more important than the after-shave or cologne. Trust me on this one. I'd much rather just smell "nice, clean, guy" than any cologne or after-shave.

Please let's don't be encouraging them to put on cologne.

Do you remember when "Polo" was really popular? The cologne smelled great, but my women friends and I always said the less attractive a guy was, the more Polo he wore. When a really ugly guy walked into a room, the Polo would hit you like a sledge hammer from a dozen feet away. One of my brother's friends must have gone through a bottle a month. I think it burned his olfactory nerves out and he couldn't smell it any more. So he kept putting more on.

I always wondered, what was the point? Are they trying make it difficult to get close enough to get a good look at them? Eventually, the smell of Polo turned us off because we associated it with ugly guys who thought they were making themselves more attractive by the application of Polo.

As a grad student, I only take classes in my field, but I will say that the current bane of my existence is my Cultural and Political Ecology class...Several hundreds of pages of reading per week!

How long has man been on earth - an epiphany of sorts

i am a believer, but have struggled with some bible subjects.

the one that has caused me the most questions, and for the longest time (even as a jw) is the geneology of jesus found in the first 17 verses of matthew.. on the one hand there is an incredible amount of scientific evidence supporting man's existence here on earth for well past 6,000 years.

i did a thesis paper in archeology on dating techniques so i am familiar with these techniques and i believe they are credible.. i could toss this section of matthew aside as some sort of mistake except for another type of evidence - the mathmatical codes contained in these verses.

but a couple just leaving didnt know this- & they have been jws since 1944.. does differant countries have differant df rules.

There's a good reason that you never (at least in your and my case) have heard of anyone being df'd for joining the YMCA. And I think it's for the same reason that you almost never hear of anyone being df'd for celebrating birthdays, Christmas or whatever other dingbat rule the WT comes up with...

...if you do it, and you're unrepentant, chances are almost 100% that you're on your way out of the WT anyway.

No baptised JW could possibly be ignorant of the fact that birthdays and Christmas are forbidden, or what would happen to them if they got caught celebrating. Therefore, no 'good' JW would do it.

How many "good" JWs would ever join the YMCA? If they did it would be through ignorance. And, once it was pointed out to them, what would be the reaction? "Oh, my goodness, brother! I had no idea! I'll quit right away!" Thus, for a 'good' JW who breaks the rule, no reason to be df'd (unless somebody was gunning for them).

You'd only be df'd if you joined and then refused to quit when you were counseled. And who would do that? Only those who were fed up anyway, or those who had left anyway and this was the excuse drummed up to df them.

What kind of stuff do people (real, active JWs, as opposed to those who walked away already anyway) get df'd for the most? Sex and smoking, if I recall correctly. Stuff that people often feel compelled to do even if they 'know' it's wrong.

Speaking of sexy shows for us gals, who here has seen "Bliss"? I think it's from Canada and I haven't got a chance to watch it yet (I don't get Oxygen network ), but I did get a clip of Peter Wingfield's (the guy who played Methos on Highlander) sex scene on it from the episode entitled "Tying Up Gerald."

Ladies, the man is (surprisingly) hot. (damned red letters) From that scene alone I'd recommend the series!!
