I figured it was yet another thread to post that picture of a woman afraid to touch a door knocker of a naked man with huge testicles...It was funny the first thousand or so times I saw it posted (That's probably unfair to those who post it who haven't seen it the thousand times)

MAJOR AP ARTICLE ON JWs CHILD ABUSE ISSUE GOES NATIONWIDE IN USA

Looks like there will be no new light coming down the pike regarding the two witness rule, not as long as the hardliners are in power.
I think it's more due to the WT's lawyers than 'old school' hardline GB members.
If they admit that the 2 witness rule is faulty, that opens them up to lawsuits with those whose abuse was covered up under that rule. Basic rule of corporate legality (or, for that matter, anyone who's ever been in a car accident): Never Admit You're at Fault. Even (especially! in the case of corporations) if you are guilty. I don't think it's terribly unusual for corporations to refuse to change policies they know are wrong, for the sole reason that if they changed they could be sued for admiting there was something wrong with the old policy, hence admitting liability.
Screwy, but the way the corporate and legal system works.

This article was discussed on the JW debate board on Beliefnet as well. The active JWs there expressed a lot of skepticism about this line in the article:
Their opponents are motivated by what some say is a problem comparable with, or even worse than, the scale of abuse by Catholic clergy.
Here is my response to them (I hope it's OK to add here?).
There is one key point on the question of how widespread abuse is in the JWs vs. the Catholics that most people don't see.
The problem in the Catholic church is abuse by priests...and the church is being required to take responsibility for inaction and even shielding and moving pedophile priests. Abuse by individual parishoners who happen to be Catholic is not being laid at the doorstep of the church, just that done by priests. As far as I know, it has not been claimed that the church tried to cover up abuse by all Catholics and tried to keep victims from going to authorities...just in the case of priests.
The problem in the JWs is not just with a clergy class. No activists are claiming that only elders or MS are the abusers. The problem is that the "corporate climate" of the WT has made it possible for individual JWs, not clergy to avoid being charged both by JW judicial committees and the secular court system. As a matter of fact, in many cases the abuse could have been proved by rape kits and DNA testing by the secular courts, and could have been used by judicial committees. Unfortunately, many victim's families were threatened with judicial committees themselves if they were to go to the police, so evidence was not available. When the Biblical doctrine of "2 witnesses" was written down, the possibility of scientific proof on the level of forensic evidence did not even exist - you'd think the WT would acknowledge this!
In short, it might be possible that there are more JWs (since all JWS might be included in the sample) who are child or spouse abusers, than there are Catholic priests (not all Catholics) who are abusers. -

Too funny. It's nice to work with people that you can get to know and have a good time.
Thanks for the b-day wishes. People haven't made such a fuss over my birthday since I was a kid!

It tends to be very hard to fool me, since April Fool's is my birthday (the doctor told my parents I was going to be born in March, and be a boy...April Fool's!) and I'm always aware of what day it is!
It is not funny to joke about being fired!

Wedding Rituals,Rules,Traditions/a good thing or not?
by plmkrzy inmost wedding traditions, like throwing rice and eating cake, started long ago.
veils.
roman brides wore veils 2,000 years ago.

I remember a JW newly baptized woman who was really pissed because they would not play "heres comes the bride" in the kingdom hall becausew it was Pagan
Good grief.
"Worldly" I'd give them but "pagan" I won't. It's from an opera, not part of "pagan Christendom"...matter of fact, at least some Catholic churches won't allow it in a Catholic wedding (so I've read). At most it's secular tradition, like wedding rings

by Thunder Rider inhere is a story sure to bring a chuckle.

Oh, Gawwwwd. Tell Sheila I feel for her. It's bad enough when the cat (or the kids or whoever) makes a mess, somehow things always seem to go from bad to worse! And having a mess like that in the washer is just a nightmare!
With me stuff like this always seems to happen when I'm already stressed and don't have a minute to spare, much less an hour or more to clean the mess out of the washer!!
I suppose it would be totally uncharitable to say I'm rather glad it's her this time and not me!!
