My dad was 82. He was on life support and the doctors told us that he never be off it. Because he had no living will, it was up to us to decide to turn off the respirator. We agreed to turn it off the next day, and that night all the intravenous paraphenalia was removed and a DNR put on him. I hoped he would pass that night. The next morning, we stayed with him until it was over. It was the most devasting, heart-breaking, wrenching moment of my life. It's been nearly two years and still as painful today as it was then.

by Paralipomenon ini received a call last night that my grandmother had a stroke.
my first thought was "finally".
i know how awful that sounds, but her health has been deteriorating for years.

When I first started working, I missed a meeting once because of work and was told that I should quit my job because it was interfering with my meeting attendence. So, I kept the job and ended up quitting the meetings instead! But, at the end, no one questioned my missing any of the meetings and service. They have never bothered to try to get me back. It's been more than 25 years.

Whats the strangest thing you've seen someone get in trouble for?
by LaniB ini remember one windy summer day, after a meeting on sunday morning, i walked out of the hall behind a sister who was part of the church congregation with her two teenage children.
her husband did not attend.
the wind caught her dress unexpectedly and blew it up a'la marilyn monroe and revealed that she was wearing (shock, horror) french knickers...... there were a few murmers behind me which i at the time put down to things like "oh poor girl, so embarrassing".

I was counselled once because someone told the CO that while out in service, I was seen taking a ceramic planter off someone's porch and smashing it on the ground. I was shocked and told him it never happened, not even accidently, but he kept insisting someone saw me do it. I never went out in service again.

Your opinion on my really important question, please.
by jambon1 indoes a jw upbringing simply confuse a child or is it really damaging?.
i have no doubt that a jw child is, at least, confused with life.
in my own case my wife brings up my 2 children (aged 5 & 2) as jw`s.

I was raised in the borg. My childhood was not a fun one at all. It consisted of school, meetings and service. My sibs and I really had no friends since we couldn't associate with outsiders and close friendships in the hall were totally frowned upon. It was very lonely. Today, as adults, none of us have close friends. What few friends I do have are kept at arm's length. I don't enjoy the holidays and ignore my birthday. I've never been able to just cut loose and have fun. I've been out of it for nearly half my life and still can't shake it all off. It crushes the spirit. It is extremely difficult, for a child, to be separate from the world. Give them choices...give them options... but don't take away their childhood.

Those raised as JWs-Do you recall the path of doubts that led you to leave?
by ithinkisee ini posted a similar topic a year and a half ago.
i thought with all the new people it would be interesting to ask it again.

Hey Jaguarbass.... at least you were elsewhere for holiday parties in school.... when I was a kid, my mother seriously considered keeping my sibs and me out of school on the day of holiday parties. She spoke to the PO..who said that staying out of school when not sick was like lying and insisted that we attend school and sit through it, just to make a witness by our non-participation. It was really crappy to be sitting in the classroom while all the fun was going on and not doing anything. One girl in my 4th grade class felt so sorry for me that she gift wrapped a little package of kleenex and left it on my desk.

I remember when the change from "bulletin" to information board was made. It was probably sometime in the late 1960s to early 1970s. I thought it was a lot of "bull" back then.

by ButtLight ini was wondering if anyone has ever done this, and knows how to go about getting the info.. i want to know how old it is, all the previous tennents, if any of them are dead, and or died in this house.
all that good stuff.. it would be nice if i could find it out on the net.......instead of running all over the place.

Another place to check would be the registry of deeds in your county. You might be able to research it if you have the plat numbers of the property. About a year ago our bank gave us the abstract to our house and that had the complete history of the property (and it made for some interesting reading!)

Remember how great the get-togethers were in the 1980's??
by PaNiCAtTaCk ini remembers skating parties at least once a month, volleyball at the park, get-togethers where everyone would play bible charades and sing kingdoms songs, going to the river to swim with the whole congregation after the sunday meeting, spending the afternoon at the lake eating watermelon and water skiing.
it was a great upbringing!
also, i dont want to leave out the strong feelings of eliteness that i had even as a child, of having the truth.

Growing up in the late 50's and 60's, the hall would have get togethers. The problem was, we would find out about them after the fact. For the most part we were never invited; being part of a divided household made all the difference. So, when in our teens, my sisters (sibs) and I would go roller skating. But, somehow, word got out and a lot of the parents would dump their kids off at the rink for us to watch. We stopped going.

Several years ago my husband's aunt passed away. In clearing up her things, someone gave him a bottle of Mudslide that she had stashed away. Since we seldom drink, we were not too familiar with Mudslides and found that we enjoyed it very much. Now, we pick up a bottle once in while. And whenever we have a drink, we raise our glasses in toast and say, "Thank you, Aunt Betty"

Jeez... it's been 24 years since I faded... and no visits at all. But,they'd have a hard time now since I moved out of state in 2001.
