I'm a nearly 50 year old (gasp) cancer survivor who has spent the past 32 years working in bookie joints (OK..OK...I'm a librarian) and have been married since Aug 2001 to a really terrific guy I met in a chat room. I'm so short that when it rains I'm the last to know...well, I tell everyone I'm actually 7' 2" tall....5' 2" in height and two feet to walk on. I enjoy reading, cooking, reading, travelling, reading, surfing the net...did I mention reading? I also play the accordion for my own enjoyment (not for anyone else's).

Do You Like To Gamble?
by minimus inone of the sins that a jehovah's witness can get disfellowshipped for is gambling.
those that occasionally gamble, even for pennies, are considered "greedy ones".
of course, playing the stock market or futures is not considered gambling these are "investments".personally, i enjoy a little gambling.

In March of 1987 I was scheduled for a lumpectomy and was half scared out of my wits. The night before the surgery, a family member took me out to play bingo to get my mind off things for a while. The first game of the evening was a three part special. The first part was a $50 which someone won. The second part was $150 which I won with another person and we split. The last part was a full card blackout for $500, for which I was the only winner. Needless to say, my mind completely off the upcoming surgery for the rest of the evening.
The next morning I underwent the surgery. The tumor was removed successfully and everything was fine. I now refer to is as my "bingo surgery" because the tumor was B-9 (benign).

It's really tough being raised as a JW. Even with birthdays and Christmas aside, it was just the constant pressure of trying to live up to an ideal that could never be attained. No matter how hard I tried, it was never good enough. It wasn't so much my Mom (Dad is an unbeliever) as it was the CO who never had kids of his own and gave us (myself and four siblings) a real tough time. I remember being 7-8 years old and worried about not making my quota of 10 hours a month in FS...being terrified of thunderstorms because I thought it was Armageddon...no kid should have to worry about stuff like that. Between school and homework, book studies, ministry school, field service, public talks and watchtower studies that had to be prepared, along with home Bible study, there wasn't much time to be just a normal kid. My teen years, for the most part, are a blank.
I'm turning 50 this summer...and when I look back, I just feel sad for that little kid...

I've been in the library field for over 30 years...and I'm only 49 years old. I started out working as a page in a large public library and worked my way up as far as I could go without the education. I now have a BA in English-Literature (class of 2001) and am thinking of going for my MLS. I retired from that library in 2001(with 30 years service) and now am the director of a very small library in another state. The community is thrilled..I'm the first director with a library background they've ever had. Small communities are not as strict about the education requirements.
Some colleges offer courses for library technician...that may be something you'd want to look into to start off. Make sure any library courses are ALA approved (American Library Association)...especially when pursuing an MLS. Browse through your local library to familiarize yourself with how the Dewey Decimal system works. (Academic libraries use the Library of Congress, and government documents are classified using Superintendent of Documents)
It's a great field to work in...connecting with books and people. I've been doing it practically all my life... and absolutely no regrets.

I am sitting here and looking out the window at the bright sunshine. The temp has gone up in the past half hour and it is now 4 degrees F. Last week we had a heat wave...the temp went up to 26F, a rise of about 50 degrees. How cold is it??? It's so cold that the chickens are running around with a capon...it's so cold that when I started a fire in the burning barrel, the flames froze...it's so cold even the icicles don't want to hang around...it's so cold that Jack Frost is now known as Jack Frigid...it's so cold that my goosebumps have goosebumps....

Libraries all over the country are in trouble. They don't generate a lot of revenue which is why libraries are one of the first to get budget cuts. Closing them is not the answer...when the economy goes down, a lot of libraries see an increase in use. But a lot are going to have to cut their hours, cut staff, and cut out services in order to survive. Maybe libraries should have a small charge for certain services they provide, such as public access computers. The trouble is, it's always the poor who will be hurt by this. There are no easy answers. But the bottom line is, we need the libraries to be open, even if on reduced hours and services.
