A number of years ago, one of the very few JW-raised girls I knew was leading a double life. It was incredible just how much of a Jekyl & Hyde transformation it was. Without elaborating, she was more promiscuous than any girl I ever met anywhere. She even ran away from home for awhile and worked as a stripper. Then she decided to go back to her other identity, play the good role for awhile and got married to some unsuspecting JW shmuck from the KH. I haven't heard what ever happened to her since.

Dating a JW info
by Lady Lee inother than telling a person to run:what do you think a person (who knows nothing about the jws) needs to know if they are getting involved with a jw.what would be helpful to them to end things before they get further involved?what will help them if they decide to go further and marry this jw?what challenges would a non-jw woman have if she gets involved with the jw man?what about having children and the struggles that will develop from that?.
if you think of anything else that would be halpful please add it to the thread.
i would like to have a lot of this info in one thread besides some of the great "dating a jw" threads we already have in the best of section.

FYI: I supplied the link for ordering the book in my post. It is available from freeminds.org. Anyway, one last piece of advice I could definitely give is to have him agree with you that the things you discuss should stay between you two. Have him agree not to go running to anyone else and blab to them what you are discussing.

Catholic Answers comment on the REASONING book
by Dogpatch instrategies of the jehovah's witnesses .
there may be no religious organization that engages in more publishing, proportionately to its membership, than the watch tower bible and tract society (watch tower society or wts for short)?the publishing arm of the jehovah?s witnesses.
each month jehovah?s witnesses (jws) distribute millions of books, magazines, and pamphlets, in dozens of languages.

Catholics should at least take note of the JWs? willingness to promote what they believe. This is perhaps one lesson we can learn from them.
I don't agree with this, even though it's well intentioned. Their "willingness to promote what they believe" probably has a lot to do with the fact that they are told they will ultimately be destroyed by God if they don't log in those hours.

Well, I think THE church, as it became more and more structured simply became the organized Catholic church (or catholic church) headquartered in Rome. This consolidation was inevitable and probably necessary as they were sorting out the Canon of scriptures, settling disputes over core doctrine, etc. But as with any organization that obtains unchecked power and control, I think, it eventually got too self-absorbed with power, too self-promoting...thus the need for reform. Whether or not the early church referred to itself as "Catholic" or not, I think, is not totally relevant. I think that all Christian churches, along with the Catholic church, share the same roots and foundation. The JWs, whether they want to admit it or not, owe the collection of the scriptures they consider inspired to that same foundation.

The Reasoning book is pretty wacko.....then again, so are alot of the Catholic doctrines.
Well I can read Catholic articles and respectfully disagree with a lot of it, but at least it doesn't give me the sick feeling in my stomach that the WTS material does. I guess its the propagandistic style, the slick emotional appeals, convoluted reasoning etc., etc. in books like "Reasoning" really gets to me, vs. the straightforward, academic approach of Catholic literature.
Edited to add:
Cool! I'm not a newbie anymore!

Sounds like you're getting somewhere. I'm glad. Since you guys are looking at what various spiritual guides have to offer, perhaps this may be a way to bring up the question: "In our search for understanding, what is it about human guides, in general, that one should be cautious about?"
In answer to this question (if he likes to read), my thought is perhaps to purchase two copies of Steven Hassan's "Combatting Cult Mind Control" (one for each of you) and present it to him as being a book that is widely recognized as outlining key criteria by which to evaluate teachers and organizations, religious or not. It describes one key reason certain organizations, like the International Churches of Christ, Scientology, the Moonies, The Way, Landmark Forum, etc., fall under harsh criticizm. Say the book has nothing to do with religious discussions or doctrines or criticizing the Jehovah's Witnesses. In fact, it makes no mention Jehovah's Witnesses or the Watchtower Society at all. Try to convince him that it would be very enlightening as you both are evaluating things. If he shows no interest, in any case it would be very valuable for you to read. But if he does agree to read it, it would be a good launching point for many good discussions that have nothing to do with doctrine.
Any thoughts on this idea from others?

I am very interested in some of those topics to be discussed, but sadly, it would not be practical for me to make any sort of conference like that (not to mention geographical constraints). Are notes or written summaries of the discussions ever available? I would be interested.

The Awake's Lying Image of Witnesses (Oct 22)
by metatron inif you didn't know that the watchtower society published the awake magazine, you might.
think it was published by some semi-liberal born again group.
doesn't give a realistic representation of most witness families i'm aware of.. .

... 80+% of Witness kids fall away...
Really? That's staggering! Can this statistic be substantiated? Is this common knowledge among the R&F?
