James Jackson - each to his own. To me, she was sassy, too-big-for-her-britches, lacking in humility, etc. She came to a congregation in which I have a friend and in her early twenties acted like she was the boss. You can have her.

Scriptures that now seem to apply to JWs
by Magnum inin the last year or so, many bible passages that i used to strongly and confidently apply to non-jws, began to seem to apply to jws.
this change in my thinking was shocking and disturbing.
i can best describe the feeling by comparing it to the feeling i got in 1981 when i watched the movie dead and buried starring james farentino.. in that movie there are murders committed in a small town by dead people reanimated by a doctor doing experiments.

Island Man - what you wrote about Mt 24:39 is very interesting. A few months ago, I started analyzing and researching the very point you made, but got sidetracked and forgot about it. I don't remember what moved me to analyze it; I must have seen the verse in another translation and noticed that it didn't say "took no note", as if they knew, but simply ignored or paid no attention or got distracted. You have rekindled my interest. What you wrote about the Greek's simply saying they "did not know" and how that fits the whole context better than "they took no note" is worth analyzing. Tomorrow I'm going to more slowly read what you wrote and make notes and restart my research on the subject. (Also, the point about Pr 30:21-23 is interesting.)

Ecc 12:12 - To the making of many books there is no end, and much devotion [to them] is wearisome to the flesh.
The org has made many books. They just go and on about the same old stuff - mostly fluff. And lately they have become so dumbed down. Much devotion, in fact, almost any devotion, to them is wearisome. They distract. They keep JWs busy with light duty study and reading that keeps them from having time to question and do deeper research and doubt. JWs get the false impression that they are being filled with spiritual food, yet they are starving because there is no nutrtional value.

Thanks again.

I agree. Yet the "sheep" are supposed to unquestioningly cling to their every word and decision as though they were absolute truth and tansmitted from heaven.

litte_Socrates - I think that's actually what happened with a lot of us who were formerly active JWs; we removed the planks from our eyes. We gained the ability to see the fallacy of our own belief system. The majority of JWs are unable to remove the planks; they don't even think they exist. They're busy sitting high and criticizing everybody and everything outside JWdom and discussing how they're the chosen people of God and are the only ones who are going to be saved, but they can't (or refuse to) see the wrongs and craziness of their own religion.

Just Curious About Something
by EmptyInside insorry, couldn't think of a better title for this post, without it being long.. i was thinking this morning,if ex-jws, who were born into the group less likely to join another religion after leaving.
vs. the witnesses who belonged to a church before joining the religion.. from my own prespective, being raised a witness,i have no intention of joining any religion.
and it seems that born-ins are less likely to join a religion after leaving the cult.. in my own experience,i think it's religious burn-out to tell the truth.

I'm almost born in. Mother came in when I was very young. Grandfather was in when I was born.
I have no desire to be part of a religion, however, I'm seeking answers, and if I find a religion that I'm convinced has the answers, I will join it. I'd rather just find some individuals who can show me truth and have discussions and maybe some association with them.

DD - as JWs, we thought that we had the capactiy to recognize the ring of truth and that that indicated that we had good hearts. I say now that those of us who have the capacity to recognize the hypocrisy, money-loving, craziness, shallowness, idolatry (GB & JW.ORG worship), falsities, etc. in JWdom have something that the believing JWs don't have. Call it what you want, but we have something. Maybe it's just plain intelligence, but I think it's more than that. I think it's honesty, discernment, righteousness, etc. I feel privileged that I am one of the few from among JWs who can recognize that something's wrong. I think that's indicative of higher character.

Another point: I have wondered a lot lately about whether it's those of us who have the capacity or honesty (or whatever it is) to see the wrongs in JWdom who are the righteous ones. We used to think as JWs that we had the ability to recognize the "ring of truth" - a "ring" that non-JWs couldn't recognize. But now I'm thinking that those of us on this forum (and other doubters) are the ones who have the abiltiy to recognize the ring of truth (and the ring of untruth).
As I observe the state of JWdom today (getting dumber and dumber, shallower and shallower, stranger and stranger, more commercial and mainstream, more unreasonable, having more members who can't recoginze logic and reason, etc.) I consider myself privileged to have the ability to recongnize that something's wrong and to have the honesty and strength to admit it.
So, don't feel that you are somehow inferior or that something's wrong with you. I look at the masses of 100%-believing, GB-worshipping JWs and think they're the ones who are inferior and deficient if they don't recognize something majorly wrong.
