so says harold camping-.
-(newser) - as you may have heard, the rapture is coming on may 21, 2011. self-taught radio and internet preacher harold camping is sure of it, and he's got iron-clad logic on his side.
see, by examining carbon dating, tree rings, and other highly scientific data, he's concluded that noah started loading his ark in 4990 bc, he tells usa today.
Sorry, not possible; we already have plans for Memorial Day weelend.
the "situation"a brother and sister from my parents congregation committed adultry with one another.
he was single, she was married to another brother in the same hall.
her husband divorced her.
No, there's nothing in the book about it. Your mother is speculating, passing on gossip she's surely heard out in the car group in FS.
The elders may take a very long time to reinstate because spouse swapping in whatever form it takes is viewed as particularly heinous in the JW organization.
for you us citizens (and those whose nations have a similar patriotic oath), how do you feel about your children saying the pledge in school if it's customary?.
my daughter is in 3rd grade and part of her school's morning routine includes the pledge.
when we stopped attending meetings a year ago, my wife and i explained to her that we don't agree with the jw "idolatry" classification so, naturally, she started joining her class in the pledge.. fast forward to the present: my wife and i are both non-theists who want to raise ethical, caring, tolerant children, but also children who aren't afraid to stand apart, especially when that stand isn't popular.
I no longer object to identifying myself as an American citizen, so these days the pledge is just fine with me.
As for my kids, if I had it to do over again I'd want them to pledge, I'd want them to stand for the national anthem, I'd want them to sing Happy Birthday and have some freakin' cake. I would want them to feel that they're they part of society at large. Later, when they grow up and start thinking for themselves, they can rebel if they want.
i have a question.
if jws are a cult, what is the motivation of the leaders?
what are they getting out of controlling all these people?.
Power corrupts. Idolization, when you are the object of it, is addictive. JWs are the home of the five-suit janitor and the high school dropout chief executive. On top of that, you get to be right about everything.
well, it's that time of year again.
the memorial season is upon us and jws the world over are getting ready for the celebration which this year falls on 17 april.
for the first time since 1975, yours truly will not attend and i couldn't be happier.
The process is this:
1. One year you just don't go.
2. The sky does not fall.
3. You lose the fear.
My last one was '03. We happily skipped it in '04, although my wife and I held our own "mini-memorial." The next year, we went to a local Episcopal church and took communion. That was way more inspirational and the music's a lot better, too. We reached the conclusion that religion is really a personal expression of your own unique faith, despite what the dubs teach.
so i just came across an article in the watchtower (december 1, 1959 page 726) where it mentions that pioneers (or should i say culportuers?
) in the 1930s had to put in a minimum of 150 hoursper month in field circus with the phonograph (i'm guessing the record being played was rutherford's "millions" speech).
i have to wonder how many pioneers the wt would actually have nowadays if this were still the minimum monthly quota and if they'd still have to stand on a street corner with some sort of audio system... in today's economy, i really don't think they'll find much more than 2 potential candidates per circuit... which is obviously the reason that the gb keeps lowering the bar... .
they've offered a discount for the month of April 2011, similar to a coupon
And they're about to learn what many other businesses already know: Once you go down that slope, the customers will never pay retail again!
just curious, because i'm trying to get my head around what makes someone think they were annointed?
and then, if they left, what made them realise they weren't?
and how did you feel about discovering that.. i read crisis of concience and that was a real turning point for me, i don't think there is any going back to old thought processess after that.
Here's what I learned in 30 years of WT immersion: Anyone who thinks they are "annointed" is delusional at best, seriously deranged at worst... and impossible to convince otherwise. If you doubt this, ask yourself: How many "annointed" dubs decide at some point that they are not and abandon the concept?
If you are paying attention you know that recently the number of self-appointed "annointed" within the JW ranks is growing. As more dubs learn the WTS has officially abandoned its 1935 "deadline" and the Society continues to soften its teaching that this number would steadily shrink until the end comes, you can expect the number to increase even more.
i'm sure many of you are familiar with that line.
it continues to be a card played frequently by the wt society.. is there any truth to it?
"apostates" do tend to tear down.
Reviewing some of the great comments here:
A sense of tremendous peace came over me the moment I accepted that what I believed was a lie, and when it came to the question, "then what IS the truth if not THIS . . . ?, being able to say with all rationality, "I don't know, and it's OK that I don't know".
Exactly! Once you realize that, you're well on the road to recovery. That was my "liberating" moment, along with the realization that I did not have to spend my life sitting in judgment.
i'm sure many of you are familiar with that line.
