  Time For A New Car.

  our nissan primera is beginning to show her age somewhat.

  consequently, her ladyship and i have decided that we'll start looking around when we come back from the usa next month.. we've done some preliminary enquiring, sounded out each others preferences, and we've decided that most of all we like....... the new mini!.

  of course it would have to be the mini cooper, they go like s*** off a shovel!.

  Just dropping in to say that scholar is the kind of guy who gives educated people a bad name. It shouldn't be long now before someone points out the old joke about academic credentials that goes roughly like this:

  BS stands for Bull Sh**

  MS stands for More Sh**

  PhD stands for Piled Higher and Deeper

  Based on my life experience, I can assure you this is sometimes close to the mark. My observation: the more a person insists on including such initials after his name and demands these credentials be recognized, the less common sense he possesses and the more difficulty he has in negotiating real life.

  And yes, scholar, I have earned some initials after my name.

  Returning Evil for Evil; The Legacy of Abuse

  when i was growing up i was told that as jesus' followers, we should return evil for evil to no one.

  it occurred to me today that even though that was what the jws preached, in reality a much different lesson was taught.

  often when i did something that was wrong, i got paddled.

  Wow, Tammy (swan), brilliant post!

  It points to something that's always puzzled me. JWs have specific doctrine about child-rearing (spare rod, spoil child). At one time, society as a whole shared that view. Now, however, society has moved away from corporal punishment because of scientific psychological studies that show much harm can be done to small children when they are physically punished. In the popular culture, spanking your children is now viewed as uninformed at best, barbaric at worst. Ironically, most JWs parents I know have adopted the world view, at least to some extent. There's no data to prove it, but anecdotally I know a lot fewer JW parents are spanking their kids now. They've been influenced by popular culture (like the Oprah show and Dr. Phil and countless popular magazines).

  The result of all this is a slow but steady change in doctrine within the JW society, wherein the rank and file are moving ahead of the organizational leadership in adopting new and different standards. I am not suggesting this will happen with all doctrine; I'm just making an observation.

  The boring and uneventful lives of a JW

  i faded as a jw about 8 years ago.

  to me the meetings were just plain boring as hell and so "robotic".

  i never did feel true love amongst the brothers and sisters as they always like to tout.

  I have wondered if the lack of holiday and birthday celebration is deliberate to avoid having Witnesses notice how their lives are passing them by, in effect hardly used. Birthdays in particular encourage the marking of time.

  Interesting observation, metatron. Casinos build their palaces without windows or clocks for exactly the same reason. It's to control the players, deluding them into a sense of timelessness; they push the outside world and all its cares away and concentrate on the spinning wheels and hypnotic dance of cards. Result: they stay longer and spend more money.

  Coincidence? I doubt it.

  Watchtower Perverts

  has the tower a higher percentage of perverts than in other religions because of the two witness rule -- or do you think they are about the same and no different to other religions?

  With all due respect, the issue is not whether JWs attract more, or even as many, perverts as other religions. This is an organization that insists it channels the true God in all its actions and pronouncements, and that His holy spirit guides the organization as He is their "husbandly owner." Further, appointed shepherds of this flock are said to be granted those positions by holy spirit.

  If all this were true, the number of perverts running around in the organization would be zero or, allowing for the occasional fallen angel, extremely low. The facts indicate holy spirit is largely absent from the picture. So, even if there were fewer than the average number of perverts at the KH, their mere presence brings these claims into question.

  Y'all are completely missing the point of this recall. A recent newspaper editorial cartoon was on the money. Two caricatures appear in the cartoon. One is Arnold, carrying an assault rifle, and the caption: Destroyed Los Angeles in Terminator 3. The caption under Gray Davis' caricature is: Destroyed entire state of California in real life.

  This is a revolution in which people are taking back the government. They would give the state to almost anybody instead of Davis. The sentiment is the local dogcatcher would make a better governor than this guy. It's not about Arnold... or the 135 screwball candidates. It's about: You're outta here, buddy, and so is the next idiot who sits in your chair if HE doesn't "get" it. Coming in 2004: Historic, unprecedented recall of the entire Legislature!

  Elders once a year check-up on DF ones.

  we got this call from one of the elders who df'd one of our loved ones.he wanted to know where so and so lives,phone # etc.this after two and a half years.they wanted to make contact to see if that one wanted to return to the congregation.

  ( not like the prodigal,who was restored on the spot by his father,rather ,by sitting for six months in the back of the hall and given the silent treatment.

  he admitted tha elders can't read the heart and make mistakes 'mistakes' destroying someones life is a mistake??

  This is farcical -- I am sure the "arrangement" is just o get their numbers up

  Right! It absolutely is a farce. this "program" was instituted so the org would have something to say to people -- including those inside the congregations -- who complained the act of DFing was so unloving. In reality, most elders would never bother to make these calls if they weren't pressured to do so by the CO and a letter from "mother." The meetings at which elders determine who the recipients of these calls will be is interesting. The instructions make it clear that elders can skip over the names of those who obviously won't have any interest because of their known opposition. A few calls get made so when the CO asks, the elders have an answer.
