No apology necessary. It was a realization like yours that finally forced me to look at the whole collection of objections I had been stuffing down for years. I'd like to make a suggestion: Don't waste energy or emotion trying to find another religion that is "more true." Just examine your own, and make a decision based on what you learn. There will be plenty of time later to find another way to worship, if you should decide that the WT organization does not measure up.
Welcome.

"You say you're atheist, but since you are good and ethical, you're really more like a Christian." Whatever. Not the first time I've heard that idea expressed. This essay is just a wordy version of the same silly idea.

Elder asks me why we quit... (Long)
by Odrade inin this thread i mentioned having a long chat with an elder last summer.
i didn't realize i had never posted the story, so here it is.. last summer (when i went to buy my new camera lens) i ran into one of my favorite jws at the photography shop.
he was buying a camera bag for his new dslr, and i saw him, went up and greeted him, hugged him.

Thanks all who have read and replied. The amazing part to me, I kept my composure, both externally AND internally, easily, for the entire conversation. I don't think he was as calm.
I know I couldn't have had the same conversation a couple of years ago. I would have been too emotional. It was also very freeing to realize that I had no fear of disclosing to this elder (who knows my family and my in-laws, the only JWs with whom we have contact,) exactly where I stood regarding the WT. I didn't have any compulsion to make an official disassociating statement, but at the same time, I wasn't worried about challenging the authority of the Organization. Even though this elder is one of the most accessible leaders I know, he still was on unfamiliar ground having a (former) sister challenging his authority and his words. -

llbh, I agree. There are some very intelligent people in the WT organization. I feel that it is sometimes even more difficult for the very intelligent to escape the WT, since the mind becomes so adept at delusion and excuse-making, that one can rationalize away nearly anything. This particular JW is extremely intelligent and quick witted. Unfortunately, being smart is no particular defense against unreasonableness.
Shutterbug: the son lives quite far away from me, and I haven't seen him in years. The father is quite admiring of strong women, his wife is a lovely, smart and powerful woman. M*** is a bit of an exception in many ways, for an elder. With everything he has had to deal with (as an elder) for all of these years, I find it very difficult to comprehend how he could still have faith in the WT. It's baffling.
