reading the bible as literature, is something that scholars have been doing for quite some time.
below is a link, to 13 introductory pages, to the book " how to read the bible as literature".
the 13 introductory pages, make some valid points.
Interesting stuff, thank you. I'll have to look for this book at Powells or library.

I'd have to agree with Jess. Being raised JW does give you a headstart on academic skills. I don't know that JW children are necessarily brighter, but it could seem that way when they have been taught to read so early, and converse easily with adults. But I think it all levels out by the end of elementary school, if education and schooling is not emphasized.
I suspect any cross--section of toddlers and young children will seem above average if they are taught in the same manner, with so much focus on reading, listening and speaking. I do have to say that being raised JW, no matter all the warped views and teachings, has taught me skills many of my classmates do not have. I can sit for several hours and listen to a less than inspiring speaker (professor or teacher) and pull out the interesting points easily. I learned to focus on lectures, and my listening skills are possibly better than average. (Although probably most of my friends would say I talk so much, when do I listen??? haha)
I also have found that, although I'm just now learning how to "research"--being taught to only use the WT index (bleh, what a joke), I do know how to "study." Most of my texts now look like my WT used to, with definitions and explanations written in the margins, and main points highlighted. So, while other students are easily just as intelligent, if not more so, I LOOK more competent in the academic arena. After all, in the DUMBs it was all about the appearances right? Funny how some of that stuff turned out to be useful after all.

when they call their number is blocked out.this makes them unavailable when you want to call them.don't even try to call them after 9pm at bethel,no matter what the emergency!they only call you to get you to come to the meetings and go out into field service!.
so now we turned on ( acr ) anonymous call rejection, which allows us to reject calls from callers who have blocked the display of their telephone numbers.now my number will not ring and the caller will hear a message that instructs them to hang up and remove their blocking and call again.. since we did this, elders are not calling us anymore.as i said they want to know your number,so they can call you to come to meetings, otherwise they can't be bothered.they give their cell number to a select few only.the congregation as a whole don't have the elders cell phone numbers.don't try to get them at bethel either, once they know who is calling they hit the ignore button in their head.. really, i can't be bothered by the elders calling me about the same old same old line.but for those who really need some kind of help or information about whatever, this shows that they are not truly shepherds of sheep.. blueblades
I never knew the home numbers of most of the elders in my last hall either. And when I look in the phone book, they are unlisted. My SIL in her cong would call and ask for various elders' ##, and was put off. They would say "I'll call him and have him call you." So then maybe the elder would call back, but block caller ID. I don't know if she was ever able to get ## for most of the elders, even though she tried. Nice shepherds.

in my wanderings around the net yesterday i came across this interesting piece about childrens' involvment in the crusades.
i often think there are historical parallels between certain events and the way that the wbts treat the youths under their influence, for example the hilter youth movement.
sea did not part and let them walk across, as stephen had.
very interesting. bump.

Yep Ray, it's all to the good. I started looking for her about 8 years ago, when I was still a good JW. Someone I worked with said to me: "Your best friend??? What is wrong with you, you need to find her!" That was the first little wedge--when I started to think "What is wrong with this picture?"
Let's just hope she doesn't tell too many tales!

that question is raised on page 709 in the "proclaimers" book.
notice the answer the book gives.
"because they believe and accept what the bible says as to the identifying marks of true worshipers.
Remember when we used to use words such as 'the truth', 'great crowd', 'little flock', 'john class' and 'the faithful and discreet slave'
I still use those words. They are stuck in my head. Can't get them out ..... HELP!
Seriously, does anyone else have some of the JW programming terms so stuck in their mind that they just pop out during conversation, even though you know they are wrong?
