Well here is an article on Obama's efforts to restrict certain kinds of guns I am looking for the article I read on his department of justice chief who was last year the assistant department of justice chief under Bush if I am thinking for the right guy in his cabinet. I'll be back if I find it before I get to tired.

jeeprube: People are literally buying guns and ammunition faster than factories can produce them.

I've had arguments on JWD before about the madness of gun 'control' in America - and I'm not setting myself up for a beating again. All I would say is that most of the 'reasoning' shown on threads like this simply diminishes Americans in the minds of most Brits and Europeans. I don't say that to be insulting, just wanted you guys to know.

Nicolaou, as I'm sure you're aware, we all have a fundamental right to protect ourselves, even using deadly force if the circumstances warrant it.

Having the responsibility and freedom to make our own choices about how to protect ourselves is something we value highly in this country, and we are willing to accept the necessary risks this entails. This is not the only way we value our freedom and convenenience at the cost of complete safety--automobiles are the number one killer in the country. We aren't about to give them up either.

The bottom line is. Trying to take away guns from us would be like shifting a car from 5th gear to 1st.

Right. And frankly, I care far more about keeping my family safe, (and fed, if necessary) than i do for what someone who lives 5500 miles away thinks of me. Sorry, if you don't live here, you don't understand. I don't live there, and don't understand the much higher rate of physical assault in the UK, so I can't speak on it.

If you say that you don't want to be insulting, then you insult someone......you get the point. Most Americans don't care what Europeans think of us. You guys seem to think we're a bunch of crazed gun toting psychopaths. In reality most people in the US don't own a gun and wouldn't know how to use one if it were handed to them. Our history with guns is pretty simple, we live in a huge country. It's massive. When our forefathers settled here they reasoned that the best way to defend and feed their families in the wilderness was with a gun. It's pretty simple.

The men and women in this country who care about gun rights are some of the most responsible handlers of guns in the world. Yes, every once and a while some idiot shoots himself cleaning his gun.

However, we still like to practice the skills that our forefather's used to survive and defend their families. Call it being prepared for a worst case scenario. How many of you Europeans can kill an animal from 300 yards away, field dress it, haul it out of the woods, butcher it at home, and put meat on the table? Not to mention practice the field craft in the woods necessary to find and kill that animal?

Oh but Jeeprube, I just go down to my butcher's shop and pick up a steak, get with the times man. Some of us like to be prepared for anything. That's the type of people who settled this country, kicked the British out, and became the world's dominant nation. How'd we do it? With our guns and our abilities.

Europeans like to look down on Americans because they view us as less civilized as they. We look down on Europeans because we view them as weak. We are not weak. If we were, we'd still be worried about what the Queen of England ate for breakfast.

GALLUP: SUPPORT FOR GUN CONTROL AT HISTORIC LOW. “In Gallup polling conducted prior to last week’s gun massacre at an immigrant center in Binghamton, N.Y., only 29% of Americans said the possession of handguns by private citizens should be banned in the United States. While similar to the 30% recorded in 2007, the latest reading is the smallest percentage favoring a handgun ban since Gallup first polled on this nearly 50 years ago.” Note the graphic.

    Gun-control efforts represent “backward thinking.”

Someone mentioned that it is not realistic to expect that citizens would ever use their weapons to "overthrow" the government, etc.

    This is a valid observation.

However, please allow me to relate a different example of how firearms in the hands of citizens prevent tyranny on the local level.

In my neck of the woods, for example, a Sheriff's Deputy knows that almost every house contains firearms. This encourages an environment in which officers/deputies are circumspect, cognizant of the reality that should he need to visit a private home, his paperwork/charges/suspicions/actions need to be above board and legal.

A single deputy/officer represents the GOVERNMENT. Should he choose to abuse his authority/power, the firearm in the hand of the private citizen can be a deterrent, etc.
