    Joan Rivers

She can laugh at herself and is one of the few women in Hollywood proud of her nips and tucks.

Had to think about this for a bit, and realized that the people I admire most are those who live life on their own terms, enjoy the hell out of every minute of it, do their best to make sure that the people around them enjoy every minute of it as well, and don't apologize or feel guilty about doing things that send a lot of people crawling off to blubber to their elders or therapists or priests. People who were wonderfully alive and wonderfully imperfect and goddamn happy for both.

Those who come to mind quickly are a varied group: Henry Miller, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Carl Sagan, Jim Harrison, Douglas Adams, Edward Abbey, Ken Wilber, Josephine Baker, Neil Young and I'm sure there are more.

But, that having been said, I find it also interesting that these lists tend to be made up of people that are famous, and that we've likely never met - which is certainly the case with mine. Though, in the case of Miller, Sagan and Abbey, certainly, through their writings I feel I've come to know them.

I also feel that there are folks on this board that I've come to admire for these same traits.

I admire my partner, husband, boyfriend (you fill in the blank), Wayne. He is such a kind, loving and patient man.

I admire him because he puts up with all my issues, and I do have more than my share.
I admire him because he listens when I need to rant and knows when to shake his head and say "Really?" or "I didn't know that." at just the right time to make me think the totally understands what I'm talking about everytime I go off on a tangent.
I admire him because he has spent many years helping mentally challenged individuals build as independent a life as possible.
I admire him because he cared for his mother for four years after her strokes and I never heard one single complaint.

    I love you, Wayne.

Somebody said Joe Satriani. Excellent! He still puts on a great live show, and it's hard for me to believe I first saw him 16 years ago, when he had hair!

    Other people I admire:

Thomas Paine, for telling it like it was.

William Shatner, whose Captain Kirk won all the fights and got all the girls on Star Trek, and for uttering this line from Sat Trek V: "I don't want my pain taken away. I need my pain!" Also for his famous "get a life" skit on SNL, his "Mindmeld" DVD with Leonard Nimoy - truly touching. And of course his 2004 record "Has Been." I don't think there exists a record where the artist gives so much and lets his fans see so much of his heart and his very person.

Jim Kelly, of Buffalo Bills fame, for becoming a great family man in more ways than I can type out.

And of course my mother and father. My dad for working as hard as anybody and providing us with a family business, and also his sage advice and always being on my side with much love. And my mother who is tireless, sympathetic to a tee, charitable with her time and energy, and an absolute saint who everybody loves.

    Love it, Richie!

There are many people here who I admire...for your strength, ability to make me laugh, understanding and compassion.

I admire my maternal grandmother who is a breast cancer survivor, abuse survivor, and the most loving woman I've ever known.
