On a side note: I do prefer that my docters be black or a person of color.

I had a black doctor, a man, examine me after I had my daughter. I loved him. He looked like Re-run from the show What's Happening. He had a very disarming sense of humor and a down to earth, genuine interest in me.

I also loved Cynthia, our black nurse practitioner/midwife. She helped deliver grandson number one and did some of my well health care. She was a amazing and so warm and real. With both the black male doctor and Cynthia, they didn't talk down to me. They treated me like an equal. Of course, Dr. Rebot, my last ob/gyn that Cynthia worked for was cute as a button and he respected my intelligence as a patient. He was always getting into trouble with his staff for spending too long speaking with each of his patients. He loved his wife and respected her. He told me that she was just like the wife on the show Home Improvement.

I apologise, FHN, what was said was not meant to be taken seriously or litterally, but was spoken in jest. Please excuse my offense.

When I was living in London last year I wento one of those clinics to have a full exam. I nearly kealed over when I saw the male Dr come into the room! He had a trainee nurse with him and they gave eachother a full comentary on what they were looking out. I've never felt more humiliated in my life! I guess the point is that it's all the same to the, but when the nurse yelled excitedly "oh can I have a look!" I really did just want to fall into the floor.

I think that these Dr peoples just get too desensitised to the fact that it's not something the patient does every day, or even every year. But I guess to them we all look the same.

I've never been to one either... I'm too scared/intimidated by the whole process..... I've entertained the thought of going but just can't bring myself to do it....

Miss Peaches I hope youre not kidding deary. You should be getting yearly paps. I wish I could be with you to help you through it. It's annoying but it's really about taking care of you.

I've had to have a couple of operations down there in the last couple of years after cancer scares and it was horrible. The consultant was male and really treated me like a piece of meat although he wasn't physically inept - just very unemotional and uncompassionate. Thank god for the nurse who held my hand and distracted me.

The nurse who normally does my smears (paps) is lovely and friendly but she always uses the wrong size speculum and often has to attempt three different ones before she gets the right one which is most uncomfortable and a tad embarassing. Next time 'll remind her that I have a very high cervix and so I don't have to go through the indignity and discomfort.

Hey if they can invent diaper wipe warmers why cant they invent speculum warmers? Maybe I should invent one.

Good point Mrs Jones - how come noone is patenting this invention right now?!

Luckily my nurse always does her best to warm it up with warm water before insertion. warmed jelly might be better tho!
