Literary creativity was never closed. The (Jewish, Christian) canons were eventually closed, which is another question.

In one ear and out the other,
Bring two beer and pass one brother!

Seriously: I get a flavor from the Scriptures that makes me believe that indeed "quaecumque enim scripta sunt ad nostram doctrinam scripta sunt ut per patientiam et consolationem scripturarum spem habeamus." (Romans 15:4) In my estimation they collectively comprise a guidebook for spiritual awakening more than a dogmatist's manual.

If people want rules, they can find them there.

If people want to see a brighter path than rule oriented "spirituality" it shines brightly as well. Each of the characters written about develop throughout their lives into who they become, there are morals to be found that correspond directly to the morals taught by human life today. It is a source of spiritual comfort to those who need it. It is a source of hope to those who need hope. It is a source of strength and courage for those who need these qualities.

It is not, however, a rulebook. Except to those who need one.

In my opinion, opinions should be valued at the recipient's discretion.

The jews never did stop. It's true that the traditional jews don't accept the nt. However, they wrote other stuff for their religion, and have continued since then. As a group, jews are probably the most prolific makers of media. Charles russel also claimed that his books all but replaced the bible.

It was the romans who closed the bible canon. Even it didn't stop at revelation. It has other books as compliments to the bible.

They would be anyone who claimed to be inspired by God to write scripture pass the disciples of the 1st century!

ah ok. maybe you'll be surprised about this, but "they" did. there were lots of sacred scriptures out there until the roman church had enough influence to select only those they liked.

I am sorry but that is a part of history I am unfamilar with. I am not a history scholar by any means...so can you please point me to a link with some info.

So are we talking, then, about recording moments of spiritual estacy, apart from mental illness? God's spoken to me a few times, though I don't talk about it much. I don't like the thought of my experience with the divine being trampled underfoot by skepticism.

Perhaps codification (the canon) was the beginning of the end for Christian creativity.

Or the beginning of another beginning?
