I've been reading a lot about Victorian times in England lately and I can assure you things are vastly improved today compared to back then - such as health, living accommodation, child labour, pollution and average lifespan!
The JWs always try to point out how "worse" the times are now than in previous years, but as has been shown here this is completely untrue. Television makes the world's problems "appear" worse because we see so much sadness on our screens a lot quicker and in a lot more detail than we would have been able to only a decade ago.

I'd much rather live today than in medieval Europe. Or imagine being an Aztech under Spanish domination, most of them were wiped out as were the North American Indians.
Try living under the Tsars.
The Assyrians would skin alive their captives.
The Romans and Crusaders wiped out entire towns villages as did Ghengis Khan
Boys down coal mines, no hospitals - average human age 35-40 today 73-75
You can say that things have slipped since the 50s but back then black people were second class citizen today at least in law, they have equal rights.
It's safe to say that the world is safer today than back then. -

I think it depends on where you happen to live in the world as to whether things are actually better or worse . The apostles did write that things would go from bad to worse and in Mathew Jesus spoke of many catastrophes as being signs of his presense .I think the global warming that causes all those hurricanes is a sign things are getting worse , those things about wiped out the entire southern coast of the US . If you happen to live in africa then you really are faced with some horrible conditions with the aids epidemic and all sorts of fighting going on that I don't think the news bothers with any more since the terror stuff .I think we are faced with nuclear threats every day of our lives which is something previous times didn't have .Sure they had plagues but nothing can compare to a nuclear bomb .

Some things are getting worse and some things are getting better. If you focus on one particular aspect, your view may become polarised.
Just one example would be medical conditions you would undoubtedly die of 100 years ago, and 1000 years ago compared to today. Relatively simple procedures and/or basic medications with no risk today completely cure things which you take for granted which would have taken your life many years ago. And consequently life expectancy is rising rapidly.
I think you also have to take into account how this question would be answered in different parts of the world, in which the standard of living varies greatly even today .... I feel this is a failure of this board often due to the large US contingent.

Hi, Armani. Work for stats can, do you? Is it in the mailroom? Stats Can has an excellent article, linked below, which shows how the media misrepresents their information. Crime rates are dropping.

jgnat , I think it's about impossible to read that page . Perhaps if you copied and enlarged the part you are talking about . I don't know about you but I sure don't feel safer or more secure .Sure technology has made our lifes easier but also is used for building better ways to kill people .
