I have some plans for a group voting system for the next version where, if enought people 'black-ball' someone then they will first get lower posting allowance and eventually none, at least for a while.

The idea is that it will cater for people who vote for everyone (the more votes you cast, the less they count) and also for respected people's votes to count more (you can vote for people as well as against which may allow them to do more on the forum).

Hopefully, this will mean the board is self moderating by the group although there will be some overrides and safeguards built in.

Those are some good ideas you have about a peer group casting votes. Could be interesting.

By the way, I appreciate your posting Friday's email to you. Again, you are showing what an open minded person you are to expose this, which obviously made you question yourself a little, and ask for input.

Even tho I told you on your other thread that for the most part I am against any "shunning" of anyone...any rule has exceptions. If we view this forum as your "house" and we are all guests here...then you have the inalienable right AT ANY TIME to tell someone to leave your house.It doesn't even have to be entirely impartial(in someone else's opinion) you have that right. I am a pretty tolerant person, but if someone came into my house and say for example...slapped one of my kids...he'd be out the door in 1 second with a sore behind...and never to return. Would people say I was shunning that person? SO WHAT?
Anyway, the point is, delete whoever you want, as is your right. You have shown yourself to be so fair...that I for one would never question your decision.

As for Friday's threats: threats are the act of a coward which is precisely what Friday is.

The fact, at least in the US, is that freedom of speech on the internet is virtually total, complete. The freedom enjoyed by Internet users is greater in fact than that allowed television journalism (not that I agree with that Supreme Court opinion). The rights of the press were written specifically with newspapers in mind since there was no television in 1776. When electronic journalism came along, it was viewed slightly differently (and who knows when the Supremes will catch up?).

Now we have the internet. And the Supremes' rulings on this new medium have confimed its rights right alongside newspapers - as opposed to television. In some cases I understand those rights are even greater on the internet. I don't know how that works, but will post it when I find it.

Bottom line? Friday is making toothless threats, just like all cowards.

Promoting of homosexuality is not a crime in any democratic country that I am aware, at least not in North America or Britain (the two places Friday is concerned about). His extortion attempt is appalling. In Toronto the Gay Pride Parade is intended to celebrate (promote) the gay lifestyle. Children line the street , water fights break out...generally a good time for all. Allowing Joel to express his personal preferences is not illegal! Friday makes it sound like you are allowing child porn here. Ignore his threats.

Re: peer moderation. T'is a slippery slope my friend. I think it sounds great in theory but it can also be used against people holding an unpopular viewpoint. It would be a great way of muzzling someone. It also presents the danger of this forum becoming a popularity contest. I personally had enough of cliques while in the Borg. I can't help but think that will happen again.

I personally have dealt with Friday and his manner of posting over at H20. I can say from experience a warning wouldn't have helped change him (can a leopard change his spots?) but as Waiting mentioned it could have taken the fire out of his email. I am not saying to reactivate him, but could be something to remember for future troublemakers.

All that being said. Whatever arrangment you deem necessary for your site Simon, I believe most will cooperate...unfortunately you are not forced to make such arrangments for these people it is the others not willing to cooperate.

As always, I am behind you and your decisions.

Simon, I think you should let yadirf cool off for a couple weeks and let him back in on probation. I think he has a valid point that people on both sides of any issue here have attacked the person instead of the issue. I see no harm in giving him a second chance.

I will say that when I saw his name on the thread where he attacked joel, I did not read any of it, so I don't know how vile the attack was. I figured with the number of pages generated, that it must have gotten pretty instense.

On another thread, I was making some progress, I think, in getting Yadirf to see that JWs and xJWs can get along. I pointed out two threads regarding Duns to demonstrate this. I am not sure if this had any impact or not, because he was cut off before he had a chance to respond, but his comments back to me were getting more moderate.

At any rate Simon, I think you can cut him off later, if his behavior is chronic.

I don't care if Friday is reactivated. His hateful vitriol speaks for itself, and represents the true spirit of the Watchtower better than any so-called apostate could describe.

This is the man, after all, who, when another poster started a thread with a picture of his granddaughter, couldn't wait to point out that both of them were doomed to a violent, ignominious death at the hands of God. What better "witness" can you ask for?

He's a raving mad lunatic fundamentalist, a bigot and all-around asshole -- but I'm not 100% comfortable with his deletion, either.

Hi Simon, Don't let Yadirf bully you! I think you did him and us a great service! No longer than I've been on this board I've seen what a jerk he is! He only came in here to cause trouble, and you did him a favor because the borg says he shouldn't be speaking to us ,right? Especialy about spritual things I for one question if he really is a practicing JW and if he is he isn't much of one I didn't act that way when I was. Oh yes one more thought . Would Jesus have treated people the way friday did? I can say heavens NO he had love and compassion for people he considered sinners, he spent most of his time with the sinners and he loved them why he even died for them!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Friday seems to me like he would rather kill them!!!!!! Well those are my thoughts but who am I, but another sinner? sigh
