It really has to do with money and the financial resources of the man.

If a man can support a wife and any resulting children adequately and can do so with multiplicity then actually few women would probably complain and from that acceptance would flow social acceptance and norms and eventually laws.

In history, society and those societies and cultures which have had polygamy has always tolerated such an arrangement so long as the wives and children were adequately provided for.

This is as true of biblical patriarchs to Millionaires with the mistresses to Hugh Hefner today. The women don't seem to be too unhappy with the arrangement so long as they are taken care of and feel secure. Security is #1 for a woman, not exclusivity.

Women in relationships are not threatened by other women coming into the relationship until it there is possibly a loss in the tangible material goods that might result from the new relationship.

Given the high cost of living these days, just the cost of healthcare and education for the children alone, only the wealthiest people could adequately support multiple wives and children, so it seems very unlikely that Society will be shifting in that direction and this probably explains why there was the shift towards monogamy and why having mistresses and second-families remains disfavoured.

PS: A wealthy woman could have a reverse situation and keep many men without too much negativity but the reasons for doing so seem entirely different and so that situation has been more infrequent historically.

Oh heck, been there done that, I know just what to do!

I went to a swing club one time, and I refused to go in the "back room" where all the stuff goes on. You werent allowed back there unless you unrobed and put on a towel! From what I heard they have matresses all over, and hot tubs, and anyone can just jump in when ever they feel! And of course they have a big sign to dispose of your personal property into the trash cans. NOT!

The way human beings are, one to one relationships work better it is not really possible to keep up with gratifying two women sexually and emotionally. One will have to lose out.
