But Russell was the faithful and discreet servant and fed that pyramid occultic nonsense to his fellow slaves as meat in due season. Could God ever choose someone like him as his representative on earth?

Fwiw, I believe that the "70 years" in the OT refers at least to two distinct, yet approximate and overlapping historical periods:
(1) the time of Neo-Babylonian domination over the region, starting long before the final fall of Jerusalem (587/6), most probably in 605 BC, date of Nebuchadnezzar's victory in Karkemish (May-June) and his accession on the Babylonian throne (September). It ends with the fall of Babylon before Cyrus in 539 BC. (Jeremiah 25:11f; 29:10 mostly refer to this period.)
(2) the time of Jerusalem's "desolation," which started in 587/6 and ended with the final reconstruction of the temple in 515 BC. (Zechariah 1:12; 7:15 refer to this period, not yet ended in 519-518 BC).
Of course those two periods were later confused, which is apparent in 2 Chronicles 36:21 -- perhaps also in Daniel 9:2 and the final redaction of Jeremiah.
Jmo, I'm not going into another endless discussion with scholar or anyone.

DID YOU GET YOUR INFORMATION FROM THE CHRSTDELPHIANS?

THE GOVERNING BODY DO BELIVE THAT CYRUS GIVE THE JEWS PERMISION TO GO AND REBUILD JERUSALEM IN 537BCE.
The building started around that time, but it took 20 years to finish it. In 537, all they had was an altar.
THEY DO NOT MAKE IT UP FROM THIN AIR AT ALL.THEY BELEIVE THE DESOLATION LASTED 70 YEARS NOT 50 YEARS.WITH YOU TRUSTING HISTRIONS.REMEMBER.DONT PUT YOUR HOPE IN THE SON OF EARTHLING MAN TO WHO NO SALVATION BELONGS
So the 70 years is the period without a temple, is that what you`re saying? The Temple wasn`t rebuild until around 517 BC. When the exiles returned, all they could do was scramble together some rocks to build an altar. So if the "premiss" for the starting point, is a time with no temple (and I believe this is the point of the WTS, that this is the vital point for the understanding on this issue, that the worship of the one true God was stopped), and the 70 years refer to a period with no Temple, then that gives us the period between 607BC and 517BC, when the Temple had been rebuilt. That`s 90 years, not 70, so this can`t be right. If the 70 years were to refer to the period of exile, then that couldn`t be right either. There were captives taken away from Judah and Jersualem both before and after the Temple was destroyed! Even in Nebuchadnezzars 23rd year, captives were taken away, as shown in Jeremiah. So obviously, neither the absence of a Temple nor absence of people is to be seen as the primary criteria for deciding when to start counting the 70 years. The point is: The 70 years do not refer to neither the period without a Temple, nor does it refer to a period with no people. Can`t you see that the WTS`s math puzzle doesn`t add up no matter what you do, PMJ? The 70 years refer to the time period that Babylon reigned over Judah, nothing else.

AFTER THE 70YEARS THEY THEN HAD JEHOVAHS BLESSING.THEY HAD SERVED THERE 70 YEARS.SO WHEN THE 70 YEARS ENDED THEY COULD RETURN TO TRUE WORSHIP WHY MAKE THINGS COMPLACATED WHEN THEY DONT HAVE TO BE.IF IT JUST APLIED TO BABYLON.WHY DOES DANIEL SAY THE 70 YEARS WERE THE DEVISTAIONS OF JERUSALEM.I DONT SEE MANY PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD BRING THAT SCRIPTURE UP TO OFTEN

PMJ: Did you read my previous post? As I showed, the WTS`s interpretation gets wrong either way! Whereas if you follow the secular historians, it all makes sense. The period doesn`t refer primarily to period with no Temple (see previous post), nor does it refer primarily to a period with every jew in the nation kicked out. And which passage in Daniel says:
THE 70 YEARS WERE THE DEVISTAIONS OF JERUSALEM
None, not in the sense you are saying it. On the other hand, I know this:
Jeremiah 25:11 "this whole land shall be a desolation
and a horror, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon 70 years ...That`s what I call precise! There are many theories on how to count the 70 years, when they began, etc, there are many starting points! But the one starting point that makes absolutely no sense at all, is the year 607 BC. It is a random year, picked by the WTS, to fit in with their 2520 years (which isn`t even years at all, just days, and it has nothing to do with the end of the world). They WTS started out with 1914 in mind, because they were eagerly awaiting Armageddon this year (based on a completely different math puzzle, by the way). When Armageddon didn`t come, they counted back 2520 years to arrive at what they believed HAD to be the fall of Jerusalem (in other words, they had a new interpretation in mind...) - but even then, they didn`t even realize that there is NO YEAR ZERO (0), so for years they actually believed that Jerusalem was destroyed in, not 607 BC, but 606 BC!! So, evidently, what the WTS in fact does, is try to make history fit with THEIR interpretations of the Bible, they are rewriting history to make it fit with THEIR doctrines! Now, tell me honestly: Doesn`t that just blow your mind? Can`t you see what utter BS the WTS are spewing out?
Read this, it`s a good piece on the 70 years:
