I know you don't like Cranberry Juice but have you ever tried it with Rum? This is my drink of choice. Any juice with rum is a favorite. I prefer Malibu Rum but C. Morgan Parrot Bay will suffice (if you don't mind really sweet rum).

I also love Whiskey Sours. Not too strong..just right.

A really good Vodka with anything is always a good choice.

Of course, I am no expert. I have a very low tolerance and I am absolutely 'lets-get-naked-BLITZED' after 5 small rum&cranberry's so I really shouldn't even talk.

In my experience the hangover seems to accompany sweet drinks. However the single best way I have found to avoid it is drinking as much H2O as possible before going to bed.

I like bourbon and water and martinis (breakfast of champions).. to get a buzz fast I like a shot of bourbon or ice cold stoli..

Rule #1 - NO sweet drinks. None.

Rule #2 - Get your hands on the best, highest quality scotch you can find. A good blended scotch is good. A good single-malt, expensive and matching your taste is best. Nothing cheap. Expensive stuff.

Single malts come in everything from light, light amber, all the way to deepest, darkest, brown. If you get a nice light single malt and mix it with water and ice only, you will rarely have a hangover of any kind. And you'll get one nice buzz. And the guys will consider you terribly sophisticated, which you will be.

All you gotta do is find that single malt you like the best. I like Glen Morange. But one thing is for sure; the older the scotch, the more it's been aged and filtered, the better, smoother, and cleaner it will be. And no hangovers. Of course, if you drink enough of anything, you'll have a hangover. Just take it easy; you'll be OK.

Too bad ol' Joe Rutherford is dead. I am sure he could recommend something. After all he did say....

    Tattoogrl,

I'm in the same boat as you, just getting over a hangover from drinking Long Island Ice Tea's (which are great, BTW.) I probably would have faired better if I had not indulged in the 3 Buttery Nipple shots, but hey, they were free.

On a more serious note, since cranberry juice is too sweet, try mixing Vodka (go for a top brand like Skyy, Absolut, etc.) and mix it with grapefruit juice.

Good advice about the water, too. I try to drink a full glass of water in between drinks, that seems to help.

May I suggest a MIND ERASER??
A tricky drink though-it is comprised of Kahlua, vodka and club soda. Properly prepared it is layered with Kahlua on the bottom, vodka in the middle, and club soda on top. Drink thru a thin cocktail straw very quickly and you get the taste sensations starting with Kahlua, ending with the bubbly sensation of the club soda which aids in that
quote:"pleasantly lit" feeling which you seek.

My first experience with a "Mind Eraser" was at my brothers wedding reception. I love those drinks... But what a pain in the ass to make.

    Single malt scotch...neat. Princess

and if its not a single malt such as a 25 yr old Springbank, I would suggest "Usquaebach" IMHO the best blended Scotch in the world.
