There's a train trestle over the french broad river in NC (Don't bother with the jokes we've made them all before!) just before you get to the hot springs... I can't think of the name of the town (white springs maybe?) It's where the appalachian trail crosses the river. Anyway there's a trestle there and it's right at the end of a nasty stretch of class 3 and 4 whitewater. Back in the 40's or 50's there was a SEVERE flood and a railroad locomotive got washed OFF the bridge (this must have been unreal to see! The bridge is a good 40 feet over the water!

Anyway the river bunches up and goes through some real nasty stuff then gets narrow and deeper right before the bridge. The undertow is so strong that if you fall out of the raft/kayak there even with a life vest your heading down! You go down about 30 feet bump along the bottom then the river drops off deeper again and the current pops you back up! The entire trip takes almost exactly 30 seconds it's like clockwork! So much like clockwork that the locals do it for fun... Anyway I've always wanted to go up there in late summer when the river is at it's lowest and dive that wreck! I figure if you start at the rapids way overweight and just drop down to the bottom the current would carry you to the drop off (where I understand the river goes to about 60 feet! Once past that drop off the main current is now going over your head so I think you could easily swim right to the train!

Anyone want to go with me? Anne Shirley has said "F*ck that" and I do believe that's her final word on it! If I go I'll try to take some pics! As far as I know NO ONE has EVER dove it!

Ps this is on topic cause you'd have to walk a few hundred yards on the train tracks!
