The True Believers (TM) will always see "simplification" as a good thing.

True enough. Whatever they do, it will trumpeted as a "simplification", and another sign that "Jehovah's chariot is on the move".

I guess it comes down to which circumstance is less demoralizing--baptism talks with no candidates, or scrapping the talks altogether. There is no $$$ effect to sway the decision one way or the other.

The theme was on keeping a single eye and all that

Me thinks you meant to say "keeping your eye simple"

Reflecting what Sandy said...my baptism in 1990 at the Woodland Hills, Calif. Assembly Hall only had four of us baptismal candidates and we were a circuit of about 1500 or more.

When you refered to 900 and said "district" did you mean Circuit and also that seems a bit small, even for a Circuit - so yeah that there were only 2 is unusual but not really outside the normal fluctuation.

Still as others have pointed out here and elsewhere, at a macro level, numbers are down.

    Oroborus,

In the various parts of the country I've had occasion to attend CAs and SADs attendance between 850 - 1,100 is fairly common.

You gotta remember, I come from an evangelical background where little preparation was required for baptism other than signs of genuine repentance. In the grand tradition of the first mass baptism we took the instruction literally, "Repent and be baptized and you WILL..." (Acts 2).

Our pastor's philosophy was, "Why wait? If they want to, do it." In our heyday, we were dunking six a week.

Ours wasn't "Read our literature for six months, respond appropriately, pass our examination of a hundred questions, and we will consider you for..." By the way, ours was a single church, three hundred strong.

Many circuits split into "A" and "B" sides, sometimes you'll even see a "C" side. If the assembly hall only holds 1000 people comfortably, and there are 2000 people in the circuit, they will split up the assemblies into different days.

Come to think of it, they did mention a letter tacked on to our description during the financial statement. We're probably Edmonton East and surrounding suburbs.
