A lot of circuits are struggling with what to do with all that wasted kitchen space. I had a good friend say "Wish they'd simplified the food arrangment before we built that there kitchen!"
Attended the Circuit Assembly - the work IS slowing down.

jgnat's comment about her church reminded me of a story from mine. In 1990 or so I participated in a Tuesday night evangelism group for awhile. We'd call on people that had been to church the previous Sunday and filled out a contact card, so it wasn't cold calling. After an hour or so of calling on people we'd meet back at the church to have coffee and cookies, and tell any good stories.
So one night we get back and the guy running the program announces that we're going to have a baptism. One team had called on a guy who wanted to know when he could get baptized. There response was "how about now?" So they brought him back and we dunked him. No six month study, no talk, no questions (Well two "Have you repented of your sins" and "Have you accepted Jesus as your savior?") There wasn't even a requirement that he wanted to be a member of our church.
What a contrast.

And at the District Conventions in those days OMG it was like watching the great crowd walk into the New World!!!!! Hundreds were baptized in one day at those District Conventions in the 70s and early 80s
My husband and I ( while 6 mo. pregnant ) were baptized in 1971. As you said, there were LONG LINES. Like what you would've found standing in the bathroom lines!!
Remember the days of having to use Port-O-Potties that were located in a dusty parking lot area? That was at a DA in Chgo at the old White Sox stadium in the ' 70s. Had to take the bus back and forth from Milwaukee. It was TORTURE.

Well, browsing around on the charitable accounts, I discovered a few things about our circuit's accounts and the assembly facility we use here in Edmonton. It is located well outside the city limits, near Onoway, and is charmingly referred to as "Devil's Lake". It is an impressive facility on well-groomed grounds, with a natural wood roof. It is a renovated dance hall.
Before 2002, each "Circuit" recorded it's expenses for renting the assembly hall as "Expenses on Charitable Work", line 120. Since then, it appears that administration, revenue and expenses have been administered by the "Edmonton Assembly Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses", Onoway.
Here's some 2004 highlights for Onoway:
- Assets (facility) $1,397,007
- Received, operating expenses, $126,244
- Occupancy Costs $100,811 (I'm wondering how this compares to other facilities of this size)
Costs of "renting" the facility by our circuit continues to rise. From the total received, I'd say we are one of about ten circuits who take advantage of this facility.
- 2004 $15,970
- 2003 $14,964
- 2002 $15,213
- 2001 $12,560
- 2000 $7,442
Donations to "mother" are relatively constant.

That's good to hear jgnat, and I wouldn't be surprised if the two who were baptised were blackmailed into it by their parents. They wouldn't be the first if they were.
Dr Jekyll, don't give them ideas.

It's amazing how pushing a date like 1975 had on the number of baptisms...did the same from 1920 to 1925. What were the baptisms like after 1975? Say from 1976 to 1979?

Woodland Hills, Calif. Assembly Hall
That place looked like a flying saucer or something similar. I think it's a car storage place for a local dealership now.

yeah Bstndance. that was one of the coolest assembly halls ever. it had a total circular stage but they always had some sections blocked off so you could never sit behind the speaker. the funkiest thing about the place was that everything inside looked farther than it actually was so you would like start to walk around to a friend and if you weren't paying attention you would end up walking all the way around before you knew it. there were also some very cool murals in the lobby, i think of Revelation and such. the baptismal pool was small but nice. it was a really nice setting for an assembly hall....
