    Is J. K. Rowling a Witch?

The reason I ask is this, a 'nice' couple across the road are Born Again christian Fundamentalists. Their little boy was playing with a sword and his mum told me he had been watching 'Narnia' (based on the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe). I asked therefore, why they do not allow their daughter (aged 7) to watch Harry Potter. Apparantly, though there is a Witch in Narnia, that's OK as the 'goodies' do not try to consort with spirits and use magic. In Harry Potter, Harry used magic and therefore, poor old Harry goes against the Bible!!!!

I was told, that children in Brazil, who had been 'foolish enough' to read the Harry Potter books had become sick. I explained that I thought this might be from religious indoctrination and fear, induced by religious fanaticism. I was swiftly told not to doubt a 'christian's experience' and that the demonz were attacking these children.

I said I was offended. We have every HP book going in our house, plus films, cds, Royal Doulton figures etc. How come our house was not a cess pit of demon activity. I attracted a blank look of despair, and I sense that her daughter will not be coming round to play with my daughter again.

However, she finished with the claim that J. K Rowling actually claims to be a Witch. She says she has it in writing from a magazine interview and therefore 'we should not consort with spirit mediums'.

I don't know about this, but has J K Rowling ever claimed to be a witch? I had no answer on this one, so could someone enlighten me please?

The one conclusion I came to is that all Fundamentalist Christians are as daft as the JWs and even worse!!

Hang on, I know the answer to this, errr - NO, she's a writer!!! Quote from JK Rowling in ''Entertainment Weekly'' - ''Practicing wiccans think I'm also a witch. I'm not.''

Your neighbour knows children in Brazil?

    Hi Gill

This statement appears on Reachout Trust's website - they are pretty fundamental so you might like to point your neighbour to the article. They still do not approve of the books themselves either so there's no hidden agendas here:

    http://www.reachouttrust.org/articles/occult/hpotter.htm

    STATEMENTS NOT TRUE

    1. J.K.Rowling is a witch and has written these books to deliberately draw people into witchcraft.

In all the years we have been looking at these issues we have never found any evidence to back up the above claim. It is a wild slanderous assertion that we do not want to be associated with. There is no question that Rowling, or her team have researched well into witchcraft, and understand it, but nowhere do we find any deliberate seeking to bring children into witchcraft. Rowling has found a story line and subject that many are interested in and has produced some well written books about it.

    2. Most who read these books become demonised and end up in witchcraft.

Again there is no evidence whatsoever for this. I do believe it has increased the interest in magic and spells etc. It has also probably led some to look further into the subject, wanting the power that Harry has. However there is not a demon on every page and many read the books as simply another novel with an interesting plot.

The one thing I would like to add here though, is that what it might do, is stop people looking at evangelical Christianity. Not because the books teach anti-Christian themes but simply the subject matter is occult, magic and witchcraft and that is what people would be thinking about not Christianity.

    3. There is no danger whatsoever with these books and all Christian parents should let their children read them without any interference.

This is a statement made by a number of well-known evangelical Christian leaders and expanded on in a number of books that want to show Biblical themes in Harry Potter. My problem here is that this is going to the 'other extreme.' The subject matter of Harry Potter is Witchcraft, nobody denies that. Most that read the Bible with an evangelical persuasion would see that clearly God says that Witchcraft is not of Him and that many were turned away from Him by following Witchcraft. Herein is the heart of it - if I accept these books, without any qualifications, and indeed encourage children to read them, then I am encouraging my children to read something that God says is not good or helpful in coming to know Him.

Am I saying we should not read the books? I think that is for each family to decide before God - here I simply want to show why I believe this third statement is extreme and we do not agree with it.

Yes, J K Rowling is a witch. Enid Blyton was a small child who went on adventures, foiling foreign spies with the contents of her picnic basket. And I have it on good authority that C S Lewis was a talking lion.

MC - This lady is from Brazil though her husband is British, and he's a full time minister in their church or 'fellowship' as they call it. She also told me about all the demonized happenings that go ion in Brazil, and all 'without' the help of J K Rowlilng, never mind with.

Sad emo - Great site, and really interesting.

The more I look into these things the more I believe that anyone following religions/Bibles/Holy books are very sadly deluded. Shame really, especially as they believe they are so good and even 'saved'. Sad.

Fe203girl - I always knew Enid Blyton was a miniature spy! As for C. S. Lewis .....where to start!

    Ugghhhhh

I personally enjoyed every book and Movie and can't wait for the final book, I don't know why when it comes to fantasy in books that people are always having to say it is satanic, I remember back in the 70's when star wars came out the same thing was going on. Why does this world especially the religious world give satan so much credit.

I was told, that children in Brazil, who had been 'foolish enough' to read the Harry Potter books had become sick

Maybe I should look at this further. Okay for seeing the Star war movies, and for reading and seeing Harry Potter , that is the reason my 18 year old daughter is needing a double lung transplant, That is why I am divorced, That is why I struggle financially, That is why I have fallen in love with a man who is a JW and the religion i was raised to fear. All makes perfect sense now. NOT

I am Christian - not child. I guess God keeps me from Harry Potter by boring me. I tried about 3-4 times to watch the movies... I never get passed first 30 minutes... it is boring... not interesting and stupid movie. Ofcourse teletoobies are more stupid, but not far from H.P.

New Worldly Translation - Tell me this is a plant!! That is so funny. No wonder the psychiatric services are making a packet in the US. Fundamentalists are TOTALLY insane. It's certainly the funniest thing I've read for a long time.

Makes me glad that I live in the 'land of the Free'. Burning Harry Potter Books!!! They're totally nuts!
