Will you have access to a computer on this trip so we can track where you're at and perhaps meet up with you as your travel schedule evolves?

Yes. But it's proving such a nightmare to get an American power supply for my brand new camera, I'm going to try and pick one up in New York. And as it's my first time travelling alone, I'll need to be inventive to get in on the pictures using a self timer and not just produce hundreds of pictures of scenery. So I will post a batch every few days on a blog site. I am thinking of using the pictures site provided by Yahoo, unless anyone has any better ideas.

Yep Ballistic. New York driving - KEEP ONE HAND ON THE HORN AND YOUR PEDAL TO THE METAL. PEOPLE DRIVE FAST AND RIGHT ON YOUR BUMPER.

In the city I advise taking a taxi. You have to be very aggressive to get one. It's very interesting there, but crazy. Watch your wallet and don't let any bums wash your windows. Back in the ' 70s I was standing on the sidewalk in the city and watched as a guy grabbed a woman's purse and she hauled off and beat him off. He didn't get anything, but a sore head. Former Mayor Guilianni did a great job in decreasing the crime there.

You going to visit Patterson estate? Beautiful countryside up there. Be sure and have some Italian pizza - the food is great there! I mean in NY city - not Patterson cafeteria.

My hubby is from New York. His mom's side was from Brooklyn. Good Irish Catholics. When we became JWs she didn't talk to us for 2 years. We wish now that we would have listened to her rantings about the JWs.

    A picture log? Cool!

I'm in Ventura County (between LosAngeles and SantaBarbara) about 10 miles inland from the coast. If you're spending a few days in the area, or just driving thru, there might be a few us that could meet up with you. (Some might even have a room or a couch to let you use.)

Do you kayak? There are some great trips out to the channel islands (off the california coast from Oxnard / Ventura / SantaBarbara).

A motorcycle trip up the california coast is pretty spectacular. There are lots of canyon roads and open coastal routes to enjoy. (I did a little trip last weekend. Beautiful!)

Doesn't the camera use batteries? We have all types of batteries, you know.

juni, like I was saying earlier the insurance companies wont insure us Brits to drive in NYC. But the hotel I'm staying at would charge extra to park a car anyway, so what's the point? I'll use the subway like I do in London, or get taxis. I will definately eat Italian, as it's my favorite food. You said it's crazy there, but I don't really care. One thing though - what is everyone wearing these days in New York... I seem to look like a tourist wherever I go.

Aude, I can't promise anything but you are on route if you PM me your email address (can't rely on JWD being up to meet people) could drop by for a coffee. As for my camera, of course it has a battery but it needs to be charged regularly. Modern digital cameras need a lot of power to light the lcd screen and run the microprocessors inside.

Another suggestion for ya. Though it is unlikely to help with the picture issue, most public libraries have free or reasonable Internet access. When I visited the Florida Keys I popped in most days

    Ballistic -

It's a fact that even if you dressed like a New Yorker, they'd pick you out as a tourist. They know their own. It's wierd. If you're going to be here in summer, dress for hot days. Obvious I guess.

PM New York posters for more accurate info. I'm in Wisconsin which is about 1000 miles from NY. We have about the same temps for summer and humidity.

You'll have a great time. A lot to see. I love it as everyone is giving you sights to see in their home states. We have beautiful countryside, cows, cows, cows, cheese, a lot of good restaurants, cows, bratwurst, beer and wine and hard liquor, cows and more cows.

I think that jeans will fit in well almost anywhere you go in the US. Years ago, my british friends would buy a few pairs here because they were much cheaper than in the UK. Jeans and t-shirts or polo shirts or button shirts with a pair of dress slacks should suffice.

Some places, especially in NYC, still have dress codes. In California, were're very casual so jeans and tennis shoes (sneakers or runners) or boots (or sandals) are worn virtually everywhere.

    You have a pm.

Basically think of Scotland and "go large" (very large), as they say in the McDonalds adverts

Yeah, I went today to buy my luggage, and my mate said don't bother, just buy everything you need in walmart when you get there. hmm , not sure about this idea.

Juni, good point... I will look like a tourist and definately sound like one. hehe
