Technology precipitates change and the JW organization seems to heartily opposes change in any form. From the Rutherford Presidency on, they have pretty much railed against every new technology. You can name the field, from hemodilution to CB radios, the JW organization was either actively against, or had nothing good to say about any of these things.
Television? From about the 50's on, it was not only an irresponsible parent's baby sitter, (Mothers were supposed to be able to supervise a 7, a 5, and 3 year old while they washed the dishes and managed to look like June Cleavor all at the same time, don't you know?) it was a window directly into Satan's world. You wouldn't invite these worldly people into your home, so why watch them on T.V?, the magazines would ask. Maxwell Friend used to pat children on the head and tell them not to watch T.V. 'lest they become "Televidiots."
Pocket calculators were demonized in the early 70's. "You don't need them. You've got a much better calculator in your head" the magazines would say. They continued to spout this line even after the point where you couldn't get through even a high school level Trig or Calculus I class without one. I guess Witness kids weren't supposed to be taking those classes anyway. How much math does it take to wash a window?
Personal computers in the late 70's? --A total waste of time and money. A fad that never will amount to anything. They're not even used in Brooklyn, so why would you need one? (Of course it was shortly after this that MEPS came along and the organization thawed on that front.)
Video Games? They were bad in the days of Pong and they're still bad, bad, bad despite recent evidence that they actually stimulate rather than depress cognitive ability.
And the Internet? Few technologies have had this great a negative impact on the JW organization and it's no surprise that they've resisted it. Not that porn is good and not that it shouldn't piss you off that children can innocently stumble accross it. But if the JW organization is focusing their criticism of the internet on porn and porn alone, I suppose it could also be a sign that they realize they will have to accept it's other aspects.
