    Leolaia:

I am sorry for the "cut and paste comment". Re-reading some of your posts I can see the original thinking involved. I am happy to see that you "dislike popularity threads". "Thank Yous" can be given privately through the boards message center or in connection with an on-going thread. And it means a lot more when it is in context of a discussion because it lets the writer know that they are getting through to the reader.

One of the things I resent about the God of the Bible is that he requries "praise" and worship. I figure if there really were a God he wouldn't be so pathetic as to give a damn about his creation singing songs to him.

I want to add that there are others who share my feelings about these threads. But they realize they risk disapproval if they voice their oppinions.

If someone starts a thread praising me, I promise I'll be contrite and self-effacing. Anyone?

I personally don't think of myself in the terms expressed in the thread title, and I should note that my Ph.D. is not in biblical studies per se but in historical linguistics (which does bisect biblical studies in some ways).

Thanks for the clarification Leo. The scholarships I turned down oh so many years ago were for study in linguistics, an area which my teachers in highschool felt I had a real talent and an area I still find interesting. The area in which I did major was determined more by what was available in the area I live though I also find it quite fascinating as well. One of the real regrets in my life is that I didn't take the scholarships and go!

I think that proplog2's problem is that he has an extreme inferiority complex. This results in extreme envy that blossoms when others get praise and he does not.

Proplog2 also confuses the giving of praise by people who volunteer it, with a need to have it by those who receive it. The two things are unrelated.

I recently completed an intensive technical class in certain fundamentals of electrical engineering. It was given by a prominent emeritus professor from Cal Tech, who has been traveling around the world giving these classes. The man is absolutely brilliant and has revolutionized certain aspects of the EE profession. He's an IEEE Fellow for Life and has a list of credentials and honors a mile long. But the man is friendly and down to earth. At age 77, he doesn't need praise from anyone -- he knows he's earned it. I was quite pleased to tell him to his face that I wished I had known the information he taught when I was beginning my career more than 20 years ago. Other students also praised his course. No one had any problem with giving such deserved praise. Why? Because no one had an inferiority complex. He accepted the praise gracefully, and that only increased my respect for the man. Why? Because I don't have an inferiority complex.

I always wondered about that. I just assumed Leo's path was in religious studies. Nice to know.

I don't see anything wrong with expressing appreciation or giving recognition. I just don't want to see a cult of mindless followers who regard the scholar or expert as some kind of guru whose word is the final authority and can do no wrong.

Aside from the intellect, training, education, and access to resources, scholars are human like anybody else. They have their own biases and filters. Also, there are some gaps in knowledge that no amount of scholarship can fill. Notice there are scholars on different sides of the same issues, even though they have access to the same information?

As long as we are able to discern between fact and opinion (often presented as taken-for-granted fact), we can benefit from good scholarship regardless of whether or not we agree with the scholar's point of view.
