Hi Danny: Yes, in this instance, someone like Barbara Lee gets bashed for her position. The reason is that we are in an extreme situation where even the far left liberals like Hillary Clinton voted for Bush's request for military action, etc. Democrats in the Senate even doubled Bush'd financial request. So, this is not an example that is useful in my opinion. And media people died in this event, so naturally, liberals and conservative fell bonded right now.
The first TV network that moved to the right was Fox News. And I do admit that media has started to shift from the dominance of the left. But let me give a good example from more normal times.
The TV reporter, Ms. Shriver (Can't recall her first name) was reporting on the 1996 campaign between Clinton and Dole. When she spoke of Clinton, she was all smiley and happy, and chipper to talk about Clinton. Then she commented about the Dole campaign, and immediately her face went glum, her countenance dropped, and she sounded like she had just gone to a funeral.
Body language transmits 70% to 80% of our message. (That is one reason why people fight on Internat forums, who otherwise would never fight. The Internet talk forums are devoid of body langauge, and as a result the subconscious mind inserts it, and screws up the intent of what the author was really saying.)
Media people by a super-majority favor Democratic politicians. This is a fallout from the 1960s and 1970s. The trend is gradually slowing, but not much since students are still being taught by teachers who also lean liberal. And, no matter how hard they try to be fair and balanced, they cannot hide their body language and tone of voice. This is very powerful to viewers. The reason I see it is that I am conservative, and notice the bias.
Another quick example is when Rosey O'Donnel ambushed Tom Selik on the gun issue during her interview with him. He did not take it, and came back at her politely. She was rude and biased, and because ti was her show, she had the media advantage. She wants to abolish the Second Ammendment and only have guns for police and movie stars. The rest of us should not be allowed to defend ourselves, because we might forget and go rob a bank in her opinion.
Now, when a TV personality, who leans conservative, does the same thing, I don't see it as easily because they are then preaching to the choir, and I am able to better hear their words, because their body language agrees with my own disposition. I get sucked in just as easily. And I am sure at that point a liberal will see the body language of the conservative TV person, and see it as bias in the other direction.
Communication is a tenuous miracle at best. It is a wonder how we are able to work together as a society to get anything done. Fear is our greatest emotion by far and above all others. And politics is one of those areas where this fear is greatly exaggeratted. Liberal fear that conservative big business will take all the money and leave old people and children uncared for, and conservative fear that big liberals will destroy all opportunity and freedom by socialiizing the economy. Liberals trust government, and Conservative fear government. Liberals fear business, and conservatives trust business.
However right or wrong either side is, the truth is likely somewhere in the middle, and the evidence of our national prosperity is that neither Liberal or Conservative really acts to our harm. Both end up being balanced, and both seem to be kept in check by competing pressures. And maybe that was the real wisdom of the founding fathers, to create a system where no single competing interest can totally gain control. And they are forced to compromise to get anything done. Maybe that is the beauty of the system. - Amazing
